Mercedes Launches the New eSprinter All-Electric Van For $72,000 - But the Price Is A Little Deceptive

Mercedes has launched an all-new eSprinter all-electric van for $72,000 - but the price is a little deceptive. Is this van any good?

Mercedes Launches EV Van

Mercedes has launched an eSprinter all-electric van, and it is available for purchase today. This is ahead of Tesla released their EV van sometime in the future. This is a smart move by Mercedes to get ahead of the game in the van space.

The starting variant offers these specs:

  • Starting price: $72k
  • 113kWh battery
  • 273-mile range
  • 75 MPH Top Speed
  • LFP Battery Pack
  • Rear-Wheel Drive

Here is more information:

  • Wheelbase: 170 inches
  • Vehicle Length: 280 inches
  • Cargo Volume: 488.1 cubic feet
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 9,370 lbs.
  • Gross Combination Weight Rating: 11,023 lbs.
  • AC Charging Power/Time: 9.6 kW/12-13 hours
  • DC Charging Power/Time: 115 kW/42 minutes
  • Comes with regenerative braking
  • Electrically adjustable seats with memory function
  • Battery Warranty: 8 years/100,000 miles

I took a look at Mercedes website because the van has a starting price of $72,000. That must mean there are more options to customize the van.

The van comes with a CCS charging port, it looks like - from the pictures of it and is located on the front of the van - to the right of the Mercedes logo. Two chargers were mentioned: AC J1772 and a DC (CCS1) charger.

The charging is a bit of a let-down and should have used NACS, which is a simpler charging standard, than any others available.

Here's what the charge port looks like:

Add-Ons For the eSprinter EV Van

There were a number of add-ons for the EV van, including:

A comfort package with an overhead control panel, lumbar support for the front seats, and head restraints for the front seats. Cost: $307.

A comfort package for seats which offer "comfort" to the front seats. Cost: $426.

A Driver convenience package, which adds a 12 V power outlet, storage add-ons with hinged lids, two more master keys, an attention assists, and electrically folding exterior mirrors. Cost: $449.

An exterior lighting package, offering fog lamp, partial LED tail lights, high beam assist, and LED high performance headlamps. Cost: $1,801.

A comfort steering package, offering a heated front passenger seat, and the front seats being electrically adjustable. Cost: $1,643.

A premium MBUX package, which offers a leather and heated steering wheel, a large touch screen, wet wiper system, navigation package, smartphone integration, front-to-rear outlet in instrument panel, acoustic package, hinged lid for storage, a rearview camera, a digital owner's manual, and a rain sensor. Cost: $2,390.

A navigation charging package, which offers DC charging at 115 kW, navigation on the center screen, intelligent navigation, and map data updates. Cost: $1,429.

Additional upgrades include electrically heated windshield, electrically folding exterior mirrors, a trailer hitch, light-alloy wheels, and electric closing assist for the right sliding door.

Additional warranties can be bought anywhere from $1,150 to $10,200.

Key "Standard Features" Are Touted As:

  • AGM battery 12V 92 AH 850 A
  • Instrument cluster with color display
  • Active Brake Assist
  • Hold Function
  • Multifunction steering wheel
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Standard Radio (FM/AM Radio, LCD-Display, integrated USB-C Port, Bluetooth®)
  • Trailer hitch preparation wiring
  • Preinstallation PSM
  • Body Builder connector under driver seat
  • Heated & electrically adjustable exterior mirrors
  • Rear view camera (rearview mirror display)
  • Heated driver's seat
  • Crosswind Assist
  • Communication Module (LTE) for Connectivity services
  • Cruise control
  • Emergency Call System

The $72,000 initial price is a little deceptive because there are so many add-ons just to get the vehicle like a Tesla, such as upgrading to a larger center screen and upgrading for heated seats.

I also think the top speed of 75 mph could be a problem, especially on freeways with an 80 to 85 mph speed limit.

The fact that it has an LFP battery is good and will make it easy for first time buyers to understand by being able to charge to 100% regularly.

Mercedes did a good job going first here, however, the van is underwhelming. Tesla should have no problem releasing a robo van that beats this in every area: price, performance, range, features, functionality, and more.
