Massive Toyota Lawsuit Includes RAV4 and 9 Other Models, “Toyota Has Long Been Aware of the Door-Lock Defect But Has Routinely Refused to Repair the Issue”

A new lawsuit against Toyota alleges defective door locks on ten popular models that the automaker refuses to fix. The lawsuit could affect hundreds of thousands of Toyota vehicles over 17 years. See if your model is on the list.

A Toyota class action lawsuit could potentially impact your vehicle.

A new Toyota class-action lawsuit has been filed claiming that the 2007 to 2024 model year Toyota RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, and FJ Cruiser have defective door-locks.

The scale of this lawsuit is significant, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

A report from TopClassActions says, “The consumers claim Toyota sold certain vehicles ranging from model year 2007 to the present that were equipped with a door-lock defect. The class action lawsuit was filed in Texas federal court on November 15, 2024.”

The report says that the Toyota defective door lock lawsuit alleges that Toyota breached its manufacturer warranties by selling ten of its vehicles with a door-lock defect.

Ten Toyota vehicles are included.

A group of Toyota owners claims Toyota sold certain RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, and FJ Cruiser vehicles broadly stemming from the model year 2007 to the present that were equipped with defective door lock actuators.

TopClassActions says, “The consumers argue the alleged Toyota defect prevents the vehicle doors from being locked or unlocked with a remote key fob or the power door locks on the interior door panels, creating a safety hazard.”

The Toyota defective door lock lawsuit highlights the potential safety risks, including unintentional door openings and inoperable doors during emergencies, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

“This jeopardizes the safety of vehicle occupants by causing unintentional door openings during operation, unknown failures to lock the doors, inoperable doors during emergency situations, more vulnerable to potential crime and other risks that could have otherwise been avoided,” the Toyota class action says.

The Toyota owners want to represent a nationwide class and classes of Texas, New York, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, and Georgia customers who are current or former owners and lessees of a Toyota vehicle containing the door-lock Toyota defect.

The lawsuit alleges Toyota knew about the defect and did nothing to fix it.

The customers argue Toyota has “long been aware” of the alleged door-lock defect but has “routinely refused” to repair the issue without charge and has refused to take any action when the problem manifests in vehicles outside their warranty period.

Seventeen years of vehicle model production are included.

“Because the Door Actuator Defect typically manifests shortly outside of the warranty period for the Class Vehicles—and given Toyota’s knowledge of this concealed, safety-related defect, unequal bargaining power, and other factors discussed below—Toyota’s attempt to limit the warranty with respect to the Door Actuator Defect is unconscionable,” the Toyota defect class action says.

The lawsuit claims Toyota is guilty of “unjust enrichment and fraudulent concealment” and violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and multiple state consumer protection laws.

The plaintiffs seek a jury trial and request “declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, punitive and consequential damages for themselves and all class members.”

As of this writing, Toyota has not issued a recall for the alleged door lock defect on the Toyota RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, and FJ Cruiser.

Toyota did recall the 2023–2024 Prius hybrids and Prius Prime plug-in hybrids in April because water can short-circuit the rear electronic door latches. The automaker advised that if the doors are not locked, they can open while the vehicle is traveling or in a collision, risking injury, or worse, to passengers.

I bought this Rav 4 after market from Carmax, when it was still under warranty. I was the 2nd owner. I have a 2019 Rav 4 and just now after almost two years have issues with the door locks. This is my only vehicle and I cannot afford to replace the part needed. Hopefully they will act on this.

I bought a 2024 Toyota Rav 4. It has done some “funny” things since I have owned it. How would I know if the locking system has failed without it being broken into or something? I don’t want to have something tragic to happen to find out! Thanks!

We own a 2013 Toyota Venza. We have had to replace 3 door lock actuators. Maybe Venza need to added to the list. I have proof!

My door will lock itself when I come up to the car with the key. I have to wait almost a minute for it to unlock itself. Can be dangerous and very inconvenient if it is raining

I am the owner of a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The right back passenger door lock has been malfunctioning for at least a year now. It only opens from the outside. If there's a class action lawsuit, I'd like to be part of it. Thanks

Haven't had my Corolla for even a year and I would notice that I would lock my car at night, I make a trip downstairs every night to make sure my car is locked... I wake up in the morning for work and having morning brain I don't unlock my car with my fob because you know, I'm just not thinking. but my door just so happens to open sometimes... Not all the time but now seeing this article it brought it all back...

We have a 2019 Rav4 with nonissues... yet! This is terrifying to learn about and we will absolutely be keeping an eye out for any news on this story.

A few times after my 2016 Corolla LE warranty ran out I started having cases where my wife would stay in the car and lock the doors while I ran into the store and could not unlock the doors with the manual door lock. She had to grab the key to unlock it.

Other times I get out to get the mail with the car still running, when I come back the driver door is locked and all others are unlocked.

I purchased a 2021 new and I had a 2017 and sold it. I had the same problem with both with water getting in the door and sitting there. I just washed my 2021 today and had to dry the inside out.

I have a 2002 Tacoma that locks me in quite often. For some reason it will lock me in almost every time I pull up to my house. Sometimes I have to pull up on knob to get out.

None of the doors on Our 2018 4Runner work with the remote. Each door has to be locked manually. The driver’s door has to be unlocked with the key which presents a safety issue. When we get in the car we have to reach to lock each door. Toyota needs to fix this problem before something seriously happens.

I had previously owned a 2012 Toyota Camry and my door locks kept malfunctioning at first I thought it was the fob . Then both fobs wouldn’t unlock it , one lock then both locks then all four malfunctioned. I had to manually unlock the doors and mess with them constantly. I was told it was the Actuator, but there was no recall . Then my friend had trouble with her Toyota Camry as well with the actuators so I figured there would be a recall. I really had wished Toyota had looked into this further.

I have a 2013 4Runner which had a problem off and on locking the driver and passenger doors when I hit the lock button. Sometimes the passenger door doesn’t l, and I have to hit the lock button on my key fob.

Yes. I just recently purchased a 2010 Toyota Highlander. I am hearing clicking noises inside the doors at times when I am driving it. Also, the doors will lock and unlock on their own. Lastly, the window lock button doesn't work correctly.

I have a 2015 Highlander limited Toyota and I paid over 1300.00 to get my 2 front door locks fixed and the parts were on back order for over 9 months. Very disappointed

I purchased my 2020 RAV4 new at Kari Toyota in 2020. I am currently a resident of MN. Of course it is now out of warranty. The door locking/unlocking mechanism failed 1 month ago. It affects both front doors & the rear cargo door.
Am I protected by the class suit?

I own a low mileage 2015 Rav4. I am unable to lock & unlock the car with the remote fob. I thought my age, 76 years, was the reason because I could not apply the required pressure. When I complained, the batteries were replaced

I have a Rav 4 Hybrid and had locked my keys in the car and was unable to unlock while the car was running. My dog was in there, but what if it had been a baby…
