Inflation is the ultimate enemy of purchasing power. As with almost everything else, it also affects car prices. Cars are gradually becoming more expensive year by year, thanks to several factors. These include stricter safety and emission requirements, necessitating the integration of more advanced technology and standard features, as well as fluctuations in material prices and development costs.
Compared to 20 years ago, cars have gotten substantially more expensive to purchase. While the average increase is hard to determine as it depends on the different segments, trims, and even regions, some vehicles have jumped in price by as much as 124 percent over the last two decades.
But not all vehicles have become more expensive. Toyota Corolla is the most sold car on the planet, and it comes down to a few reasons. The popular Japanese model is in its 12th generation and still going strong. In 2025, Toyota sold 248,088 Corollas in the US, alone. This does not include derivative models like the Corolla Cross. Toyota surpasses its main rivals - the Honda Civic (238,661 sales in 2025) and Hyundai Elantra (137,811 in 2025), while also enjoying a steadier trend in sales figures, year by year.
Even more impressive is the fact that the Corolla is one of the very few modern-day vehicles that has become more affordable to own. For the 2026 model year, prices start at $22,950 for the LE sedan trim. Back in 2005, the base Corolla CE would have set you back $14,220, which in today’s money is $23,599.55.
How Toyota is making the Corolla more affordable despite modern requirements.

At the core of the Corolla’s success lie two main reasons. The first one has to do with Toyota’s Production System (TPC), which utilizes “lean manufacturing” principles in order to make the process as efficient as possible. The process involves a highly automated assembly line, stretching 1.0 km (0.62 miles), that allows a complete vehicle to emerge from the line approximately every 88 seconds.
The second key reason is the Corolla’s reputation for being dependable, made to last, and easy to maintain. The current model combines generous standard equipment and a functional interior for four, making it the ultimate affordable mode of personal transportation. The Corolla is so good that even enthusiasts who are looking for performance switch to it, after experiencing headaches with their “fun” cars.
Despite Toyota being among the top five carmakers with the most service recalls in 2025, the brand still has strong positions, with the Corolla serving as the backbone of the company’s success.
Bottom line
When adjusted for inflation, the Toyota Corolla has generally become more affordable over the long term, offering better safety, features, and fuel efficiency at a lower real cost compared to the equivalent model from over 20 years ago. Toyota’s constant revisions to an already-efficient production process make this possible. However, nominal sticker prices have risen, with 2025 models costing significantly more than early, base-model, or smaller, discontinued alternatives.
The trend continues, albeit at a slow pace. For 2026, the Corolla is $600 more expensive than the 2025 model year, which is a negligible difference. Much of that is due to the model keeping the trim lineup unchanged. Many other carmakers are discontinuing affordable base trims, which raises the starting MSRP, while Toyota is still offering a budget-friendly Corolla that has everything you might ask from a daily commuter.
