Another GM 10-speed transmission bites the dust.
Imagine owning a new GMC Sierra pickup with only 6,500 miles on it. Your transmission failed, and now your truck has been at the dealer for over 60 days.
Matheus Picceli, a proud owner of a 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3-liter 1500 5.3-liter with a 10-speed transmission, shared his story of a failed transmission on the GMC Sierra Owner's Facebook page. His experience is not unique, as many other 2024 GMC Sierra and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owners are facing similar issues.
He says, "My 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3L V8 (6,500 miles) has been waiting on transmission parts for over 60 days. I've filed a claim through BBB Autoline, but GM is delaying the process."
"I'm reaching out to see if anyone knows about a class-action lawsuit related to the 10-speed transmission."
This Is Not An Isolated Problem
I recently wrote a report on a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owner with a failed 10-speed transmission with only 11K miles. Check out Rachel's frustrating story here. She was on a road trip when her transmission failed, leaving her stranded in the middle of nowhere.
What are Other GMC Sierra Owners Saying?
Katie Szymanski - The same thing happened to me; on January 9, 2025, I towed the truck to the dealership. I have a 2024 GMC 1500 SLE 5.3-liter V8. I have only owned the truck since August 2024, with under 10,000 miles on the truck.
Transmission Valve body failure, NO ETA for a replacement valve body, today is 2/25/2025 Nothing! So pissed with GM, I filed a case with GM that's not doing anything to help me, filed with the highway safety administration.
Adam Cummings - GM is not delaying the process. Parts are not available. The last valve body I ordered for a 10-speed took almost 2 months to come. They are shipping as fast as they can build them, and there is basically a waiting list.
Dale Helmick - My 2019 Sierra 106,000 miles is headed back in for the 5th time. It's my 4th torque converter, and now something else is vibrating, and on top of that, a cylinder gasket is leaking oil. If you buy a used one, make sure you pick up the extended warranty!
Marty Sica - I keep telling you guys there is a recall on both transmissions! I got my letter months ago and brought it to the dealer. They updated and reprogrammed it, covering it for 6 years and 150k. I have a 2021 3500 Silverado High Country Duramax! Check into it.
General Motors Issues a Recall
In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks; however, the recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.
GM faces a class action lawsuit over defective transmissions.
The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions.
The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.
Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and the newer Silverado and Sierra trucks?
Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.
According to discussions on Reddit, there are reports of transmission issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra, with users mentioning problems like torque converter failures, "blown valve bodies," and concerns about the transmission running too hot, leading to potential premature wear and tear, particularly when towing heavy loads. Some users even claim these issues are frequent enough to warrant other potential class action lawsuits against GM.
GM knows there is a problem, but they don't have the parts to fix the transmissions.
On the GMC Sierra Facebook owner page, AC says that GM made his payments, and the dealer gave him a brand new Traverse High Country to drive for 8 months. "It literally was a truck for sale on the lot and had plastic still on seats," he said.
GMC told him, "We are experiencing a delay on parts needed to repair your 2021 Chevrolet Silverado. We understand this is a significant inconvenience, and we will continue to work diligently to resolve the delay."
Final Thoughts and Questions For Silverado and Sierra Truck Owners
General Motors has not fixed the problem with the 2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado truck transmissions.
To make the problem worse, GM doesn't have the parts to fix the transmissions, so customers like Matheus will have to wait months for their new trucks to be fixed.

I have a 2023 AT4HD 3500 with the Allison 10 speed. Broke down with 33,800 miles on it. Broke down 27 March 2025. Going on 7 weeks now without my truck. Gave me a Hertz Malibu to drive. The Malibu doesn’t even begin to perform in the manner for which I bought it for. No one can tell me when I will get my truck back. The part number for the valve body has been changed by GM 3 times since the truck broke down. The truck now sits at a dealer 90 miles from my home because GM wouldn’t pay to have it towed to the dealer where I bought it from. Was told by a source at a dealer to expect 2 to 4 months to get truck back. There are other trucks sitting for same problem at dealers. Was told several have been the for 3 months already. Not a happy camper!

I own a 2023 GMC 2500 SLT HD Duramax with < 30K miles. Up until last weekend my wife and I love the truck. It just went into the shop and I’m told it needs a valve body. Worse, there’s no ETA on the part and 2 trucks ahead of me have been sitting for 30 days. I’m shocked and dismayed that it’s acceptable that my $80K truck will sit for 30 days or more because GM mismanaged parts inventories. It’s shocking to me that GM obviously has the parts… as they are continuing to produce new vehicles and generate sales… while my truck that I’m making payments on is sitting idle. Worst, my wife and I are having to cancel a vacation we’ve planned for one year because of this. Can I rent an HD and proceed? Maybe. But GMC only covers $44 per day against a $150 per day rental. I have to say… I’m a fairly simple person. I researched this truck and bought instead of Ram and Ford because of the reported reliability. To me, this is stealing. GMC should not be producing new vehicles with parts that are needed to meet their obligations to current owners.

