2015 Ram 3500 Packs More Torque, Better Capabilities Than the 2015 Ford F350

The 2015 Ford F350 Super Duty was expected to be the most powerful truck in the segment, but the 2015 Ram 3500 has gotten a bump in torque for the new model year that bests the Ford by just a touch and the Chevy Silverado by a ton – while the Ram continues to be the most capable one ton truck in America in terms of payload and towing as well.

There are few segments in the American auto industry that are more hotly contested than the full sized truck group and earlier this year, Ford Motor Company announced that the 2015 Super Duty would come with a new high output PowerStroke diesel engine that packs an awesome 440 horsepower and 860lb-ft of torque. That would have allowed the 2015 F350 to pack 55 more horsepower and 10lb-ft more torque than the Ram 3500 with the Cummins Turbo Diesel…until the folks at Chrysler announced the specs for the 2015 Ram Heavy Duty lineup.

Included for the 2015 model year is a new Cummins diesel engine that makes 865lb-ft of torque – making the Ram the most powerful truck in the class in the power figure that counts most in the world of hard workin’ trucks.

Ram Beats Ford in Torque, Payload and Towing
The 2015 Ford F350 Super Duty is powered by a 6.7L PowerStroke diesel that delivers 440 horsepower and 860lb-ft of torque which, in the right configuration, allows owners to haul an impressive 7,090 pounds in the bed and tow 26,700 ponds on a 5th wheel setup. The 2015 Ram 3500 is powered by a 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel that delivers “only” 385 horsepower, but with 865lb-ft of torque, it is the most powerful option among ¾ ton and 1 ton trucks. The 2015 Ram 3500 is capable of towing the same 30,000 pounds as the 2014 models with slightly less torque, but the payload capacity is increased to 7,390 pounds…meaning that while the Ram doesn’t pack the raw horsepower, it has the power to out-tow and out-haul the Ford F350 and the Chevy Silverado 3500HD in their strongest configurations.

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is powered by a 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel that produces 397 horsepower and 765lb-ft of torque. In its strongest configurations, the Silverado 3500HD is capable of hauling 7,374 pounds and towing 23,200 pounds. Prior to this bump in torque for 2015, the Ram had trailed the Silverado in payload capacity by 54 pounds, but the added torque and added payload capability has given the Ram the lead in hauling as well…even if only by a small margin.

It should be noted that Ford Motor Company is claiming the most capable truck on the market with their 2015 F450, but when you are shopping strictly for a ¾ ton or 1 ton pickup – the Ram offers the advantage where it really counts.

Other Engines for the 2015 Ram Heavy Duty Lineup
In addition to the new 6.7L High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, the 2015 Ram Heavy Duty lineup has four other engine options depending on the configuration chosen. The “base” engine for the 2015 Ram 2500 and 3500 is the 5.7L Hemi V8 that delivers 383hp and 400lb-ft of torque. Those folks who want a little more power than what is offered by the 5.7L mill can opt for a newer 6.4L Hemi V8 that is based on the high performance SRT engines. This bigger Hemi packs 410 horsepower and 429lb-ft of torque.

Next up are two different non-High Output versions of the Cummins Turbo Diesel for the 2015 Ram 2500 and 3500. Those buyers who want a manual transmission can only select the 6.7L diesel engine with 350 horsepower and 660lb-ft of torque while trucks with an automatic transmission get a similar engine with 370 horsepower and 800lb-ft of torque. The 5th engine option for the 2015 Ram Heavy Duty is the High Output 6.7L Cummins mated to a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

For comparison, the only other engine for the 2015 Ford Super Duty lineup is the 6.2L V8 that offers 385 horsepower and 405lb-ft of torque so while the F250 and F350 can challenge the base 5.7L Hemi, Ram’s 6.4L Hemi offers more gasoline power while the new 6.7L Cummins HO engine leads the diesel trucks in torque. The only other engine offered for the 2015 Silverado 3500HD is the 6.0L V8 with 360 horsepower and 380lb-ft of torque so while the Duramax diesel has the Silverado being at least somewhat competitive with the diesel powered F350 and Ram 3500, the Chevy’s gasoline V8 is by far the weakest of the group.

Ford Motor Company has the most horsepower in the heavy duty truck segment along with having the most powerful 450/4500 level truck in the segment, but with more torque, more payload capabilities and significantly greater towing capacities at the 3500/F350 level – the Ram brand has a clear advantage among the most popular consumer grade trucks on today’s market.

Tanner, you got your numbers wrong. First of all the Ram 3500 packs 410hp not 385. Second of all it has an industry leading 865 lb-ft of torque therefore it has better torque to horsepower ratio effective doing more work and subclassing the F350. You would know this if you actually did your research and knew anything about automotive.

Horsepower is the rate at which you measure work and Ram has the least of it.

