An owner’s 884-mile Midwest run shows how convincing Ford’s smallest truck can feel with a trailer. It also shows why a calm tow and a healthy-looking dashboard are only the beginning of a useful towing report.

Austin Jobes bought his 2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid XLT with the 4K Tow Package, then gave it the sort of assignment that makes the word “compact” disappear from the conversation. He and his family drove from mid-Michigan to Wisconsin with an 18-foot utility trailer, picked up a four-wheeler, and headed home.

The trailer weighs about 1,800 pounds. Jobes estimated the ATV at another 700 pounds. That puts the known load at roughly 2,500 pounds before counting tie-downs, a spare tire, fuel in the ATV, tools, or anything else carried on the trailer.

His verdict was the sentence every truck engineer wants an owner to write: 

“Couldn’t even really tell it was back there.”

The Maverick spent about half the drive at 60 mph and the other half at 70. In Jobes’ photos, the trip computer shows 21.6 mpg after 728.5 miles and 20.9 mpg after 884.7 miles. The longer reading covered 16 hours and seven minutes of driving. Those are impressive cumulative numbers for a pickup that had a utility trailer attached for part of the trip, though they should not be mistaken for a hand-calculated result from the loaded return leg alone.

Then Jobes noticed something that complicated an otherwise effortless first tow.

“On the way home, I saw that the temps were up one bar,” he wrote. He also felt some additional warmth around the footwell, although he said he did not notice it until after looking at the gauge.

The Maverick was pulling about 63 percent of its advertised maximum

Ford rates the 2026 Maverick Hybrid AWD to tow up to 4,000 pounds when it has the 4K Tow Package. The package adds the equipment that matters here, including an upgraded cooling fan, an integrated trailer brake controller, a Class III two-inch receiver, and both four-pin and seven-pin wiring. Ford lists a maximum payload of 1,400 pounds for the hybrid AWD, while warning that the real number changes with configuration, passengers, accessories, and cargo.

Jobes’ known trailer load was around 1,500 pounds below that 4,000-pound ceiling. That margin helps explain why the Maverick did not feel strained. It does not settle the entire weight question.

The ATV’s approximate weight and the trailer’s empty weight leave several items uncounted. The truck’s payload label also has to absorb the occupants, cargo in the cab and bed, hitch hardware, and the trailer’s tongue weight. A trailer can sit comfortably below the maximum tow rating while pushing the truck close to its payload or axle limits. The clean answer comes from the Maverick’s door-jamb label and a scale ticket with the combination loaded exactly as it traveled.

Trailer brakes matter as well. The 4K package gives the driver a factory controller, but the post does not say whether this particular trailer had brakes, whether they were connected, or how the controller was set. Jobes also did not answer a commenter who asked whether he used Tow/Haul mode. Both details belong in the next report.

One extra bar deserves attention without earning an overheating diagnosis

The dashboard photos do not show an over-temperature warning. The coolant gauge remains outside the red area, and the amber symbol above the trip display is the windshield-washer-fluid warning.

Ford’s 2026 Maverick owner’s manual identifies the left-side display as the engine-coolant-temperature gauge. Ford’s current coolant guidance says an “Engine Coolant Over Temperature” message calls for the driver to stop safely, shut the vehicle off, and let it cool.

Jobes reported no such message, no red-zone reading, no loss of power, and no drivability problem. One additional bar under sustained load can reflect the cooling system doing its job. It cannot establish a defect from a pair of photographs.

The warmer footwell is equally inconclusive. Engine load, exhaust temperature, road speed, outside temperature, HVAC settings, and the position of the driver’s feet could all influence what he felt. Diagnosing that sensation from a social-media post would be guesswork.

I would still record it. A new truck that repeats the same gauge movement under the same load is giving its owner useful information about its thermal behavior. If the gauge continues climbing, enters the warning area, triggers a message, reduces power, or leaves coolant below the specified level after the truck is fully cold, the situation has crossed into a different category.

The two dashboard photos tell a narrower story than the headline numbers suggest

Between the two photos, the trip odometer rises by 156.2 miles, while the displayed average falls from 21.6 to 20.9 mpg. Because those averages cover hundreds of miles and are rounded to one decimal place, they cannot produce a precise return-trip fuel-economy result. They do show that the towing segment did not destroy the trip average.

For context, another 2026 Maverick Hybrid owner reported 19 to 22 mpg while towing a 13-foot Casita from Texas to North Carolina. A 2025 Maverick Hybrid AWD towing a Polaris RZR through Idaho returned a hand-calculated 17.8 mpg over 212 miles.