2023 GMC Sierra AT4 50000km
Valve body failure. Truck has been in the shop for 4 weeks; since April 25, 2025. No ETA on replacement valve body.
Symptoms:
Transmission temps above 200 degrees at idle after 5mins of staring. Truck went in to limp mode. Starts off in 5th gear. Loud clunk when shifting from D-R. Turned truck off for 10min, back to normal but MIL light illuminated and won’t clear.
Dealer and GM Canada not offering compensation for payments made, insurance, depreciation due to know issue with 10L80, lost revenue. Warranty is not being extended. No recall issued. New valve body same part number as original valve body. Dealer says fluids are fine and no damage to trans. Determined this without dropping then transmission pan.

Unfortunately, my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 experienced a transmission failure about an hour ago with only 11,000 miles on it. While driving, the check engine light came on, the vehicle lost power, and a warning message appeared instructing me to drive slowly and take the truck in for service.
I pulled over to the shoulder, and when attempting to reverse, the transmission would not engage. A tow truck is currently en route to transport the vehicle to the GMC dealership. I’m hopeful they’ll be able to diagnose and resolve the issue promptly.

I have a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Pro series, 5.3L and 10 speed transmission. I currently have 23XXX miles on it and it is currently in the shop. This the 3rd or 4th time I have brought it in for shuddering. It happens between 30 -50 mph when I let off the gas a little. I have been told that they could not duplicate the problem the first time and then the last shop visit was told it is caused by the feature which shuts off 4 of the 8 cylinders. I knew that was BS. If that feature is what caused the shudder then EVERY truck with that would be doing it. This time I was told they are thinking it maybe transmission related. I will see. I am considering lawyering up

My truck's transmission went May 15 2025, a 2023 Sierra I bought new about the end of July 2023.
It's been 67 days! And today, July 21, I was just called and told the part is in, and "should" have the truck back this week.
To Date, GMC has paid for the rental, which was a headache in itself to get a proper replacement.
Besides that, we have made about $2,761 in payments on a vehicle we haven't been able to use.

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with a 3.0 L Duramax diesel motor. I bought it brand new from a dealer (Davis GM in Lethbridge, Alberta) in July of 2023. In May of this year (2025) the check engine light came on and I took it to our local GM dealer (Cochrane GM) as it should be covered under warranty
The dealer has been great and coordinated somewhat of a replacement. It is not the same level of vehicle and is unable to pull our recreational trailer. Driving the replacement is costing money out of pocket as the fuel economy is not even close to our truck. This has also disrupted our summer plans due to the inability to pull our trailer.
The local dealer confirmed it would be covered under warranty and they were trying to get the part (valve body for the transmission). They came back with bad news that the part was on back order and not even in production. I began reaching out to GM Concierge every week only to be told the same story, the part back ordered and not in production and the dealer is the best place for information. This is not a dealer issue as they cannot replace a part supplied from GM Canada; yet GM is sending how many trucks off the assembly line every day.
It has now been 10 weeks since my truck has gone into the shop and there is not even an estimate as to when the parts may become available. After many phone calls and discussions, it has come to light that this is a common issue on this model of truck. Cochrane GM has 4 trucks on their lot alone that require this part. Meanwhile, we continue to make large vehicle payments and insurance payments for a vehicle we do not have the ability to use. At what point does this level of disruption and cost become unacceptable as GM certainly seems to be in no hurry to rectify a known problem.
I will continue my weekly phone calls to GM Concierge and will be pushing for some sort of compensation and also a full transmission replacement as I am skeptical of the quality of the part I may end up with when it comes available.

I bought my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation with the 3.0 Duramax in May of 2024 with 6200 miles on it. At about 24,000 miles the transmission started dropping out and going into limp mode. Dealer said to keep driving it since they didn't have any loaners for me. I drove it for another 10,00, miles until it just wasn't drivable anymore. Now the dealer has had it for 3 months with no end in sight. They have put me in 2 different loaner trucks now and have limited me to 50 miles per day.. I drive about 100 every day to and from work.. It is frustrating. I went through the whole Nissan Titan XD Cummins 5.0 crankshaft issue last year. My 2017 Titan broke the crank on the interstate at 70 mph with only 100,771 miles on it. Nissan told me too bad so I bought a GM.. It's not looking much better at this moment..

Bought a used 2024 GMC Sierra with 10-speed transmission in March 2025. My husband and I LOVED this truck. That is until the transmission issues started just under 40,000km (lost reverse, intermittently lost power driving). It's been sitting at the dealer for almost 2 weeks with transmission parts on backorder and no idea when they are going to come in. From reading these messages from other owners, looks like it might be awhile. Had to chase the service manager at the dealership and then call GMC Canada to even get a car rental on Day 10. We bought a truck because we need the functionality of a truck, yet I am driving a small Buick car. How can companies continue to get away with this? If they have the parts for new trucks, they damn well better have the parts for trucks needing repair. Will be telling everyone I know to avoid GM. We have talked about trading it in when we get it back from the dealership. Never again GM
