2025 Toyota Tacoma Owner Says, “I Would Rather Push-Mow a Hill In 105 Degree Heat with 2 Broken Legs, Than to Ever Install Seat Covers Again”

A Toyota Tacoma owner just put new seat covers on a brand-new 2025 Tacoma pickup. The installation was a nightmare, and now she's unsure if they look good. Check out the before and after pictures. What do you think? Should she leave them on?

Imagine buying a new 2025 Toyota Tacoma pickup, and you dislike the factory seats so much that you have to install seat covers. More likely, she just wants to protect her new seats.

Jill Todd, who recently purchased a 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport pickup, decided to put aftermarket seat covers on her new pickup. It turned out to be a nightmare.

She says in a Toyota Tacoma Owners Facebook post,

"I would rather push mow a hill on a 105-degree day with two broken legs than EVER install seat covers in my new Toyota Tacoma by myself again."

Jill is a first-time Toyota Tacoma and first-time truck owner.

She says, "Last weekend, I made the practical decision to trade my 2023 4Runner in on a 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport. My 4Runner was beautiful but useless for my daily needs. I need a truck bed and the ability to pull a small camper."

"After looking at several models, test driving, comparing, etc., I finally narrowed it down to the one I wanted."

Now, she has a new Tacoma and wants to install seat covers.

She doesn't say why she installed the seat covers, but most people want to protect their original seats. She shows before and after pictures (below) of the 2025 Tacoma she installed with fabric seats. She likely wanted the leather seat look.

After extensive research and comparison, she chose the ERK Cover seat covers for their quality, price, and the leather-like appearance she desired.

So, she ordered the Coverdream fit Custom Leather seat covers online. The cost of the seat covers for her Tacoma was only $155.99 on sale (regular price is $359.99), and that is a complete set that includes front and rear seat covers, headrest covers, a manual tutorial (video tutorial), and installation tools.

ERK says, "These seat covers are made of high-quality leather-like material, designed to provide a snug fit and enhance the interior of the Tacoma."

That's an excellent price for a complete set of seat covers.

Imagine your new seat covers arriving by UPS and then spending a Saturday installing your new Tacoma seat covers.

The ERK Cover website says, "Our seat covers come with a 2-year after-sales service and are designed for DIY installation. While some effort may be required to achieve a snug fit, the included video tutorial and installation tools make the process straightforward."

However, it's never as easy as they say.

Jill has to work hard at installing them. It was more complicated than she thought.

She says, "My directions said I could leave the factory ones on, but I did consider removing them because it was such a difficult and tight fit."

It's a good thing she didn't remove the original factory seat covers because then she would have had real problems.

Jill says. "The hardest part was how tight the space is between the back of the seat and the seat itself."

"I think having smaller hands than a man may have been to my advantage, but at one point, I was sitting on my knees facing the back of the seat, trying to use my entire body weight to create more space."

Now Jill wants feedback on her ERK seat cover installation.

"Now that they are on, I'm not sure I even chose the best look. So someone, please tell me that they look good because it was a labor of love that required a great deal of acrobatic moves to complete, and I do not want to change them now," she says, a hint of relief in her voice.

Here are the before and after pics for comparison, she says.

She says, "I chose these in hopes it would 'elevate' the interior."

She gets the feedback she wanted.

Danny Guebara - They don't look bad. It seems like something that should be in a high-end model. But I don't think you made a bad choice.

Marc Auster - They look good. If it makes you feel any better, mine took me FOREVER to put on. In fact, at one point, I almost gave up. I even invented a few new curse words, according to my wife. All of my cars have or had leather interiors. These are not leather, but I like the way they look compared to the material seats. And my material seats always showed some dirt. These don't show much dirt and are super easy to clean, and they do look nice. You'll like how easy they are to keep clean.

What Do You Think?

Should Jill leave them on or take them off? Did she accomplish her mission of "elevating the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport interior?

"It's the first upgrade that I've made to my 2025 TRD Sport. I already like how easily they clean up, and they are super comfortable, too," she concludes.

