Another Recall Issued On 2020 Ford F-150 and 2020 Ford Ranger Regarding Transmissions

Ford issues a safety recall on select models of F-150, Ranger and Expedition regarding 10-speed automatic transmission. Many issues over the years have surrounded this transmission including numerous recalls and class action lawsuits.

Today, Ford issued a safety recall on select 2020 vehicles. The recall involves Ford’s controversial 10-speed automatic transmission which has had many complaints and is also involved in a class-action lawsuit that was filed this year and remains unresolved.

According to Ford, this recall includes 2020 Ford Ranger and 2020 F-150 vehicles with 10-speed automatic transmission and 2020 Expedition vehicles with the police package and 10-speed automatic transmission. Units equipped with a rotary gearshift dial are not affected.

In affected vehicles, a clip that locks the gearshift cable to the transmission may not be fully seated. Over time, a partially seated clip may allow the transmission to be in a gear state different from the gearshift position selected by the driver. This could allow the driver to move the shifter to Park and remove the ignition key, without the transmission gear actually being in Park. If the parking brake is not applied in those cases, the vehicle could move unintentionally, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

This action affects 55,158 vehicles in the United States and federal territories, 12,090 in Canada and 681 in Mexico.

Affected vehicles include:

• 2020 Ford Ranger vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant from Feb. 28 to March 18, 2020
• 2020 Ford F-150 vehicles built at Dearborn Truck Plant from Feb. 18 to March 19, 2020, and Kansas City Assembly Plant from Feb. 21 to March 19, 2020
• 2020 Ford Expedition vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant from March 3 to 19, 2020.
Dealers will inspect the shift cable locking clip and properly seat it as needed. The Ford reference number for this recall is 20S18.

2020 Ford F-150 policeOther Issues Regarding 10R80 10-speed automatic
On January 19, 2020 a class-action lawsuit was filed (Orndorff, et al., v. Ford Motor Company) alleging that “Ford knew or should have known about the alleged transmission problems that cause hard shifting, jerking, lunging and hesitation between gears.”

This is all part of many complaints on forums amongst F-150 owners regarding the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission found in many 13th Generation F-150 vehicles that result in hard shifting and inconsistent performance from this transmission. The latest recall is just more evidence involving the ongoing issue over these transmissions.

Ford has issued a couple different Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) regarding issues with this transmission including TSB 18-2079 and TSB 18-2274.

Other issues have involved the pin that attaches the transmission shift linkage to the transmission may come out, preventing the transmission from responding to movement of the shift lever.

Other Ford F-150 Recalls
I wrote a lot earlier this year about the other class-action lawsuit against Ford, regarding the frozen door lock issue going on with the current generation F-150. Ford has issued safety recalls and “fixes” for this issue, but many owners are left unsatisfied with the repairs and still are having issues.

I wrote last month how some F-150 owners had mounting frustrations over what seemed like a string of recalls and TSBs issued. However, in that story, I determined there really weren’t that many recalls going on at all.

Some of these “issues” involved very minor nuisances like daytime running lights staying on and the brightness involved in those. Plus there was a minor issue with a battery cable as well as an issue with a spare tire.

However, between the frozen door lock (which can cause the door to swing open while the truck is moving) and this harsh-shifting transmission, these are more than nuisances. Consumer confidence is vital for any brand. And as the best-selling vehicle in the country, Ford needs to stay on top of all these issues and work to resolve them.

Ford 10-speed transmission RPM

In their defense, they have been transparent and aggressive in issuing recalls and TSBs. They’re not running from this problem and working to resolve this. And hopefully, as the next-generation F-150 comes in for 2021, the transmission issues will be resolved.

We already know the engines that will be used for the 2021 Ford F-150 and it’s likely the 10-speed transmission will be included.

Be sure to check out the latest story on the surprising uptick in sales for the Ranger thus far in 2020.

