Some Ford F-150 Owners Can Get $400 Back From Ford Over Frozen Door Lock Settlement

Many 2017-2019 Ford F-150 and F-Series pickup trucks are part of a class action lawsuit settlement. That case has been settled with an agreement by Ford to offer $400 to owners that have had this issue and can prove it.

I’ve written a lot lately about some recalls going on with the Ford F-150 and the Ford Ranger. Most of these issues are minor in nature. However, what has gone mostly unreported (until now) is a class action settlement by Ford over owners who complained of frozen door locks. The complaints, which were plentiful, pertained to certain models of the entire F-Series line, not just F-150, from the 2017 model year.

Ford F-150 Truck Lock Defect Class Action Lawsuit
Ford F-Series pickup truck owners have complained on many forums and Reddit over issues with their door locks freezing up in wintery weather. As those complaints mounted, a class-action lawsuit was pursued.

The complaints state that cold temperatures can cause the door lock to freeze up or even unlatch at times. Ford did eventually issue a technical safety bulletin (not a recall) describing the issue for a limited amount of F-Series pickups.

As a result of the technical safety bulletin a lawyer was able to prove Ford’s culpability and push that Ford knew of the issue and ignored the problem and failed to disclose the issue to owners. The lawsuit was initially dismissed by a judge, but after being amended the lawsuit was able to proceed. Ford reached a settlement regarding this class-action lawsuit.

2018Who Is Entitled to What Over the Ford F-150 Frozen Door Class Action Lawsuit?
The vehicles involved in the lawsuit settlement include: 2015-2019 Ford F-150, 2017-2019 Ford F-250, 2018-2019 Ford F-350, 2017-2019 Ford F-450 and 2017-2019 Ford F-550.

The settlement states that only vehicles built at the Dearborn Assembly Plant before February 26, 2019 or at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant before March 4, 2019 were impacted. However, other vehicles built at the Kentucky Assembly Plant before March 5, 2019 or at the Ohio Assembly Plant before March 11, 2019 were added to the final settlement.

These Ford truck owners who had actual expenses as a result of this frozen door lock issue are entitled to compensation, according to the settlement. These owners must have proof of repair. As such, these owners may be reimbursed by Ford for up to $400. Additionally, Ford truck owners are entitled to free repairs on their door latches, for those affected trucks. Repairs must be made by a Ford dealer before October 31, 2028. All affected owners may also receive $10 from Ford if they aren’t satisfied at all with the door latch performance of the affected trucks.

According to the settlement named in the official lawsuit, Kommer v. Ford Motor Company, Case No. 1:17-cv-00296, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.:
"Dissatisfaction with Door Latch Performance includes a Settlement Class Member experiencing at least one instance of door latch failure on their Class Vehicle such that the door does not open, does not close, or opens while driving, or having a concern that their Class Vehicle may in the future experience such door latch failure."

To obtain payment, the Ford customer must file a "timely, adequately documented claim" within 210 days after the date of entry of the preliminary approval order from the judge. Claims will need to be accurate because the settlement administrator has the right to reject any claim without the required information and documentation.

I got recall notice from Ford. Called dealer told them I needed appt for door recall. They called me back and asked if I actually had this issue happen. It was unusually warm in Indiana this year and I said no. He then told me Ford's policy was not to repair anything unless it actually happens because according to dealer it takes 6 hours to do. A recall is a recall, right?

My 2013 F150 started having this problem after car washes in the winter. I sprayed Boeshield T9 into each latch and it seems to have solved the problem. It is waxy and intended to protect metal from corrosion. Was developed by Boeing.

2016 F-150. Been to the dealer 4 times with videos, pictures, etc. I will be calling today and no doubt scheduling my 5th appt. after a lot of grease, etc, still the problem comes back to haunt me. Why Ford won’t admit its the actuator is beyond me ($$$). Being from Buffalo, I chalked it up to winter weather but my records show last year was June and now it’s August, same problem. - locks won’t unlock with eith key fob or door button.

Owner of 2018 F-150 crew cab, drivers side door will not open from inside, when first bought new soon after had to hit unlock switch to open door from inside took to Ford dealer they said they fixed it, NOT!! Now it will not open at all from the inside, dealership told me to squeeze the handle real hard to open until backorder part comes in, (NOT AGAIN) still waiting after 4 weeks. Would this be a related problem?

Dave Allison (not verified)    October 26, 2020 - 12:38AM

My 2018 Ford F 150 Crew Cab has been in for the repair to all 4 doors during the winter of 2019. As winter has just returned to Alberta my Drivers door has begun to fail again.

