Imagine buying a new 2025 Toyota Tacoma pickup, and you dislike the factory seats so much that you have to install seat covers. More likely, she just wants to protect her new seats.
Jill Todd, who recently purchased a 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport pickup, decided to put aftermarket seat covers on her new pickup. It turned out to be a nightmare.
She says in a Toyota Tacoma Owners Facebook post,
"I would rather push mow a hill on a 105-degree day with two broken legs than EVER install seat covers in my new Toyota Tacoma by myself again."
Jill is a first-time Toyota Tacoma and first-time truck owner.
She says, "Last weekend, I made the practical decision to trade my 2023 4Runner in on a 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport. My 4Runner was beautiful but useless for my daily needs. I need a truck bed and the ability to pull a small camper."
"After looking at several models, test driving, comparing, etc., I finally narrowed it down to the one I wanted."
Now, she has a new Tacoma and wants to install seat covers.
She doesn't say why she installed the seat covers, but most people want to protect their original seats. She shows before and after pictures (below) of the 2025 Tacoma she installed with fabric seats. She likely wanted the leather seat look.
After extensive research and comparison, she chose the ERK Cover seat covers for their quality, price, and the leather-like appearance she desired.
So, she ordered the Coverdream fit Custom Leather seat covers online. The cost of the seat covers for her Tacoma was only $155.99 on sale (regular price is $359.99), and that is a complete set that includes front and rear seat covers, headrest covers, a manual tutorial (video tutorial), and installation tools.
ERK says, "These seat covers are made of high-quality leather-like material, designed to provide a snug fit and enhance the interior of the Tacoma."
That's an excellent price for a complete set of seat covers.
Imagine your new seat covers arriving by UPS and then spending a Saturday installing your new Tacoma seat covers.
The ERK Cover website says, "Our seat covers come with a 2-year after-sales service and are designed for DIY installation. While some effort may be required to achieve a snug fit, the included video tutorial and installation tools make the process straightforward."
However, it's never as easy as they say.
Jill has to work hard at installing them. It was more complicated than she thought.
She says, "My directions said I could leave the factory ones on, but I did consider removing them because it was such a difficult and tight fit."
It's a good thing she didn't remove the original factory seat covers because then she would have had real problems.
Jill says. "The hardest part was how tight the space is between the back of the seat and the seat itself."
"I think having smaller hands than a man may have been to my advantage, but at one point, I was sitting on my knees facing the back of the seat, trying to use my entire body weight to create more space."
Now Jill wants feedback on her ERK seat cover installation.
"Now that they are on, I'm not sure I even chose the best look. So someone, please tell me that they look good because it was a labor of love that required a great deal of acrobatic moves to complete, and I do not want to change them now," she says, a hint of relief in her voice.
Here are the before and after pics for comparison, she says.
Before she installed seat covers
Jill's new seat covers
She says, "I chose these in hopes it would 'elevate' the interior."
She gets the feedback she wanted.
Danny Guebara - They don't look bad. It seems like something that should be in a high-end model. But I don't think you made a bad choice.
Marc Auster - They look good. If it makes you feel any better, mine took me FOREVER to put on. In fact, at one point, I almost gave up. I even invented a few new curse words, according to my wife. All of my cars have or had leather interiors. These are not leather, but I like the way they look compared to the material seats. And my material seats always showed some dirt. These don't show much dirt and are super easy to clean, and they do look nice. You'll like how easy they are to keep clean.
What Do You Think?
Should Jill leave them on or take them off? Did she accomplish her mission of "elevating the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport interior?
"It's the first upgrade that I've made to my 2025 TRD Sport. I already like how easily they clean up, and they are super comfortable, too," she concludes.
Next, Jill is going to install a brake controller so she can pull a small camper.
"But now I realize my TRD Sport doesn't come with the brake controller. I feel so silly that I didn't notice that and just assumed that it was included."
"The Toyota dealership doesn't have a part number, and the 1-800 number was answered by a useless human who had zero answers or advice."
"The manual warns against anything aftermarket, but I need a brake controller."
In The End
Hopefully, Jill will have a new brake controller installed on her 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport by the Toyota dealer and not try to make it a DIY project.

The factory seats look good but the seat covers you chose look great. With your Tacoma being a TRD model I'm sure that the TRD Badge itself has red in it thus bringing out the red stitching/piping in your new seat covers. I think you made a wise and beautiful choice.

Hi I understand your pain, I installed the same seat covers on my 2024 toyota tacoma sr5 double cab.
The back seat was easy but the front was very difficult especially the bottom seat cushion i had bruises on both of my hands and still never got a good fit, very disappointing I paid the full price no discount

Yes, they look much better... I just hope you can tow a trailer with it. I find the Tacoma to be underpowered and not as stable.
Fuel economy will also suffer when towing big time.

The manual warns against adding anything aftermarket? The manual can shove it. If I had one it would have been tuned day 1. I mod everything. I bought it, it’s mine, they can warn all they want, but they can’t stop me. And thankfully the Magnusson Moss Act says they can’t even void my warranty. Screw you Toyota.

