A Cybertruck owner from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Sean, says Tesla is refusing to accept his recalled Cybertruck with a defective rear motor inverter as a trade-in vehicle.
Sean adds that he doesn’t want to wait the approximately two months it would take Tesla to perform the repair, so he’s willing to trade in the vehicle, pay Tesla more money, and upgrade to a tri-motor Cybertruck Cyberbeast.
However, it appears that the EV maker doesn’t want to take Sean’s Cybertruck back under any circumstances.
Sean, who goes by the username “TrueRoadWarrior” shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum. Here is what he wrote…
“In a recent post, I shared that I expected a long wait time for the recall repair of the inverter on my All-Wheel-Drive Cybertruck. It looks as though 2 months is the lead time, and I just came from the service center. That all depends on when they actually receive the repair parts.
I decided I would look into trading my AWD Foundation Series Cybertruck in for a Cyberbeast if I could take delivery sooner as I can’t risk driving my truck (my only vehicle) long distances if there’s a possibility of the inverter breaking.”
Before proceeding, it is important to note that Sean is only looking to get a new Cybertruck because the current one has a major flaw that Tesla will not fix for months.
Most people would be frustrated with a car company that puts them in such a predicament; however, Sean is still willing to give Tesla another chance and even pay more money for the tri-motor Cybertruck Cyberbeast.
Keeping this in mind, let’s see how Tesla responded to his request. Sean continues to write…
“I went to Tesla’s trade-in estimator, entered my VIN, and then received a text from a Tesla Representative who shared that “…At this time, we're not accepting any Cybertruck trade-ins.” Not for upgrades or anything else.”
What’s interesting here is that if Sean wanted to trade in any vehicle other than a Cybertruck, even an internal combustion vehicle from a completely different car company, Tesla would be willing to give him a trade-in estimate.
However, if a Cybertruck owner is looking to trade in his/her truck, it appears that Tesla wants nothing to do with them.
Finally, Sean concludes his post writing…
“I’m not sure what I would get for the Foundation Series AWD, but based on Tesla’s response, I think I might be lucky to get 75% of what I paid for it. This is deeply concerning.”
Sean believes it’s alarming that Tesla is unwilling to stand behind its products. However, other forum members, who also happen to be Cybertruck owners, say Tesla is in the right here.
For example, Carsly, a Cybertruck owner from Princeton, New Jersey, writes…
“Your purchase agreement likely precludes you from selling for one year. So, how do you expect to trade it in?
Maybe if you were one of the first Cybertruck owners to take delivery last year, you'll be able to trade it in a few weeks once your one-year prohibition on transfers has elapsed. Otherwise, a year is a year.”
This is a surprising stance to see a Cybertruck owner take. First, Tesla instituted the purchase agreement to prevent individuals from buying and flipping the truck for a profit on the secondary market.
This made sense in the early days of the Cybertruck when the truck was selling for as much as $200,000.
However, Sean’s case is that he’s forced to get a new vehicle because Tesla will not fix his recalled Cybertruck for 2 months. Despite this fact, he’s willing to give Tesla more money to upgrade to an even more expensive Cybertruck version.

The irony of the person who said "Tesla has a no resale clause within 1 year of purchase" is that the clause actually reads that Tesla themselves reserves the right to buy it back and receive any profits on secondary sale. They expected a shortage of Cybertruck and that resale value would stay high. Instead, they have hundreds of Foundation Series they were unable to sell. They don't want low mileage used inventory to get in the way of selling new models. Tesla should have called it quits when the exoskeleton idea failed and done something useful, like Ford making an electric ladder frame for the Lightning. Tesla could have used a similar shape (but with actual curves and no huge blind spots) to get better aero and saved weight, too.

OP is poor and unprofessional. Tesla is going to repair the vehicle, what is childish to assume is that they will do it as soon you want. 2 months wait? Obviously there is a line. This is one thing to have in mind when purchasing such things. Simple as that.

Companies that build on name recognition with new products depend on the consumer to take on debt obligation of the institutions product manufactured and sale expense.
These institutions transfer real time operational expense on the end user customer, just as the airlines do with time, forcing people to arrive at the airport hours ahead of the flights, backing up hundreds of passengers waiting to process themselves through two employees at a ticket counter.
Examples like Chase Bank and Tesla abound. Chase as a financial institution bank is notorious for withholding customer funds and refusing to release individuals capital nor pay owed interest. Proof of that is all over the current Internet where Chase refused to return $2,000 dollars to a little girl from her account deposited from her enterprise of selling chickens. All of the capital to the little girl, literally "chicken-feed" to Chase. Think of the Chase motivation and leverage: Whether the $350,000 we were fighting to retrieve for a client, or the little girl's $2,000, apply either of those numbers to four thousand seven hundred (4,700) bank branches in their system of any day's withheld average total deposits and bank wires, and you get billions of dollars of withheld stolen and un-returned capital and interest of customer's money. The US Government and US Treasury will never take your side for that: Who are the only customer the Government sells it's currency to? Answer,: "Da Banks."
The same goes for Tesla. The public consumers pick up the responsibility and debt of the product development, operational and stock market expense and profit of the car companies.
So get a grip, either borrow the monthly payment money from the banks and car companies and retain that balance leverage, or save money initially but risk the entire capital amount through the control of the banks and/or product owner sellers which saddle you with the debt. It is what it is, is all.

Whatever happened to the motto of American businesses “The Customer is ALWAYS Right”? With Trump and Elon in bed together and Trump concerns with the American car makers this is not a good model for a business. After all Tesla is making more money than the owner of this Cybertruck I’m sure. This is a tax write off for Tesla. What is morally right is for Tesla to do what is right by the customer with little as possible inconvenience. This certainly is nothing the customer has done to provoke this problem. I mean what is Tesla afraid of exchanging plus more money for an upgrade due to their defective parts? And satisfying a customer who has done nothing to warrant this issue. This is the New “American Way” I suppose or what we’ve been asked to except these days. I mean really what does this enormous car/truck manufacturer have to loose by making this customer satisfied and willing to buy another American car? I would file a class action lawsuit and check to see if there are other complaints and recalls. When I saw these vehicles on the road for the first time not knowing it was a truck and how much they are worth I was thinking what a ugly looking vehicle I wouldn’t even drive this for $10k thinking they cost about $40k. EV’s are getting stuck for drivers that drive long distances bc there aren’t enough charging stations. I say stay away from EV’s and plug in hybrids.

There is a big difference between cannot fix and will not fix for 2 months. That is a serious issue, if Tesla will not fix the vehicle for 60 days. As far as the statement by Carsly, if Sean could trade his truck in a few weeks then a rep from Tesla would have told him so. At the very minimum Tesla should provide a loaner CyberTruck until they can address Sean's issue. Most luxury dealerships would take care of their customers.
