Dennis Brim, a Cybertruck owner from Chicago, says he experienced one of the most embarrassing moments of his life because of his truck.
He explains that he was picking up his daughter from her friend’s house and was relying on Tesla’s full self-driving software during the drive.
The trip went smoothly until Dennis allowed the truck to pull into the driveway on its own. Instead of stopping there, the truck ended up driving straight into the garage door.
This would be frustrating in any situation, but Dennis points out that it was especially humiliating because it happened at his daughter’s friend’s house.
And if Dennis felt this embarrassed, it is easy to imagine how his younger daughter might feel.
Dennis shared his story on the Tesla Cybertruck group on Facebook.
He writes…
“So, I had the most embarrassing thing happen to me yesterday.
I was picking up my daughter from her roommate's house, and my truck drove itself right into the garage door.”
He mentions that he saw the truck approaching the garage door but, trusting the vehicle’s capabilities, decided not to intervene. He explains:
“I saw I was getting close, but I completely trusted the truck because the vehicle had earned my trust.”
After the incident, Dennis said he took full responsibility and offered the family compensation for the damage.
He writes…
“I told the dad, 'Whatever the damages, let me know, I’ll cover it,' but I can’t believe this. I am so embarrassed.”
Finally, Dennis concludes his post by noting that he was using Tesla’s latest FSD software, and his only explanation for why the truck might drive straight through a garage door is that the door was painted black.
Dennis believes the vehicle might have mistaken the black door for a dark spot where it could park.
He continues to write…
“I’m using FSD 14.2. The only thing I can think of is that the garage door was black, and the software might have thought it was darkness and was going to pull into the garage.”
This is definitely not ideal, and if this is the case, it raises further concerns about how the vehicle will handle other dark objects on the road.
Looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners asked for more clarification about the incident.
And Dennis further elaborates writing…
“I backed up, the dad came out, we both looked at the damage, and I just apologized and explained I never had anything like this happen before.
I am the biggest advocate for FSD, so it’s very embarrassing for me.”
Dennis continues to insist that, despite the embarrassment, the incident did not diminish his belief in the Cybertruck and that he used FSD to drive home.
He writes…
“I had to hurry home to get my son to a soccer tournament. I used FSD all the way home without any problem.”
For those in the comments accusing him of trying to hurt Tesla’s brand, Denis also adds…
“I’m not even criticizing Tesla; I’m probably a bigger Tesla fan than anyone. I bought my first Tesla Model X in 2016, and I now own three: a Model Y and a Cybertruck.
I’m always telling people how much stress it relieves to have access to self-driving… I just need Tesla to get it right because I’m also a shareholder.
We can’t have any accidents like this. I came here as a safe space because I hope you all understand how great the product is.”
Finally, in order to protect Tesla’s image, Dennis says he won’t be mentioning this incident to anyone who isn’t a Tesla fan.
He writes…
“I won't mention this to anyone who isn't aware of FSD.”
This is certainly an interesting perspective. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