Update on previous: I found another dealer to look at it and they kept it another month, waiting on a lift to come available. After the 3rd week I called to see if they had any idea of when they would be able to get to it, I was told "I can't really tell you, maybe 2 more weeks. I had been bumming rides from co workers and borrowing the wifes car during all of this...I stopped by a competitors dealership/different brand and the salesman told me he would work a trade/sight unseen as long as the truck was under warranty.
I was without my F150 for over 3 months before trading it and it was still wasn't repaired.
No More Fords for Me .

Picked up a brand new 2021 F150 Friday night. Sunday at noon, powertrain malfunction and truck won’t run. Tow truck driver has a hard time loading it on the flatbed.
Prior truck was a 2021 F250 and had issues with it slamming into gear and lagging at times.
Not a great feeling or safe feeling. Very disappointed

Put a manual transmission in these trucks and I'll buy one. 250,000 miles on both my Tacoma's with no major repairs. Manual transmissions are the key. It's why I have not bought a Ford since my 2001 f450. Probably never will again. The auto tranny's are horrible.

I have a 2020 F-150 and I am having the same issues. Shifting hard and it has started making a funny whining noise. The dealership changed my torque convertor and it's still doing the same thing. I am at a loss for words. When you pay $50,000 for a vehicle you expect it to work properly. Can anybody inform me on what to do next?

I traded mine after almost 3 months in 2 different shops while it was still in the shop.
Trade it, cut your losses and avoid the brand... Ford is trying too hard to maximize MPGs while sacrificing dependability and useability.

Hi Larry.
I have 2020 F150 2.7 XLT with the exact same problems. Hard shifting and a whining noise and I am going again back to the dealer to try to fix it. Jus FYI there are two TSB's for those problems from FORD.

TSB 20-2083 from August 25 2020 - 10R80 transmission - high - pitched whine - built on 21 OCT - 2019 and through 16 - Dec - 2019 / Inner and outer shaft bearings to be replaced./

TSB 21-2315 from September 27, 2021 - 10R80 harsh engagement / harsh shift/ delayed shift with or without DTCs.
The control module / valve body/ needs to be repaired or overhauled.

Good luck and i hope it's going to help.

"they have been transparent and aggressive in issuing recalls and TSBs." == BS!!!

I have a 2019 Ranger with all these same Transmission issues and Ford did all they could to ignore me. 3 dealerships, 2 customer service reps and basically they just said, Sucks to be you in buying a Ford. All I wanted to hear is, Yes there is an issue and we're working on it; but no!! Yes, the Ranger has the exact same transmission as the F150 so this software update should be valid for the Ranger too, Right? The Transmission issues started about one month in to owning it. Had I known this before, I'd never have bought it. I've even provided feedback through their emails to me, but nothing. No response. It's so bad, I cant' wait to get rid of it, just nothing else to get right now. As a lifelong Ford owner (still daily drive my 1986 Mustang GT I bought brand new and looks pretty good too), this is heartbreaking but how can I ever buy another Ford if this is how they treat customers?

I have a 2020 Ford Raptor with 30,000 KM's on it. Myself, wife, and 2 kids were merging onto the highway. When I accelerated to merge, we heard a massive bang and then lost all acceleration. Luckily, we were able to coast onto the side of highway safely. I tried to accelerate once on the shoulder and got a whole lot grinding noises and no movement. The truck is at the dealership now and they have to pull the transmission which will take some time as they are short staffed. While I'm mad, I'm upset and saddened by this happening on a $100K+ truck with only 30K on the odometer that could of ended horribly given the amount of traffic on the highway when this happened. My wife normally drives it and babies it and we've never been hard on it. I love the truck but feel a bit disheartened given what has happened and not sure if this was the right truck for us. Ford Canada & the dealer have been great in assisting with getting us a rental but all of this has just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I bought a new 2020 For Ranger Lariat. This is a $40k truck. I'm noticing erratic shifting. Its not real bad, but it's noticable. And can get annoying. Also I find the built in fuel mileage calculator is optimistic. I've driven Fords most of my life, so I really don't like reporting this , but true.
