A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says, It Rained For The First Time in His Area (San Diego) & His Cybertruck Started to Freak Out – He Adds, “Tesla Needs To Dial In The Software To Adapt to Inclement Weather”

Max Delbecq, a Cybertruck owner from sunny San Diego, reports that his neighborhood recently experienced rare rainfall.

The weather wasn’t too bad; however, driving his Cybertruck in wet conditions for the first time, he was surprised by all the issues that cropped up.

The frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners group on Facebook.

He writes…

“Rain in San Diego over the weekend caused Sentry Mode to go nuts. Unnecessary use of resources. Also, lots of FSD faults due to camera obstructions caused by rain. I think TSLA is going to have to dial in the software to adapt to inclement weather.

I'm in San Diego, and our weather is pretty non-existent, so I can imagine it's much worse for those of you who drive in actual hazardous conditions.”

Below his post, Max included a picture of his Cybertruck’s center touch screen showing the 26 Sentry events the vehicle recorded because of the rain.

Max doesn’t seem at all happy with how his Cybertruck, especially the truck’s software features, handled the rain.

He wonders why Tesla doesn’t simply add LiDAR, given that the cameras in Tesla vehicles struggle in rainy conditions.

Max continues to ask…

“Why did Tesla decide not to use any LiDAR?”

This is a valid question; however, it's important to note that using LiDAR won't resolve camera problems during rain. In fact, the laser light emitted by LiDAR is even more likely to be obstructed by water droplets.

Elon Musk actually uses this exact reason to explain why Tesla has chosen a vision-only system rather than incorporating LiDAR.

However, front-facing radar could be helpful in this scenario, but it also introduces other issues, including mismatches between camera and radar readings.

Going back, although Max says he’s unhappy with his Cybertruck in the rain, he also mentions that despite his dissatisfaction with the advanced software features, he was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly the Cybertruck managed the slippery road.

Max writes…

“I still love how capable the truck is, though. No issues with traction when zipping around the fools in the rain. Such an amazing piece of technology!”

Overall, Max has some positive and negative things to say about his truck. And looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners also shared equally varied opinions.

Some criticized Max, calling him a troll and claiming he doesn’t actually own a Cybertruck, while others said they’ve experienced the same rainy-weather issues.

A fellow Cybertruck owner writes…

“I’ve experienced this issue too with the latest update. The rain sets off several unnecessary Sentry events.”

On the other hand, some Cybertruck owners pushed back, saying they haven’t experienced any issues driving their trucks in rainy environments.

A fellow Cybertruck owner writes…

“It doesn’t sound like you have a Cybertruck. I live in the mountains and have experienced really bad weather. The vehicle performs well, and the front camera is mounted inside the windshield. Your car may need service, or you might be missing something.”

A second Cybertruck owner, Trevor Scott, writes…

“Just turn on low power mode if you need the car to preserve power. And you want Tesla to add LiDAR? Stop, you’re making me laugh.”

Overall, Cybertruck owners seem divided about the truck’s performance in rainy conditions. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.

I love driving my 2009 Hummer H2 that I put a new l9h motor with a supercharger and a stage 3 tranny in

This is not newsworthy. It's an owner issue, not the hardware. I suspect anyone familiar with the menu tree can correct this in a couple of minutes.

Vehicle dynamics and performance are separate neural networks, as is the user model. The first two are canned. The third one is an ongoing training session between driver and neural network model.

Rudimentary algorithms are already loaded, but you personally need to have some input. Until it's slightly better, anyway.

Sounds like a lot of fabricated BS to me to scare people from buying a Tesla or any electric vehicle. This type of article is why the US is getting further and further behind in the automotive sector.

"however, it's important to note that using LiDAR won't resolve camera problems during rain. In fact, the laser light emitted by LiDAR is even more likely to be obstructed by water droplets."

Ah, of course, this is exactly why so many other vehicle manufacturers use it.

That's not a answer that's worthy of acceptance when so many others have figured it out. It sounds lazy, but, then again, so is Elon.

Myself and 5 other cybertruck owners I personally know agree cybertruck is supreme in the rain and snow. That wiper is brilliant! Whenever Im in any other car including my Model Y, little standard wipers are infuriating to me now.

"Zipping around fools in the rain" sounds like the kind of high quality driving I've come to expect from Cyber Truck owners
