For years, GM's V8 engines have faced intense scrutiny from truck owners concerned about lifter failures, valve train issues, and long-term reliability. Now, according to a new report from GM Authority, the automaker is reportedly taking significant steps behind the scenes to improve quality control for the next-generation Gen 6 Small Block engines that will power the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The stakes are high, especially given that some owners have already started scanning their 2026 Silverado VINs to confirm whether the DFM system has been deleted from their engine before they even drive off the lot.

While most truck buyers will never see these manufacturing changes firsthand, they could ultimately have a greater impact on ownership experience than any new touchscreen, styling update, or technology feature.

According to the report, GM is implementing tighter quality-control procedures on several key engine components while also bringing some critical parts and manufacturing processes in-house rather than relying on outside suppliers.

The second reported change involves bringing certain critical parts and manufacturing processes in-house.

By reducing dependence on outside suppliers for some operations, GM could potentially gain greater oversight of how components are produced and how consistently they meet specifications before being installed in customer vehicles.

I had lifter failure on my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 5.3 that caused my cam shaft to fail in 2010. This problem has been going on since then. This should have be a factor recall for all these engines. This failure stranded me 250 miles from home and required a total rebuild since I was approaching 100k miles. I lost all faith in Chevrolet and have held off buying a another one until they fix this engineering problem.

From what I've read (true or not) GM makes big money on loyal customers who trade for a new truck. I know some Chevy/GM owners, their loyalty is like a religion. Now whether the 2020-2026 engines and transmissions were designed to have planned obsolesce for future trade ins is not known, but GM knows. I own a 2021 silverado 5.3 lifter noise at 90k but was off and on. I was a GM ownrr for 45 years after this truck and performance im done. Leaning to Ram a ticks better than major repairs and no support. As Gm does not care but oh will they jump you through the hoops. I don't think automakers fully grasp the importance and impact their vehicles have. Cars and trucks they built and sold in the 80s and 90s are sealing the deal on new car sales today, 30-40 years later. I own a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 WT with the 4.3 L engine. At 85,000 MI I had the AFM cylinder number three exhaust valve lifter collapse. I called GM support and relayed my concerns. They called me a couple weeks later saying I was pre-approved for $1,280 refund. They strung me along for 4 months and then told me I wasn't getting a refund due to the fact that I had already gotten a discount. The Chevy dealer that did the work gave me a senior citizen discount of $150. I told them there would never be another GM product in my driveway, this being the 5th GM truck I have owned. And now with 95,000 miles on it I'm starting to experience torque converter failure. GM support will be hearing from me again.

Every single person I know who has owned a silverado or tahoe since 2012 has had nothing but problems. If its not lifters then its a transmission. Most get both if they drive it past 120k. I own a 2001 1st Gen silverado 2500hd duramax. 300k on it. At 200k I had the new sac 45 injectors installed, Suncoast gmax5 kit put in, about 20 other upgrades and efi live tunes. I've owned that truck for 21 years, abused it, pulled ridiculous loads with it and it keeps going. I currently pull a 38' camper with it. Can't even tell its there. No def, egr, blah, blah, blah or lifter issues. Just pulls, 530 rwhp. 20mpg. Never once left me stranded. I'll drive it for another 20 years if I can. I'll never take a chance on one of these new time bombs they're selling now. Probably switch to toyota if i want a newer gasser...

I have a 2021 2500HD with a 6.6. gasoline engine hta came apart at 48,000 miles. While apparently a rare occurrence for this motor, it did happen nonetheless. Chevrolet was very good about replacing the engine with a new one, and the replacement has run flawlessly for the 53K that I've put on the replacement engine, fingers crossed. Having always been a Ford driver, I moved to Chevrolet simply because I know the owner of the dealer and they wanted my business more than Ford did at the time. I've been very happy with the truck otherwise. That said, I'm going to watch very closely to see what happens with the next release of the new small block. I do not need another 3/4 ton truck when I've driven this one as far as I want to, and if things do not change for the better, I'll be forced to look elsewhere. It's a shame, really, as the Chevy has been very comfortable and I've enjoyed the truck, but I'm not going to voluntarily put myself into a ticking time-bomb that could cost many thousands to repair and/or lose in trade value if it just becomes too much to stomach. This is what happens when accountants start to run manufacturing instead of engineers, and the boardroom if forced to make decisions around failed government policy around idiotic cafe standards instead of having the freedom to design what will actually work.
