If you have not experienced a new Grand Cherokee in a while, you really should. Always a great luxury SUV with amazing capabilities, the 2026 Summit is one of the most luxurious SUVs you can buy today. We were impressed by the quality and workmanship of the interior, the outstanding ride, and the many practical features that Jeep incorporated into this vehicle at the available lease price. Here’s what we loved most about this vehicle, and what Jeep needs to change to truly claim the summit of the segment.
The Interior and Exterior - Simply Gorgeous
The Grand Cherokee is a looker from every angle. It’s more impressive in person than the images we took convey. It looks like a fine luxury vehicle because it is. The Steel Blue paint is a novel color, and we loved the look. It would also handle winter salt and sand well and not look dirty like dark black or red would.
Inside the Tupelo (orange-tan) and Black interior scheme, with premium Palermo leather, is stunning. Don't worry about all that piano black trim. It can be polished if scratched. The open-pore wood trim, padded dash, and the microfiber suede A-pillar covers and headliner with power glass shade all impress. The quilted door card inserts are a great touch. The interior borders on busy, but we took to it, and loved it even more on day seven than on day one.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: The Size
The Grand Cherokee is right-sized for many who want more space and more safety than a compact crossover can offer. Everywhere, the Grand Cherokee is roomy and comfortable. The 38 cubic feet of cargo volume feels generous compared to the typical five-passenger vehicle, and it expands to 71 cu ft. The loading floor is flat. The rear seats have ample room for kids’ car seats, though we didn't try them, so be sure you do before buying. Headroom is adult-sized in the back.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: Novel Features
We found the massage seats addictive. The 19-speaker McIntosh Audio is a step up from the typical sound system. There is a full-size spare under the cargo floor. One simple feature we noted was that Jeep relocated the cargo door button to the side panel inside the rear area. It makes it so much easier to use rather than reach way up high. I’m not a fan of kick to operate rear doors, and my shoulders appreciated this thoughtful touch.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: How’s It Drive?
The best aspect of this great vehicle is its driving experience. The air suspension is smooth over small road imperfections, and large bumps don't upset it much. Over dirt roads, it was smooth and handled washboard sections very well. On smooth back-country mountain roads, it was a joy to drive. On a trip to the summit of New Hampshire's Pack Monadnock, the Jeep GC seemed right at home. Jump to our next section to hear about around-town driving.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: Let’s Talk About the Engine
This top-of-the-line Jeep doesn't have the Wrangler’s available 392 CID V8 or the Durango’s 6.2-liter Supercharged engine. It’s not electric, and it’s not a hybrid of any type. Stopping to pause here. If this is the “Summit,” why does it have a four-cylinder engine with no added electric motors?
In town, the Summit was a bit herky-jerky. It shuts off at stop signs and then shudders back to life when you want to quickly merge into a traffic slot. That’s not a premium feeling at all. Toyota/Lexus has electrified gas engines without any of this behavior on vehicles costing less. Honda's Passport has a buttery-smooth V6. In 2026, premium means seamless, efficient, high-torque, and silent. The Grand Cherokee's four-cylinder engine offers none of those attributes.
My colleague, Kamil K., who owns vehicles in this segment and has a passion for off-pavement-capable SUVs, crafted a positive review on YouTube, noting that the GC Summit makes some compromises. Most clearly in its engine bay. Rather than more displacement, I’d much rather have the Summit come equipped with electric motors to support its combustion engine. Adding cylinders would not improve the 22 MPG result we observed. It would probably hurt fuel economy and would not add any torque. Overall, it was the many quick, abrupt shifts that we felt hurt this vehicle’s vibe. So let's kick them to the curb.
Floor the GC Summit, and it flies. Believe me, you don't need more power. It's there if you need it. Kamil K. called it "a manic, unrefined energy." What’s missing is the smooth transition from a start offered by a simple hybrid system, and the first few hundred feet of acceleration, where you should not need the engine on at all in normal daily driving. A hybrid would make this vehicle feel more premium, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce its environmental impact.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: The Reliability
The second area Jeep needs to up its game is reliability. We checked out Consumer Reports’ owner-reported reliability scores for this GC Summit, and what we found was disturbing. Since its 2022 redesign, the Grand Cherokee has never earned a score above the 30s on a 1-100 scale, with 100 being perfect. The areas of concern are all over the map. Build Quality, Steering, and In-vehicle Electronics. If Jeep wants this vehicle to stand above the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota 4Runner, and the Honda Passport, Jeep needs to roughly double its reliability score.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: Pricing
Our test vehicle had a base price of $60,600. Consumer costs added to that would be the very steep $1,995 Destination charge, dealer doc fees, a subscription-based hands-free driving assist system, a $995 Advanced tech package that added animal detection, night vision, a HUD, and a windshield wiper de-icer. Personally, I really want that windshield de-icer, but not if I have to pay for the rest of the stuff.
We always price out our media test vehicles using the manufacturer's online build tool, just in case the price has increased since it was added to the fleet. We were happy to find that Jeep is offering $3,000 in lease incentives on this very vehicle without any negotiations. Drop the two pricy packages, factor in the online discount, and you are looking at about $60K cap cost out the door. That is not meaningfully higher in consumer cost than many vehicles that look pretty frumpy side by side with this splendid Jeep. If you don’t drive a lot of miles, are lease-savvy, and can find a good lease deal on this Jeep after the $3K is considered, it is a no-brainer. Leasing also nicely side-steps any reliability issues.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: American-Made Like No Other (Except Honda)
One big plus for me as a shopper is if a vehicle is produced in America. All things equal, I’ll lean toward an American-made vehicle, and even pay more for it. The Grand Cherokee is built in Detroit, and its engine and transmission are also American-Made. It has a 73% U.S./Canada parts content. That makes it a real rival for the Honda Passport, which, you may be surprised to learn, has a similar level of American-made credibility.
2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4: The Verdict
Having spent a week in the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4, we are happy to report that this is an outstanding vehicle. We are critical of only two areas of this luxury SUV, and neither is a deal breaker from our perspective. Rather, areas for improvement. The ride and the interior styling are the Grand Cherokee Summit’s best attributes. We’d cross-shop this vehicle against the Honda Passport, Toyota 4Runner, and Toyota Land Cruiser, and having tested them, it would be very hard not to drive home in the Jeep.