Next, Jill is going to install a brake controller so she can pull a small camper.

"But now I realize my TRD Sport doesn't come with the brake controller. I feel so silly that I didn't notice that and just assumed that it was included."

"The Toyota dealership doesn't have a part number, and the 1-800 number was answered by a useless human who had zero answers or advice."

"The manual warns against anything aftermarket, but I need a brake controller."

In The End

Hopefully, Jill will have a new brake controller installed on her 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport by the Toyota dealer and not try to make it a DIY project.

Are you serious? Seat covers is what you choose to complain about? You probably could have had real leather seat covers installed at the dealership by a professional. If you can afford the Tacoma, I’m betting you can afford real leather seat covers. Oh and the break controller, have a professional do it. We don’t want to hear your whinny complaints about the install. That’s why there are professionals to do these task…. Think about that next time you try to do something beyond your skill level.

I think it is ridiculous and always have that Toyota doesn't have decent seats in the first place!!! Why can you not put power seats and decent seat coverings!!!????? Comfortable seats….. minor conveniences in your vehicles?! It is insane that the resale on the vehicles are so high on these things when I have to Sheldon Cooper old school click click click the dadgum seat manually to get comfortable!!!! Oh but they are so reliable!!!!! Are they????? Maybe at one point they were considered a reliable brand along with Honda….. but not anymore…… they are no where near worth the price and this crap!

I've installed a handful of aftermarket leather seat covers (Katzkin, etc) that replace the factory cloth, and removing the seats from the vehicle was required, but also fairly easy.

Even with this style I would never try to do it in the vehicle! Seats take a few extra minutes and need a table (workbench top that can get scratched up) to work on, but the time spent removing will be offset by the ability to maneuver around it. I.e.- it's a time saver in the grand scheme.

Get a socket wrench with good/extra leverage, because the bolts are always tight threading in and out the whole way. Disconnect any power harness, and use proper -careful- lifting techniques so you don't hurt your body.

I did this work in a professional automotive accessory/electronic install shop, where upholstery was not our typical job, but we figured it out just fine.

**It must be said, if you're considering this install, expect a struggle fitting the covers since they need to be tight to look good. I don't think my fingertips have ever felt that sort of aching from anything like trying to get the headrests wrapped around the foam and snugged up to clip. The big seat parts gave more to hold onto, so they weren't as bad.*

Not seat covers, I I installed a new convertible top on my Honda S2000. Worst PITA I EVER DID !

So the headline makes it sound like this is a Toyota problem. Why doesn't it take issue with the seat cover manufacturer? I have a 2001 Taco with 177K miles on it. My original seats look great. This is a.Toyota, not a.Chevy or Chrysler product. My Corolla has 210K miles and same thing, seats are great. Toyota uses high quality materials that are made to last. You pay more for a Toyota, but there is a reason. Finally convinced my wife to get away from the service constantly Chevy, and now she is hooked.

I completely understand! I purchased the same type of seat covers for my husband's 2013 Ford F450 truck. The original seat covers were gray cloth because the truck is basically a work truck. The new seat covers arrived the weekend of my birthday and they were no present to get on! It took both of us all day to get them on. We literally had to take breaks in between each one! They look great! We love them but hated getting them on!

I'm going to give a dissenting opinion. The new ones look ok, but I don't care for the pink diamond pattern. It makes them look cheap IMO, but then...I liked the originals too.

I think Jill's seat covers look great! When I bought my 2007 FJ Cruiser I waited for about a year before putting on seat covers. It is one of the best aftermarket options that I have done. After 17 years I finally took them off to launder (mine are a nylon cloth material). The original set upholstery underneath looks just as good as the day I took delivery in spite of loads of off-road and overland use including many hunting trips with my buddies. Great investment and great choice of material! Thumbs up!!

I am currently on a search for a new to me used suv. One of my deal breakers is the vehicle must have light color leather (like) seating. 90% of the vehicles i encounter have black interior. The salesmen keep telling me how easy i can install seat covers. Thank you for sharing this experience. I will now never let them sell me on that option. Still searching for my ideal suv.