In the above article it states that the dodge in question on this article has "only" 385 horse power that is in this article and that is what I based my response off. I also noted that it has 865 lbs torque my argument was that it was only 5 ft lbs torque more than the ford as the ford had 860 ft lbs. You are obviously illiterate and do not pay attention to what you read. For kicks and giggles we will go off of your 410 horsepower model dodge and that is still 30 horsepower less than the ford... Your point? And your saying that 5 ft lbs difference is enough to make it a huge difference?

I am going to chime in on this , Tanner you need to youtube dodge vs ford twist test. I am in the market for a new truck myself and would like all the help I can get? I have driven the ram 1500 eco great ride super smooth, owning a 2009 ram 1500 4X4 hemi with 92K (from new) I can tell you that very little difference on the highway, hemi is stronger getting to speed. I drove the 2500 C and just fell in love with how smooth and quick it is, than drove the ford 250 its junk not even on the same planet, than the chevy 2500 Duramax, the ride is a tad stiffer do to leaf springs rather than the coils on the ram, but I think the chevy shifts better than the ram in town, also coming off the highway the chevy seams to drop speed smoother than the ram. My problem is I am working class stiff , I cannot nor will I pay 3k more for the chevy! I am thankful for all the post about repair problems and cost.

Funny you should mention math James. I doubt that John, a mechanic for 50 years, who has changed hundreds of engines (a rare job even at the busiest dealerships), and gets 29 mpg in a full size pickup, like English, has a very good command of the subject. Just let him sit at his computer in his mom's basement looking at his decals of the kid peeing on the blue oval, wishing he had a truck to put them on. I'm just sorry he can vote!

5 lbs/ft is nothing to brag about when your engine makes far less power overall. Power under the curve is all that matters and the 6.7 Powerstroke still has all contenders beat. Ram can't claim any win except for top # in the power wars. It still gets smoked in performance by the Powerstroke.

Dodge mileage at 29 is a 1500 with a Fiat diesel engine. Three trucks is made for a man who likes truck. So buy the truck that fits you and it will do the job. They all are about the same in horse power and torque. I like chevy so try to prove I am wrong.

I had two 6.0 diesels F350 Super Duty's. In a Legal Class action to try and get some of my lost monies back.
Ford treated me like it was my problem that there lemon was sold to me.
You would think they would try and fix the problems there <<<<< NOPE>>>>>
Brand new Ram 3500 this year. (Already am impressed)
I hope all new Truck owning learn the hard lesson that we had to endure with ford...
Don't buy a ford they will not take care of you if they have problems

Any auto manufacturer would treat you the same. Hopefully you don't have the problems I did when I had my Dodge Jeep grand Cherokee. Dodge was not any better than what you described here. Blaming the customer. Making me come up with every oil change receipt, etc to prove why THIER ENGINE FAILED. In the end, I ended up with a new engine on Dodge. I guess there's a situation to suit everyone's desire. The 2015 ford 6.7 is completely different from what you had. Motor, turbo charger, fuel delivery system, etc. Things that matter. Ford hasn't been in business building automobiles since 1903 for nothing. Dodge has been at automobiles since 1915. I would have like to have owned the Dodge 3500 but I wasn't able to justify owning the truck because it has a Cummins.

I'm getting about 23 hwy and 17 in town. I have a 2015 ram 3500. It doesn't have the aisin trans so it is basically the same as 2500 other than it has leaf springs and the 2500 has coils.

You must have it tuned to be getting that mileage. Dodge's 1500 only just began getting near the mileage your quoting you get with your 3500. I'm sure they'd be interested to hear how your doing that so they can apply it across the board.

Sure, Sure. Dodge has more horsepower and tow capacity. Yeah yeah, I hear it all the time. I was strictly a Dodge guy until the new 2015 ford lineup in HD trucks. When you talk about Dodge being king remember, the difference at the 3500 level, really is negligible. The problem for me is, Dodge doesn't offer the space and ergonomics and some will say, noiseless comfort of the new Ford HD trucks. Sure, now you're going to say exactly what I used to say. "But Dodge has the same if not more cab space." Sure they do but it's not usable space and where it counts. After driving both vehicles, and several times each, I made the switch because in order to get any interior cab space, you have to get a mega cab. Problem is, Dodge doesn't offer the mega cab in a long bed. In my opinion, the Ford excels where passenger space and comfort are concerned, in the truck I need. I've spent all the time making excuses for why I stayed with Dodge. The Cummins and maybe, MAAAAAYBE, the latest AISIN trannie. It's just not enough. I purchased the Ford F-350 Super crew longbed with the 6.7 power stroke D. All the bells and whistles you could get in May of 2014. I now have 32,000 miles and counting. I have absolutely no regrets. Not looking back, especially now that all future Dodges are Fiat products. I'm wondering how long it will be before they make changes to their Cummins lineup???

The problem with Chevy or GMC is they are not rated to tow things. More and more states are having pickups towing trailers to go through weigh stations and be certain about one thing if the GCVWR is being exceeded you will get burnt.