I personnaly like the look of the factory seats a little better, but thats just me. I also own a tacoma i purchased in 2018 and i also went immediately and purchased some cheap seat covers. I dont understand why toyota thinks we need cloth seats in a truck. It really doesnt make sense. I still have my seats covered. Thanks toyota for making people pay thousands more for a 4wd model before we can get leather seats. I had rather have vinyl than cloth or leather. Toyota is forcing me to look at their competition.

I put Clazzio black and grey leather covers in my 2009 TRD sport Tacoma. I couldn't stand the light grey seats, they were always dirty and covered in dog hair. Hard work but worth it! And as far as a trailer brake controller get a curt Bluetooth controller. You just plug it in to the 7 way and then plug the camper plug into it. Then you use the app to control the brakes. It remembers your settings and automatically applies the brakes when it senses you stopping (picks up brake light signal I believe) it works great and you don't have to clutter up the interior with a box hanging from the bottom of the dash.

I get that she needed a bed, that the bed was more practical due her, at a truck was needed, but you what state that she needed the truck because she will tow a small camper. Her "old" 2023 4Runner could easily pull a small camper. That was definitely not a reason that makes sense to get rid of a v6 4Runner to get a 4-cylinder , with a turbo, pickup. Then there's the seats. They look good. She's like she wants to complain. She might be complaining more with the 4 cylinder taco.

You know I don't know how much you pay for that but just ask the dealer who they're aftermarket leather guy is and get a quote and go get the seats done with aftermarket leather it looks good it fits right The only place that's leather is the seed surface which is true of any leather seat but at least it looks like it came with the truck when they do it That looks like something she bought from temu honestly

Our vinyl repair company installs seat covers and im the one that does all of them. Im pretty good at this point but some of them are designed to make your life a nightmare. We take the old seat covers off, reinstall the airbags inside the seat and at times have to swap over the metal frames with all of the wiring harnesses that go in and out of the seat. Sometimes if you place a wire over instead of under something then it can snap under pressure when the seat is laid back. Once the cushion is off its just jagged metal that cuts you so sharp you dont even feel it until you look down and see blood. Its gnarly but I enjoy it for whatever reason

First off, I would have left the brand-new covers that came with the truck for at least 2, maybe 3 years. Nothing was wrong with them.
Now I would have taken them to a person who has all the specialized equipment to remove and install the new leather seat covers.
The Outside of the Truck looks GOOD!
Lesson Learned and it looks like YOU did a fabulous job!

I put the ERK covers on seats of my '23 Tacoma crew cab. They look good and protect factory seats. But they were a pain to do. Even with the instructions and Youtube. Mostly the fronts. I ended up taking front seats out of the truck to make it easier and get a better fitment.

I think Jill should not look for sympathy and encouragement from the internet just because she had to do a day of hard work. Nobody cares she installed seat covers herself, it's not a big accomplishment of some sort. Women need an award for everything.

From what I get from this article is that it had factory seat covers over the seats already and she installed the new ones without removing the factory ones. Seat covers are hard enough to stretch over a seat on it's own, let alone putting it over another seat cover. The factory one should have been removed and it would have helped give it a bit more wiggle room.
But, the red stitching compliments the red trim in the center console, and even though there are 2 sets of covers on the seats, it looks like it turned out really good. Things don't always come easy when you are not a professional, so take pride in a job you can complete yourself, even if it takes you longer and more effort, because in the long run, you accomplished it. Stand back admire your finished project!

I don't have a Tacoma, i have a ram 2500 that came with vented (both heat and cooling) seats that were leather. Living in socal, leather not a great idea. I actually ordered seat covers from shear comfort that were notade till I placed the order and were designed around my specific seat design. Example bucket, the seat split type, if were vented, and so on, best purchase ever and yes I had to remove parts of my seat to install, but so very much effort and time.

They look ok. A little crooked in the back. I always had better luck letting them heat up in the sun so they stretch before putting them on. Maybe keave the truck in the sun with doors open and try to re-adjust the back.
Sometimes things go on sale because theres a defect. In this case possibly the measurements? They look fine, run them and if you decide to sell the truck, remove them and the money you get for the truck will be higher.

Did the same but used Clazzio and it turned out great. Installing it was a major pain but removing the front seats made it much easier for me. Allowing the covers to sit in the sun to loosen up made it much easier also. As far as your new look, I actually like the color combination of your original seats which could be due to the wrinkles in the new seat covers.

I’ve always had leather in my trucks, my latest Nissan Titan has heated fabric seats. I contemplated adding leather, time constraints prevented that from happening. After two years I am happy I stayed with the heavy duty fabric seats, cooler summers and warmer winters.
I personally liked your fabric color combo but if you wanted a different look then good for you, the look you wanted.

I put heated seats in my 20 4Runner. It required taking the seats out, separating the seat back from the base, and un-binding them from the cushion rails. After installation I had to use hog ring pliers to reassemble. It was a lot of fiddling around to get it all back together but now I have heated seats.
If i were to replace the factory covers, I would use the same technique. Yes it's a lot of work, but unless you bind them down they are going to move about and that would drive me crazy.

I liked the sporty look of the original seats. But understand why she wants seat covers to protect the upholstery.
Strongly suggest you have the controller installed by a professional shop. Consider a RV dealership where they sell RV travel trailers. That's a significant safety feature you don't want to have a mishap when pulling.