I have found if you put a heavy duty trash bag over the seat then install the cover it’s a lot easier, then when on just pull the bag out. Hope this helps!

Ms Jill I think both looks good. It all depends on what u like and what look u are going for. For the other issue, I had the same issue with my Nissan Armada. I took it to the UHAUL place located in NC I moved a lot (MILITARY) I needed a way to tow stuff. They did a good job with putting on everything I needed (tow package). I bought the truck new 21 years later still going strong, never had any issues. Nissan is a good company and they give my back a full physical every year, to include the aftermarket tow package.

You should never cover your original seat covers because they contain side impact airbags which will fail to deploy if another vehicle hits you in the side.

I think you made a good decision. Resale value will be way better with like new interior seats, ect. Plus they do make it look tuff.

Keith (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 4:54PM

I think she did an awesome job! The covers to me look much better. A whole lot better! The original seats are ugly and they look to be cloth. She made a good choice with the leather look imo.
I’ve put several covers on and it seems that the new ones out now are really difficult sometimes to install but they look more like factory seats now than they do covers.
Again, nice job!

Get a REDARC TOW PRO ELITE BRAKE CONTROLLER, I have it and its the best, easy to install and works great. Also as far as the seat covers, if they are comfortable, easy to clean and protect the factory covers - leave them in until they start wearing. Have a great trip.

Bought 2024 Rav and totally hate factory seat covers. They are hot to sit on (AZ) and collect marks and dust. I am very disappointed.

I think they look good and you won't regret putting covers on keeps all your seats from fading and much easier to keep them clean.ive put covers in every vehicle that I've owned.

We (my sons and I) did it for 76 Chevrolet C10. It came out beautifully. We followed the directions, pretty closely, and used a premium $400 package in 2021. It was some work removing the seat and reinstalling it. The quote to have it done was $1300. The guy who quoted it had done it once before, and I don't think the quality of the materials was up to that in our kit. Overall we feel very good about the job - and saving $900.

Taste is very personal but I can I pretty sure that is not a seat cover a car with come with standard. My choice would be to find something very similar to the factory seat, because I don't want my vehicle to look like it is fitted with aftermarket seat covers.

The last vehicle I purchased with cloth seats was an 85 Toyota pickup. I have had over 15 vehicles since then and always leather seats, except for the 2024 Ford Maverick, which did not offer leather seats, but a fake leather like material. Needless to say, I truly hate it. I have considered replacing them but I will probably just sell the vehicle in a year or two. Leather not only wears well, but also jods up well with minimal care

Wade Curry (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 6:59PM

My dad had a brake controller installed for him at a RV dealership so it would be done correctly and help control the 26 foot camper he pulled along with having them install a hitch to the frame of his pickup. Not anything to mess around with. Steep hills and grades will allow a trailer to cause you to lose control without adequate brakes.

Phil (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 7:07PM

Jill has clearly never had to mow a lawn and probably has only had to sweat behind a desk and considering she can even afford a brand new vehicle and her "old" vehicle was only 2 years old she should just STFU. Unless you had a 4 cylinder 4Runner it should be able to tow and "small" camper and if it's not a double axle it shouldn't need breaks. Even if you wanted them you'd still have to install a break commander in BOTH vehicles. This article just makes me angry how stupid humanity is getting

Brent Roan (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 7:37PM

I like them they look much better than the original covers I am curently considering buying a tacoma witk an all black interior because i have never cared for the nearly white interior pannels that toyota has been famous for.GREAT JOB.

Lo (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 9:56PM

I put red and black just like those in my 24 Taco. The original seat were not as nice as your original. They looked like a Etsy 59 VW upcycle. Looked worn from day one. I did mine in stages bc my liver needed rest between fits of pulling gently and smacking myself in the face bc the seat cover wanted to share the S&M experience. They do look nice and clean up well.

Terry Breen (not verified)    July 13, 2025 - 10:02PM

The stock seats look better. The new covers look dated, like something from the sixties. Not impressed. I say get rid of those "new" covers and try again.
