Hyundai and Kia have made good headway on the electrification front, and some of their models are already among the bestselling EVs in the US. While the Ioniq 5 is among the most popular fully-electric models currently on the market, its sedan counterpart, the Ioniq 6 is slightly newer on the market and it is still too early to tell if it will mimic the Ioniq 5’s success.

What certainly doesn’t help its case is Hyundai’s latest service recall. While most of the company’s offerings have a good reputation for reliability and offer great value for money, many still knock on the brand’s somewhat variable quality. While the Ioniq 6 features the same powertrain and 800-Volt architecture as its hatchback/SUV sibling, early batches have been recalled due to what initially looks to be a minor issue.

The data was published on 5 February, 2026 by the KBA - Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, and it concerns models manufactured for all markets.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 units produced in the period 29 August 2022 to 3 January  2025 may suffer a defect with the charging port cover. Due to insufficient securing, the flap cover may loosen and shear off completely at higher speeds. While not dangerous to the car and driver themselves, the issue may pose a risk to other drivers, as the piece effectively becomes flying debris.

Approximately 31,670 Hyundai Ioniq 6s were affected by the recall. Hyundai listed the TSB under code 51D295.

Last year, Hyundai issued what has to be one of the most extensive recalls of any carmaker in recent times. A total of 14 models were recalled, including vehicles manufactured as early as 2007. The issue was related to a potential ESP failure and a potential fire hazard. As a 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe owner, I can confirm that the issue was preventively fixed, free of charge, and within an hour of my bringing the car to the dealer.

Service recalls have become the norm these days, and even Toyota is no stranger to those. In fact, in 2025, the Japanese carmaker was in the top five carmakers with the most service recalls. At the very least, service recalls mean that car companies are willing to iron out any imperfections in their vehicles, free of charge, so I wouldn’t count it as something to be frowned upon.

If you have had any experience with service recalls and/or dealing with dealerships, feel free to share your insight in the comment section below.
