The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Set a Track Record so Fast, It Surprised Even the Respected Car Magazine that Was Testing It

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 beat out several cars that cost millions more than the Corvette.

Chevrolet is celebrating one of the most incredible records in automotive history. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 just set the record lap at Car and Driver’s annual Lightning Lap shootout. The Corvette ZR1 set the fastest lap in the history of the test. Chevy engineers will tell you that ZR1 was born to smash lap records and top timing charts. I’ve done several stories on records the ZR1 has set at different test tracks. This one is different because it is put on by one of the most respected automotive magazines in the world and a lot of the conditions were out of the automaker’s control. It was at a track Corvette has tested before.

According to Chevrolet,

“The ZR1 posted a time of 2:34.2 on Virginia International Raceway’s (VIR) 4.1-mile Grand Course, topping the charts at the 2026 edition of Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap and conquering some of the fastest production cars on earth along the way.

Of course, the Corvette ZR1 has already proved its vast capabilities at VIR. With General Motors driver Aaron Link at the wheel, the Corvette ZR1 snatched VIR’s Grand Course production car lap record last year. In addition to its VIR Grand Course record, the Corvette ZR1 owns the production-car record at three other historic American tracks – Watkins Glen’s Long Course, Road America, and Road Atlanta. The ZR1 even doubled down at VIR, posting a production record of 1:47.7 on the track’s “Full Course” configuration.”

“When developing a Corvette, VIR is a benchmarking and validation tool for our team because it offers challenges many other tracks across the US can’t match. Once I set our lap times at VIR, our team waited with anticipation for the Lightning Lap invitation. We’re thrilled that K.C. Colwell laid down the fastest lap in Lightning Lap history in a Corvette ZR1. It’s a testament to what the GM team is capable of.”

Scott Bell, Chevrolet’s Global Vice-President said,

“Moments like this don’t happen by accident. They’re the result of relentless teamwork, deep expertise, and a shared belief in what’s possible.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 set the fastest lap in the 19 year history of Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap, surpassing every car in the outlet’s higher priced category, and the prior overall record set by the McLaren Senna —an achievement that speaks volumes about the passion and precision behind this car and the people who bring it to life. From engineering and design to manufacturing, this is another example of the Chevrolet team at our best.”

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 as Tested

  • Base Price: $216,380
  • As Tested Price: $238,695
  • Power : 1064 horsepower

At its annual Lightning Lap shootout, now in its 19th year, Car and Driver’s editors convene to pit the year’s newest and hottest production cars against the demanding curves of VIR’s Grand Course. This year, the Corvette ZR1 outpaced a varied field of more than a dozen cars, cementing the car’s legacy among the test’s many historic and much more pricey competitors.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 – the most powerful engine ever offered in a production Corvette – the ZR1 with ZTK Performance Package sprints to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and the quarter mile in just 9.6 seconds. The ZR1 has a quarter-mile trap speed of 150 mph.

The VIR road course challenges every car with a series of harrowing, high-speed esses, and more than a few tricky low-speed moments. The Corvette competes with its standard carbon-ceramic brakes and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The ZR1 did its testing equipped with the available ZTK Performance Package.

With its advanced aerodynamics and perfectly tuned handling, the ZR1 rivaled and beat the world’s most elite supercars.

Car and Driver said in its article, “The only thing you think about when booking it down the Front Straight on your way to 179.0 mph (a new record) in the Corvette ZR1 is when you'll brake.” The writer continues “Strap the eff in if you want to go ten-tenths in a ZR1, because it's so fast that it changes the track by shrinking it.”

“The second big-speed zone is at the entrance to the Climbing Esses. Finding the courage to turn into the four-corner shimmy flat at 166.2 mph came at the cost of one destroyed carbon-fiber front wheel ($6060 at the parts counter) when we clipped the curbing's leading edge. When we got it right, the ZR1 clobbered the Climbing Esses record, averaging 141.2 mph, 5.2 mph better than the Porsche GT3 RS from two years ago.”

Being able to do 5mph better than a Porsche GT3 is unheard of. Car and Driver describes every turn and straight away as the ZR1 races toward the record. The participants must have nerves of steel as they blast through the course at high speed. I’ve been on rides with race car drivers and with test drivers but these speeds and G-forces are incredible. Of course it is a closed course and highly fortified with safety barriers.

Car and Driver wraps up with,

“We knew the ZR1 had a good chance at toppling the McLaren Senna's 2:34.9 lap from seven years ago, but we weren't sure exactly how it would do it. The Senna is 869 pounds lighter and has active aero. Despite this, and the cars' similar pounds-per-horsepower quotients (3.7 for the ZR1, 3.8 for the Senna), the ZR1 was 6.1 mph faster on the Front Straight. The new LL record isn't due solely to straight-line speed, though; the ZR1's high-speed handling earned it top honors in the Climbing Esses too.

High Five

The Corvette ZR1 hit 179.0 mph, unseating the McLaren 765LT for highest observed speed at Lightning Lap. The Lamborghini Temerario had a good showing too, its 173.6 mph nabbing third overall. Still, McLarens dominate the top-five list.”

Car and Driver Lightning Lap Top Five

  • 179.0 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
  • 174.6 McLaren 765LT
  • 173.6 Lamborghini Temerario
  • 172.9 McLaren Senna
  • 171.7 McLaren 720S

I personally find it amazing that Corvette has packed so much horsepower into a street-legal stock vehicle. Yes, the ZR1 is expensive, but several of the competitors are priced in the millions. It set a new record that will more than likely stand for years.
