A Tesla Cybertruck owner from North Carolina reports that his area was recently hit by a severe hailstorm with hailstones measuring 2 to 3 inches.
However, despite the harsh weather conditions, his Cybertruck, parked outside at the time, came out mostly unscathed.
On the other hand, he mentions that his wife’s Tesla Model 3, parked next to his Cybertruck, did not fare well.
The Model 3’s rear glass was completely shattered, and the aluminum body had about 20 dents on each panel.
In comparison, his Cybertruck’s stainless steel did not have a single dent, and the truck’s shatter-resistant glass also remained intact.
The only minor damage was to the tonneau cover, which had a few shallow dents.
The Cybertruck owner is pleased with how his truck handled the storm and shared his experience on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He writes…
“2-3 inch hailstorm survival results.
There is no body or glass damage to be found on the Cybertruck.
However, the weak point is the tonneau cover. It seems to have four visible dents, based on what I can see.
If you have enough warning, I suggest opening the tonneau cover to prevent hail damage and protect it.
I am quite sure the bed could have remained undamaged with the cover open.
For reference, my wife’s Model 3 did not fare as well; the rear window shattered, and every body panel has about 20 large dents.
She is currently getting an estimate for the damages.”
Below his post, the Cybertruck owner shared a picture of his truck following the hailstorm.
As you can see, the Cybertruck’s tonneau cover has three shallow dents, but aside from that, the truck appears undamaged.
What’s interesting here is the comparison with the wife’s Model 3: her rear glass is shattered, and the vehicle has countless large dents that require thousands of dollars in repairs.
Meanwhile, the Cybertruck’s cold-rolled stainless steel has withstood the hailstorm without a single damage.
Even more impressive, the Cybertruck’s “shatter-resistant” glass appears to have survived unscathed.
Tesla states that the Cybertruck’s glass is rated to withstand Class 4 hail, the highest standard for residential roofing materials.
This means the Cybertruck glass can withstand the same impact as high-quality residential roofing.
Tesla’s Cybertruck durability claims might seem overblown; however, in this instance, the Cybertruck’s sturdy material choice seems to have paid off in the real world.
If only Tesla could improve the Cybertruck’s reliability, maybe it would live up to its “apocalypse-ready” slogan.
Looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners were happy to see their truck overcoming a real-world harsh environment.
Having said that, some wondered if the hailstorm broke the automatic tonneau cover. However, the owner responds that he has already tested it and that, despite the dents, it works perfectly.
He writes…
“Of the two or so times I cycled the tonneau cover, there were no issues.”
Overall, it’s great to see the Cybertruck demonstrate its durability in real-world, challenging conditions. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
