Nearly 300 Chevrolet Corvette drivers gathered on Sunday to create a giant flag celebrating America's 250th anniversary. The cars assembled to form a red, white and blue flag on Belle Isle, an island just off the city of Detroit. Organizers chose Flag Day to create the symbolic formation. They are hoping that the participation sets a record for “largest American flag formation made with cars.”
America’s Cherished Sports Car
The Chevrolet Corvette was created in 1953 and is now in its 8th generation. Chevrolet switched to the mid-engine design in 2020. It is considered GM’s “Halo car” and often debuts the automaker’s latest and greatest innovations. The Corvette holds the record for being the longest running, continuously produced sports car in America. It is built in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
As I’ve reported, recent iterations of the Corvette have set incredible records for speed and performance. In March, I reported the Corvette set a lap record so fast that it surprised the magazine that was testing it. “Chevrolet is celebrating one of the most incredible records in automotive history. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 just set the record lap at Car and Driver’s annual Lightning Lap shootout. The Corvette ZR1 set the fastest lap in the history of the test. Chevy engineers will tell you that ZR1 was born to smash lap records and top timing charts. I’ve done several stories on records the ZR1 has set at different test tracks. This one is different because it is put on by one of the most respected automotive magazines in the world and a lot of the conditions were out of the automaker’s control. It was at a track Corvette has tested before.”
In October of 2024, I reported that the 2025 ZR1 set a record of 233 MPH at a track in Germany.
Last July, I reported that the 2026 ZR1 and ZR1X set records at the famous Nurburgring track. These are just some of the reasons that the love for the Chevrolet Corvette endures.
The America 250 Event
The flag formation event on Belle Isle was organized by Michigan Corvette Events, a Michigan-based nonprofit, and longtime Corvette community organizer Larry Courtney. Courtney and his wife, Verna, are well known in Corvette circles for enthusiast-driven events including Corvettes on Woodward, Corvettes on the Island at Belle Isle, and leadership roles in the National Corvette Caravan. This homegrown Michigan effort is built by the Corvette community itself with owners expected from across the country for an ambitious Flag Day tribute celebrating America 250, and honoring veterans.
Chevrolet provided support vehicles for the massive undertaking, including a few Corvette Grand Sports and Corvettes from the Stars and Steel collection as well as trucks from the Stars and Steel collection.
Chevrolet also donated $20,000 to four different veteran’s organizations that were honored during the celebration.
