2025 Toyota Tacoma Owner Says, “I Would Rather Push-Mow a Hill In 105 Degree Heat with 2 Broken Legs, Than to Ever Install Seat Covers Again”

A Toyota Tacoma owner just put new seat covers on a brand-new 2025 Tacoma pickup. The installation was a nightmare, and now she's unsure if they look good. Check out the before and after pictures. What do you think? Should she leave them on?

Imagine buying a new 2025 Toyota Tacoma pickup, and you dislike the factory seats so much that you have to install seat covers. More likely, she just wants to protect her new seats.

Jill Todd, who recently purchased a 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport pickup, decided to put aftermarket seat covers on her new pickup. It turned out to be a nightmare.

She says in a Toyota Tacoma Owners Facebook post,

"I would rather push mow a hill on a 105-degree day with two broken legs than EVER install seat covers in my new Toyota Tacoma by myself again."

Jill is a first-time Toyota Tacoma and first-time truck owner.

She says, "Last weekend, I made the practical decision to trade my 2023 4Runner in on a 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport. My 4Runner was beautiful but useless for my daily needs. I need a truck bed and the ability to pull a small camper."

"After looking at several models, test driving, comparing, etc., I finally narrowed it down to the one I wanted."

Now, she has a new Tacoma and wants to install seat covers.

She doesn't say why she installed the seat covers, but most people want to protect their original seats. She shows before and after pictures (below) of the 2025 Tacoma she installed with fabric seats. She likely wanted the leather seat look.

After extensive research and comparison, she chose the ERK Cover seat covers for their quality, price, and the leather-like appearance she desired.

So, she ordered the Coverdream fit Custom Leather seat covers online. The cost of the seat covers for her Tacoma was only $155.99 on sale (regular price is $359.99), and that is a complete set that includes front and rear seat covers, headrest covers, a manual tutorial (video tutorial), and installation tools.

ERK says, "These seat covers are made of high-quality leather-like material, designed to provide a snug fit and enhance the interior of the Tacoma."

That's an excellent price for a complete set of seat covers.

Imagine your new seat covers arriving by UPS and then spending a Saturday installing your new Tacoma seat covers.

The ERK Cover website says, "Our seat covers come with a 2-year after-sales service and are designed for DIY installation. While some effort may be required to achieve a snug fit, the included video tutorial and installation tools make the process straightforward."

However, it's never as easy as they say.

Jill has to work hard at installing them. It was more complicated than she thought.

She says, "My directions said I could leave the factory ones on, but I did consider removing them because it was such a difficult and tight fit."

It's a good thing she didn't remove the original factory seat covers because then she would have had real problems.

Jill says. "The hardest part was how tight the space is between the back of the seat and the seat itself."

"I think having smaller hands than a man may have been to my advantage, but at one point, I was sitting on my knees facing the back of the seat, trying to use my entire body weight to create more space."

Now Jill wants feedback on her ERK seat cover installation.

"Now that they are on, I'm not sure I even chose the best look. So someone, please tell me that they look good because it was a labor of love that required a great deal of acrobatic moves to complete, and I do not want to change them now," she says, a hint of relief in her voice.

Here are the before and after pics for comparison, she says.

She says, "I chose these in hopes it would 'elevate' the interior."

She gets the feedback she wanted.

Danny Guebara - They don't look bad. It seems like something that should be in a high-end model. But I don't think you made a bad choice.

Marc Auster - They look good. If it makes you feel any better, mine took me FOREVER to put on. In fact, at one point, I almost gave up. I even invented a few new curse words, according to my wife. All of my cars have or had leather interiors. These are not leather, but I like the way they look compared to the material seats. And my material seats always showed some dirt. These don't show much dirt and are super easy to clean, and they do look nice. You'll like how easy they are to keep clean.

What Do You Think?

Should Jill leave them on or take them off? Did she accomplish her mission of "elevating the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport interior?

"It's the first upgrade that I've made to my 2025 TRD Sport. I already like how easily they clean up, and they are super comfortable, too," she concludes.

Next, Jill is going to install a brake controller so she can pull a small camper.

"But now I realize my TRD Sport doesn't come with the brake controller. I feel so silly that I didn't notice that and just assumed that it was included."

"The Toyota dealership doesn't have a part number, and the 1-800 number was answered by a useless human who had zero answers or advice."

"The manual warns against anything aftermarket, but I need a brake controller."

In The End

Hopefully, Jill will have a new brake controller installed on her 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport by the Toyota dealer and not try to make it a DIY project.

You should never add seat covers it could interfere with the airbags. And aftermarket is always a no no.

As far as buying a trailer goes. Just be sure you buy some thing that your truck is capable of hauling. Check the gross weight that your truck can haul.
You always want to buy something that is way less weight than what your truck can handle. You have to consider anything you may hauling inside the trailer weight wise.
If you don't it will cause you no amount of grief later.

Just get KATSKINZ leather seat covers done by professional. Yes they are expensive but they look fantastic. Once they put on and they’re really not a seat cover they are basically new leather seats.

Jill, the new seat covers that you installed are great looking.I like them much better than the original seat covers.

Hi. Yes I installed seat covers for my 2024 Tacoma. I bought them from Amazon. They were a bit hard to put on but it was worth it. My original seats are fine but I want to protect them because they are cloth. I would do it again if I need to

OMG after reading this I had to share I had bought seat covers for my truck but a year ago I just let them sit in my garage and decided to put them on today. They are not easy at all to put on. I spent almost $400 from seat covers unlimited. They are very tough to get a tight fit. I installed the bottom driver side piece first and again that was a nightmare. Took about an hour. Then I went to install the other half and notice that seat covers unlimited missed 4 inches worth of stitching in the top left hand corner. After taking about an hour to install the first piece I was out of my mind upset and just stopped the process and emailed seat covers unlimited to tell them how extremely upset I was and that I am just going to pay someone to fix the stitching that they messed up. So I agree seat covers are a pain in the neck....!

