For those buyers who need a crossover but don’t want to say goodbye to sporty fun, Toyota has a plug-in RAV4 GR Sport for you. For those prioritizing fuel efficiency and highway comfort, the RAV4 Hybrid Limited will be a better fit.

On The Road With The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited

This version of the RAV4 is the top-trim for the hybrid RAV4. The powertrain setup works like this - Toyota mates a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission to power the front wheels and charge the lithium-ion battery. Meanwhile, a dedicated rear electric motor powers the rear wheels on all-wheel-drive models like my tester.

The total system horsepower is 236. Acceleration is adequate but not particularly quick. It's good enough for most around-town situations.

Unfortunately, this version of the RAV4 isn’t nearly as fun to drive as the GR Sport, though the percentage of RAV4 buyers who care is probably not so much a Venn diagram as it is a circle. In other words, if you really care about sporty driving and you’re shopping RAVs, you’ll go for the GR if you can afford it.

The good news is that while this version of the RAV isn’t GR-tuned, that doesn’t mean its road manners are bad. Handling may be sort of middle-of-the-road (metaphorically, not literally) but the ride is nice and smooth. I had a long highway slog of 60-ish miles, plus the return trip, and the RAV was plenty comfortable for such a drive.

I didn’t measure exact fuel economy, but the EPA gives this version of the RAV4 an eye-popping range of 594 miles and fuel-economy numbers of 43 mpg city/37 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. Those are numbers that will catch the eye of those who have long commutes or take fairly frequent road trips.

The cabin is comfortable, with head- and legroom that is more than adequate, and most outside noise is kept where it belongs. Only the new flipper shifter that’s popping up on newer Lexus and Toyota models feels out of place - it might save space, but it’s a tad tricky to use in parking-lot maneuvering. This may be an automotive-journalist problem - it seems like something owners would get used to.

There was one more minor disappointment with the interior - while most materials feel appropriate for the price, there are some bits and pieces that feel a tad downmarket, including some hard plastic. I did appreciate the heavy use of traditional buttons as opposed to Toyota leaning too far into touchscreens and haptic touch. As I say just about every time I review a Toyota or Lexus of recent vintage, I find the updated infotainment system to be much better than what it replaced. The steering-wheel buttons on the RAV are especially useful.

The overall package shows why the RAV4 remains so popular. It’s not just the brand’s reputation for reliability. The RAV4 is so well put together that it does just about everything we expected out of a mid-size, five-seat crossover and does it well.

Creating a crossover that does (almost) everything well is easier said than done, yet Toyota has done it here yet again.