I suspect there is a secondary related issue. My 2017 F-150 began getting door ajar warnings at just over 30,000 miles. These can off in the middle of the night setting off the vehicle alarm. First appear on a trip then did not reappear for almost 2 months. Then a few weeks ago it started again. I can be be driving and suddenly the alert appears. If I stop at a light the running boards deploy until I reach 3 MPH when they retract again. I have been sitting still idling while happens repeatedly . Since I get an alert on my Ford app when the alarm goes off I looked for a pattern. It appears to be weather/moisture related. Recently the alarm triggered at temps around 50 degrees. I suspect it first it is condensation and secondly metal contracting. Ford Dealer says it is not freezing so not covered. As I am a month out of warranty they want $500 to replace they latch assembly. If it is condensation then surely it will freeze if left out in freezing weather . Tried all of the spray lubes suggested and the next time we dipped under 50% and that passenger door was opened, it all happened again. Based on the settlement, I should be covered as I have good reason to believe it will freeze.

MY 2013 f150 doors on right side won't open, once before only driver door opened, bought of used lot six months ago. Into their shop twice and worked okay for while. Now no unlock function key fob or either door arm rest unlock function will work. Puzzeled and wondering if ties into door frozen lawsuit that applies to 2015+2020 f 150,? Going to Ford dealer monday in desperation before driver door quits too. That happened once already but guy told me walk around truck and work unlock function on fob. It worked as I passed right forward door wheww! Fob batteries good and neither one will open... Driver door locks okay at moment. Have a nice Thanksgiving!

We have a 2017 Ford Explorer at the shop now, passenger front door won’t lock or unlock. They want to charge $500 at dealership to fix. Does this lawsuit cover all 2017 Fords? We’ve had many issues with this Ford (never experienced issues with our Lexus for more than 10-years). Quite disappointed in Ford. Suggestions?

Heather noe (not verified)    January 7, 2021 - 6:02AM

We just bought a 2018 f150 supercrew. The driver's side rear door lock has frozen up twice on us! How is this not a safety issue? You can be driving down the road and the door fly open. Wake up ford! That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

2018 f150. Has been to dealer every winter since purchase for frozen drivers door latch. Dealer completed tsb multiple times and eventually replaced door latch mechanism. Problem still exists. Just left dealership and am contacting ford customer service for options.

I have a 2018 F-150, have the back doors fixed about a year or so ago, no my front doors are doing the same thing, not locking. I contacted ford dealer about this and they tell me since I am over the 36,000 miles that it is not covered.

2017 F150- Kansas City. I’m not understanding this lawsuit settlement. My door locks have frozen both not to shut and lock me out. Dealer says they’ll order parts.
But this problem has caused major inconvenience and now trips to Dealer. And if I’m reading this right, I might get $10 out of $millions awarded. Awarded to who?

Jim (not verified)    February 10, 2021 - 12:53PM

I live in alberta Canada and have had many issues with my doors not closing or opening while driving and not even in extreme cold as it happened in as warm as -5° c. I doubt the dealership even looks at it or changed the parts the said they did. No apologizes or even mention of the class action lawsuits filed against them. We don't have a lemon law like in the states so I am stuck paying 53,000 dollars for a vehicle that I have almost fallen out of several times.

About a year or so ago I asked, at my dealership, about the service bulletin. I was was told there not a problem in Alabama region.
This morning my driver's door would not latch. About 20 degree weather. 2-16-21
Went to my dealership and they said I needed to schedule an appointment. They said they may take two days, since they would have to btalk to the technician to see if he could work on it. Confused,? Me too.

MARK D DAVIS (not verified)    February 17, 2021 - 8:04AM

Had the problem this morning, in S GA, we do not get much cold weather here. Will the door latch fix itself when it warms up or will it have to be replaced to work. Driving with a door open is concerning.

STEVE HAHN (not verified)    February 19, 2021 - 8:38PM

We have a 2018 F150, rear door would not open, then when it did, it would not shut, we have had key fob issues, a new computer installed the runs the locks, the rear tail gate was opening on its own, amongst other issues, not happy with truck, but replacement is too expensive as this one is paid off

Dustin Hill (not verified)    February 20, 2021 - 7:50PM

I have a 2017 F350 with 28,000 miles. Driver door latch was replaced 3 times. They finally fixed it. Now the drivers rear door is doing the latch freezing and my Ford Dealer says they have to fill the door with foam and put sealant on the creases in the door frame above the latch. They said it’s on the TSB sheet. If it fails after that then they say Ford will replace the latch. Is this true? I feel I’m getting pushed around after paying this much for a Truck.?

Darren (not verified)    February 22, 2021 - 7:04PM

I’ve had problems with my doors ever since I’ve taken it in for the recall. I have a 2016 F150 platinum. I brought the truck in four times. The last time I just brought it in they told me that the recall had been completed, and it was no longer fords responsibility to fix. I’ve had to use the blow dryer. I’ve had the door locks freeze down had to crawl through other doors to get in. My door is still free shot when the temperature gets around zero. I can’t believe that Ford is not willing to fix the problem.
