Toyota Prius Owners Are Asking To Have Their Cars Recalled Due To Theft Of Catalytic Converters

If you have been a victim of catalytic converter theft, you know how devastating it can be. Prius owners are now raising their voices to get Toyota to help them out with the issue. Here is what people are saying.

"The catalytic converter just got stolen from my '07 Prius for the second time in two months — and it took nearly three weeks to get the part in to fix it the first time because this is happening to so many people."

Imagine you as a Prius owner having your catalytic converter stolen not once but twice. Now imagine you have shelled out over $5,000 to get your car back on the road. Now ask yourself, does this seem okay? Your answer is more than likely going to be no. Sadly, this is not the first time, and it will not be the last time we hear this scenario.

Time and again, people all over the world driving Toyota Prius' are being robbed, and getting angry. The issue is now where Prius owners ask for Toyota to do something about it.

Prius Owners Are Asking Toyota To Recall And Repair The Vehicles
"Is there any chance Toyota will confess they screwed up, order a recall and install that $300 protective metal plate that should have been there in the first place? How on earth did they not stamp the VIN on the most valuable and easy-to-steal part in the car?"

Toyota Motor North America Corporate Headquarters

Those are strong words from a Prius owner who had her converter stolen twice. She is furious with the scenario that allows low life thieves to profit off of hard-working people. Now, she and others like her are asking Toyota to do something about it. Their reply? You guessed it; they want what is working, what is working is Cat Security™.

Cat Security Is In Demand By Prius Owners
I have followed this story since the inception of it back in October of 2019. They have done nothing but try to get people to understand the issue at hand and then do something about it.

Now people are taking note of what is working, and they are asking for the product by name. "There is a $225 product called Cat Security. It is a shield that bolts to the bottom of a Prius, which blocks access to the car." writes one Prius owner to another who is seeking to protect their vehicle from theft.

Stolen Toyota Prius Catalytic Converter

What is interesting is this. Prius owners are asking Toyota to take the Cat Security protective shield and install it on their cars. Following the story like I have, I find this bit of information amazing. People do not want a Toyota repair; they want a repair that they know is working.

What People Are Saying About Cat Security
I own two Gen 2 Toyota Prius personally, so you can imagine that when I heard my car was at risk and what the repair bill could be, I lost my cool.

If I had to shell out thousands of dollars to repair my car because someone wanted a quick buck, I would want to hold the manufacturer responsible. That is a cost that should not have to be incurred unless the converter did fail.

Toyota Hybrid Shop only installs Cat Security Shields to help Prius owners

When I learned, I could protect my Prius; I bought shields for both of my cars. I am not the only one that thinks Cat Security™ is a great idea, though. I went and pulled some reviews to see what other people were saying about them too.

One product user writes, "After the cat on our Prius was stolen, we were looking to help secure it. Insurance said to build a garage for the car (we live on a steep slope, a garage would be costly). One of the cops who came out said there were plates available that would help secure the unit. I ordered this device and had our mechanic install it. If someone wants to steal the cat, they'll have to drill out the rivets and somehow undo the security screws."

How about that insurance company telling owners to build an entire garage for their car? That is ludicrous.

Conclusion
I think Toyota Motor Corp does need to step in and help out their owners. This is a raging problem that is impacting people everywhere in the world. The fact that Prius owners are calling on Toyota to make it right is not surprising to me in the least. The most surprising thing is that they are asking for a non-Toyota repair.

My question to Toyota is this: What are you going to do to help these owners, and when are you going to do it? Maybe it is time to start a petition to get the attention of Toyota Motor.

To the "one product user". Thanks for giving the instructions on how to remove the catalytic converter shield.

Whilst I have every sympathy with the owners suffering theft of their catalytic converters it must be noted it's the result of criminal activity which is nothing to do with Toyota. My question is who's buying these stolen cat's and what are law enforcement doing about it ? Perhaps Toyota could discount the price of the cat protectors as a gesture but they aren't responsible for the thefts.

Why is this a Prius only issue? Aren't all ICE vehicles vulnerable to the secondary catalytic converter being stolen because it is along the bottom of the vehicle?

It’s not. Priuses have cats with more precious metals and are worth more, plus they are on the bottom of the car (which is not a flaw or anything that toyota needs to answer for) so access is easier than those with them under the hood.

Mainly two issues here. If your car part, car or any other property is stolen, it is not manufacturer's fault. Second thing, if you are keeping your autoinsurance, insurance company should be paying for it. So you should go after insurance company and thief. Work with your legislators to enact law that you have right to protect your properties by hard during your car with electricity or your premise with automatic guns to take care of thieves without getting prosecuted. Unfortunately thieves have more rights in this country.

The same day this article came out and suggested to me by google, my cat was stolen off my prius. Makes me think they might have read same article, it may be raising awareness to a serious problem but may infact be doing more harm than good. Invitation for desperate thieves...

After being woken by a theif in the middle of taking one from a neighbor, the next morning I was able to get a metal plate installed for around $300 to prevent this exact theft from happening. Until Toyota gets their act together, PROTECT YOUR CAR... ask your car guys if they are doing this. If not, find one that is.

I got mine stolen last night even though it had some type of "protection" the rebar didn't do much, I also had a car alarm. I was just getting stable and putting some money into savings, this is a big financial set back for me.