Different trailers, terrain, weather, and measurement methods prevent a direct ranking. Together, those reports place Jobes’ dashboard reading in a credible range while showing why his loaded leg needs its own calculation.

Owner reports become far more valuable when the measurement boundary is clear. A future test should reset a trip meter at the fuel stop, record the trailer’s loaded scale weight, note the outside temperature and wind, and photograph the coolant gauge at the same road speed on comparable terrain. Hand-calculated fuel economy at the next fill would finish the picture.

Even with those unanswered questions, Jobes’ trip says something worthwhile about the 2026 Maverick Hybrid. The truck moved an estimated 2,500-pound trailer load across the Midwest at real highway speeds, felt composed to its driver, and kept a cumulative average near 21 mpg. Its temperature gauge also reminded him that an easy sensation behind the wheel does not erase the work happening under the hood.

For Maverick buyers, that is the useful part of the story. Ford’s little hybrid can make a serious recreational tow feel ordinary. The owner still has to do the unglamorous work: verify every weight, use the towing equipment correctly, and watch the instruments closely enough to notice a single bar.

If you tow with a 2025 or 2026 Maverick Hybrid, I would like to hear the full ledger: loaded trailer weight, tongue weight, door-sticker payload, speed, outside temperature, Tow/Haul use, coolant-gauge behavior, and hand-calculated mpg. Those details will tell us whether Jobes’ experience is typical or simply one very successful first trip.

I haul around 1000 lbs daily here in Austin Tx performing handyman tasks. I also tow with it along with the payload included. I have a 2025 non hybrid Awd unit. No issues and I have 23k on the clock. I added air bags to rear to aid in keeping things steady.

I have the 2024 Maverick with the 2.0 ecoboost, AWD, & the 8 speed automatic. It tows my 12' utility trailer more comfortably than my 2011 Frontier 4X4 did.

As a guy who tows out West, this report isn't overly helpful. When towing on pancake flat roads it's no surprise this vehicle did well. That's not realistic towing however. Add in some hills, let alone mountain passes, and I bet this towing report looks incredibly different.

Interesting article and I have a 2025 Maverick hybrid with 4K towing. The truck has the upgraded cooling fan mentioned in the article but also has a secondary transmission cooler that comes standard with 4K towing and the geared down rear end for better pulling. As a matter of fact 4K towing option has a list of upgrades for under $1K that would cost much more if added later including the integrated brake controller and a real spare tire.
I'd encourage people to consider the 4K towing upgrade just to get a better truck even if you may not plan to be towing.

I have a 2023 AWD ecoboost model with 2k towing.
I've flat towed my 1992 Jeep YJ several times, as well as my utility trailer and a uhaul car trailer.

The truck has handled them all just fine, although I do have an obd2 dongle I use to monitor actual coolant and more importantly transmission temperatures.
I also have an aux braking system I use on the Jeep when towing.

Last trip out I averaged 15-16mpg pulling the 3600lb Jeep

A thorough article. Thank you. There is one important towing variable that is never mentioned in this article. Wind resistance. The trailer he pulled would have minimal wind resistance, especially before adding the load on the trailer. However, hitch up that Airstream trailer depicted at the beginning of the article and the results would have been very different. At speeds of 60 to 70 mph wind resistance can be much more of an issue than the towed weight. MPG starts to drop dramatically at speeds over 50 mph with a trailer that creates considerable wind resistance. Another important variable that did not come into play on this trip is grade. Grades of even just 3 or 4 percent have a substantial impact on towing. Speeds will drop and the cooling system will be stressed to near its limits. Fortunately for this case, the roads he drove were extremely flat.

Even with the trailer brakes, does the 4K towing package manage the regen to aid the braking without overheating? If so, how well does it work? I wonder if the slightly larger Ranger Hybrid will work as well. I had a 2015 Ford F150 Sport with tow package and all those toys as well as the larger gas tank on a 2.7 Ecoboost. We had 4 people and a 1500 lbs load in the bed and still got got 23 to 25 mpg touring around Idaho and Montana. 3 years later, we towed 4000 lbs with 1500 lbs in the bed, and we got 14 to 15 mpg almost all the way to Austin Texas from Tacoma. As an unrelated vehicle towing experience, we had 4 people with a 1500 lbs load/uhaul from Tacoma to Belton Texas a few year earlier. On that journey we averaged 37 - but the worst was 22 mpg going up the Continental Divide, and 42 mpg going down from Amarillo to Belton. That journey was in a 2009 Honda Honda Civic 5 speed automatic. (The F150 2.7 got 24 on same route).