Jill. Get a life and get your needed attention elsewhere ..you do not need feedback for everything you do

The covers look good. I have an older Tacoma. I used a Hoppy's brake controller for towing my camper. I would recommend buying the electrical pigtails so it is a direct plug and play thing without splicing any wires.

Mark (not verified)    July 14, 2025 - 9:23AM

I took my seats out to do mine. It was a longer process but t hey came out great. Yours look good. There a b word to do but now that it's done enjoy them

I too purchased leather like seat covers for my new 2025 Tacoma TRD offroad. The seat cover material that came on the truck appeared cheap in my opinion. I agree that the seat covers were very hard to get on. However, I feel that the improved appearance was worth the skinned knuckles.

This story is past believable. A reasonably priced set of seat covers that fine.
She knew what she was buying.
Why is she surprised that her Tacoma doesn't have a brake controller. Forget the dealer: get a professional trailer dealer to install the correct unit that she needs. No problem with warranty either.
I have a 4 Runner and a 2017 Tacoma TRD. Both are great.
The "new" Tacomas and 4 Runners are garbage!

The seat covers look like you got them on well and are so much better than what you had. To me the price would have been a warning. For what you got that's awfully cheap so I hope the material holds up so you don't need to do it again. I am suprised the instructions did not recommend removing the seats to do this, quicker and easier in the long run. As for the break controller going OEM is a very wise choice with the proper plug in connectors. Cheap wiring connectors that get wet and short out will never be worth any money you saved espeshly when the camper lights/breaks fail at night in the rain.

I’m a lease owner of a 2023 Tacoma. I’ve been a fan of the truck for ever! I did however have a problem with tires. I had a wobble on the left front tire at first and motives a substantial bulge on the outside. I had the tire replaced at Walmart. About 2 months later the wobble returned slowly at first and worse after a week. The noise was terrible. I inspected all the tires and found there to be multiple bulges on the three tires I had not replaced. I immediately went and had them replaced at Walmart unsure if I should drive the 45 miles to the Toyota dealership. I did call them and went there with my bad tires after I had new tires

The company that made the tires was notified earlier and they explained that a dealer of their tires had to assist me in filing a claim. The process did not work after visiting a local dealer and Walmart. So i took the tires to the service department at the dealership to help me file a claim. I left the tires with them so they could give them back to the tire distribution center.

I waited and waited. Emailing the receipt for the tires and waiting for reimbursement if determined faulty which us both determined they were. Unfortunate the Toyota dealership had placed the tires for inspection in the same area they place used tires for pickup by a contract agent. They picked up their tires and mine by mistake.

The service department said that the company that picked them up would reimburse me for the tires but never responded and it been over 9 months.

Just who is responsible for my bad tires could not be determined because the tires were destroyed, but I’m still out the costs of replacing a set of tires with only 11000 miles on them. Tell me who is going to pay the bill of can a claim the costs when I turn in the vehicle in two years?

The new covers look nice. For the controller, I would find a reputable trailer business that installs controllers. Dealers will charge you those two broken legs and arms as well. Many (not all) businesses that sell trailers have intimate knowledge of truck trailering systems. I'd check with them to make sure they've installed at least a couple of these in your year/model before.

I installed new " Neoprene seat covers on my 2016 Tacoma access cab as soon as I purchased the truck brand new from the dealership. I purchased them through the dealership. They were a tight fit and took me a couple of hours to install them. I was very happy with them ! I had the truck for 10 years and the seats looked brand new when I looked at the seats after removing the drivers bottom seat cover to seat what they looked like ! I would definitely by these seat covers again if they were available.

Sorry they didn't work for you , I didn't buy mine on line cause a lot of times you don't get what you pay for . And the choices of fabric is a big issue for me .I live in Texas , I definitely would not get leather for my Tacoma. Fabric is the way to go . I have seat covers on my seat to keep them clean , since at any given day I will have 1 or 2 of my grandchildren with me. They are still small. I bought mine at Walmart and yes they can be a challenge to put on but well worth it . Hope this helps

Valerie Manns (not verified)    July 14, 2025 - 12:08PM

They look much better than the factory one, in my opinion. You did a much better job putting them on than I did, and I would have given up halfway through because they can be a little difficult.

Dani (not verified)    July 14, 2025 - 12:42PM

Sounds like spoiled rich people problems. For one, the 4 runner likely has the same towing capacity for a camper, and who totes a camper for their daily needs.. what a practical trade.. and the nationwide complaint is some random lady has issues following seat cover installations.. gtfo.

Dont take them off imagine having kids and they make a mess you will regret it later taking it off
Leave them on it matches and looks good with your white color truck

Louise Mowder (not verified)    July 14, 2025 - 1:12PM

Your new covers will never look like the originals. However they don't have to. They look perfectly fine, they protect the leather seats, and they are hopefully comfortable. Remember that after 6 months of driving, they will have been broken in and look as if they came with the truck.

The main thing is that they will have protected the originals from spills, crumbs, and other mishaps. You can rest ( or sit) easy.

Shane Bledsoe (not verified)    July 14, 2025 - 1:28PM

I have found, through experience, some seat covers end up with that puffy look. And sometimes want to shift, or slide. So now, anytime I use seat covers, I put strips of two sided tape on the original seat, then after installing the co eats , I just press them firmly against the strips of tape. After you sit in them a couple times, the covers fit like a glove against the originals. Following every hump, or contour perfectly.