I bought a 69 plate Prius plus excel from cargiant on 02/10/20 and when I started the engine on the morning of 14/10 the engine roared like a moped. I didn't realise what the fault was until I saw all those videos on YouTube. I jacked it up this morning and it confirmed the obvious. They've made a clean cut like an experienced surgeon. The car was parked in a residential parking lot near a very busy road in south London. I didn't know anything about cat converter theft until this happened to me. There was no mention of such from the car dealer(cargiant ) at no time. This is really sad. I just resigned from my retail job to be an Uber or whatever driver and now this

DON'T EVER LOSE A CAT IN CALIFORNIA !!

You can't buy or install aftermarket parts and the dealer prices run into thousands. My 2002 Prius had a cat stolen and the dealer estimate was $2500 which is $900 more than the car's salvage value. So I'm gonna lose my whole functional sentimental-value original Prius for petty theft !! At least in the other states you can install an aftermarket cat for like $100 plus labor.

Ed Rodrigues (not verified)    December 15, 2020 - 10:34AM

It's not Toyota's fault they're being stolen.
And I doubt they will install any aftermarket plate.
They should come out with a plate of their own to keep customers happy.

We live in San Francisco and catalytic converter thefts are out of control. We have a 2007 Prius and just had our catalytic converter stolen for the 3rd time in 2 years. After the 2nd time we had the security plate installed thinking this would prevent or at least deter the thieves. We were wrong. Even with the security plate on they were able to steal the catalytic converter and in order to do this they did a lot more cutting and damaged the undercarriage and manifold. It's going to cost more to repair than the car is worth. As much as we love the Prius we are going to have to get a different type of car.

We didn't get the plate directly from Toyota. It was purchased and installed by our mechanic. It looks similar to the one mentioned in the article.

I just had my catalytic converter stolen off a 08 Prius. We need to voice our opinion and our frustration to Toyota. It cost me over $2000+ to fix it. This is ridiculous if I knew this was a thing beforehand I would have invested into a other car.

Brian (not verified)    January 8, 2021 - 8:59AM

my 07 prius got stolen. I think toyota Co should have designed so its not so easy to be cut ,they should be responsible for the cost .

Madeleine (not verified)    January 11, 2021 - 3:38PM

I just had mine stolen two nights ago. The cost to repair is only $300 less than what I originally paid for my 2007 Prius. I had no idea this was such a common occurrence. The Toyota dealer near me In MD just reported that this happens at least three times a week lately.

Jay (not verified)    January 15, 2021 - 6:55PM

Sorry, I missed how it is Toyota’s fault that a criminal stole a part off of someone’s car?

Obviously it isn’t the owner’s fault but equally obvious is that it is 100% the fault of the person running around with the sawzall in one hand and your cat in the other.

Why are you trying to protect the criminal and criminalize the innocent? .

Well I believe the car I was driving had it stolen last night from work. I get in it and start and sound like a jet plain taking off. It's a 2002 and it belong to my client who past away last year so it's not in my name yet. I can't afford this and they only took part of it. So I can drive it but scared they will take the rest until I can get it fixed and protect it. I am in low income and I really didn't think this car would be targeted because it damn near 20 years old and looks like it. But I guess because it is, it's why it's valuable. I hope I can get it fix and protected or I won't have a job and will have nothing to do with covid.

dumptoyota (not verified)    February 4, 2021 - 9:25PM

Mine was stolen 2 days ago. Whats more California won't let me use any cat. It has to be through the stealership of Toyota and they quoted me $3400 to repair!! Including labor they say! What it takes 2-3min for a thief it takes them hours apparently to replace. I don't have coverage and the car is only worth $2000 so it's totalled. I have to drive it out of state and sell it in AZ or NV. Good luck trying to find a buyer. One thing is for sure #toyotadoesnthaveyourback and #dumptoyota #neverbuytoyota #ihatetoyota #toyotasucks and I will never buy a Toyota again. You don't have the customer's back specially when you produce the part you have created scarcity in the marketplace and your the sole supplier!!?? give me a fucking break I feel so frustrated and angry right now, and Toyota is just not doing ANYTHING, not saying ANYTHING like WTF!!?? The worst company in the word. You know Prius owners get the Prius exactly to save money and this is the most ridiculous thing to ever happen to me and all of us. #PRIUSGOTOHELL

The catalytic converter was stolen from my 2005 Prius two weeks ago as it sat in my driveway! I bought the car used and with all I had read about the 2nd Gen Prius, I never saw any warning about this problem. My car is now nearly worthless. The Toyota dealer near me can't keep this part in stock because of this ongoing problem. I still can't get over the bull shit that the part MUST BE a TOYOTA part because I live in California. Very disappointed with my purchase of the Toyota Prius.

People are saying you should stop whining and buy the device to keep it safe. What if you had no idea this stealing of a CAT was even a thing? Would have been nice if Toyota would have let us know. We loaned it to our young daughter who does not have a garage and lives in an apartment building. She came out this a.m. to go to work and freaked out texting us that the car sounded really bad. My husband and I drove over...a diff. town and found the cut wires etc. and figured it out. Our insurance agent said its really bad over in Everett. Happens all the time. apartment says they do not have security cameras. I find that difficult to believe. She had it parked by the pools. Had to get it towed quite aways. Fortunately our insurance is paying for all of it. She already hit a pole and has 2000 worth of damage she has to come up with. Ugh.
