Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados want the FTC to force a recall for their air conditioning problems

Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are taking action trying to force General Motors to either recall their trucks or reimburse owners for the persistent problems with their air conditioning. Thousands of owners have reported problems and the condensers to fix the air conditioning are on back order.

When the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was voted Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Pickup Truck of the year, no one could have known that down the road the truck would develop huge problems with its air conditioning system. I’ve written two articles about the problems and they consistently draw the most comments. Now 2014 Chevrolet Silverado owners are asking the Federal Trade Commission to step in and force a recall.

Thousands of owners affected

I detailed the problems with the air conditioning in both 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras last month and also in October of 2016. Instead of air conditioning the vehicles start blowing hot air. Dealers are charging around $1000 to put in a new condenser to fix it. Owners say it is a faulty design and General Motors should be expediting the repairs.

An owner named Matt recently posted a comment on one of my stories. “Just called Federal Trade Commission, they were very surprised to hear there is no recall. Number is - 1-877-382-4357. Please give them a call and file a complaint.” Matt’s complaint is very similar to others I’ve heard. Matt writes, “The A/C unit went, now a national back order. Dealer said when it gets here it gets here, GM said call the dealer to find out when. There aren't even any after market condensers to get. Just how many vehicles are affected by this. I do know it covers Silverados between 2013 and 2016, I imagine it affects GMC also's. I've been waiting since April 2017 with 3 vehicles in front of me at the dealer.” Matt says he has also contacted a lawyer about a potential class action suit.

Chevrolet and GMC losing loyal customers

Scott W. speaks for a lot of owners when he commented on my story. Scott also bought his truck new in August of 2013. “I am sitting at 30 days since the part was ordered. As with everyone else I placed complaints to the dealership and GM customer service. I am in Tucson AZ which will average 100 degrees until the end of September. It is absolutely ridiculous that GM has not fast tracked design-engineering to create a resolution. Last time I checked they are one of the largest manufacturers on the planet. I also thought that with the large truck segment and loyal buyers, GM would step up and create solutions. I am shocked that they have not released a statement for dealers to explain what action they are taking. When you spend $50k on the new truck...you have very high expectations. GM, you are losing good customers!!”

Freddy M. commented on my post, that he, too, is fed up. “I also bought a brand new 2014 GMC Sierra that the AC went out on. I have already spent several hundred dollars to re-charge the unit and for new hoses only to have it all leak out the first day after. I have since ordered a new condenser unit that has been on BACK ORDER for over 3 months and still no news on when it will ship. I will assume that this back order is due to the ongoing problems with this particular condenser and the overwhelming need for them due to their poor design. GM should definitely step up and take care of this obvious problem with this particular condenser unit. It's probably going to cost me close to $1,000 out of my pocket and I have been without my truck for 3 months and still waiting.... I have been a loyal GM fan my whole life, but it might be time to start looking at other brands.”

An owner named Craig posted a response that he received from General Motors. “Hello Craig, Thank you for following up with us. I certainly understand how stressful this situation is for you and I do apologize for the delay you're experiencing with parts. I can confirm the condenser is on national backorder. GM is working with two suppliers in order to alleviate this backlog for customers and are filling orders as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, there is no ETA for delivery at this time. If you'd like, we'd be glad to connect with your dealership just to make certain your part is ordered and formally document your concerns in our system. If this is of interest, feel free to send us your contact information, dealer name, and current mileage. Jasmine GMC Customer Care. Been a month so far waiting for a new condenser, I agree that this may well be the last GM truck I own, my last truck was a 2012 GMC Sierra and had air conditioner problems and now my 2015 GMC Sierra, get it together GM!”

One of the problems in mandating a recall is that typically federal agencies only require companies to recall vehicles if there is a risk of danger to the driver or passengers. A lack of air conditioning is uncomfortable but may not rise to the level of danger in all circumstances. It is surprising to me that General Motors hasn’t stepped up to fix such popular and important vehicles for the automaker.

I am a second owner to a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with 73, 000 on the odometer. When I bought it from AutoNation the air conditioning was blowing cold air. Two days after that the air conditioning was blowing hot air. I went back to the dealership and they are holding any responsibility for it. I asked them about the certified preowned paperwork of the 117 point inspection and they misplaced it. After a month I decided to take it to my mechanic he said there was a cracked weld on the condenser resulting Freon leak. He also said that the compressor was leaking which has not been repaired yet. I have spent 600 dollars in repair costs so far and it is still blowing hot. I have seen many instances of this related issue and I will also be part of the class action lawsuit. I am also going after AutoNation for dropping the ball.

My AC went out in my 2014 Sierra. I'm the second owner of the vehicle and it just so happens to have happened not long after purchase. I find it hard to believe that this issue was not known about by certified GM dealer. Called GM about the issue and they gave me a $100 voucher to perform the diagnostics. I had to pay the remainder of the diagnostics balance just to find out that this certified GM dealership wants $2800 to repair my air conditioning in my pickup. I'm a single father of a 3 year old, I don't have $2800 lying around to fix my AC!! And now my daughter has to be miserable any time she rides in my vehicle, it's hardly even safe! I'm going back to Ford!

I bought my 2014 Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 4x4 in December of 2014 brand new, the truck has 42,000 on it now. The AC quit today in 112 degree Arizona weather, not sure whats going on with it taking it to a mechanic this coming week all I know is the AC Belt is missing with belt shavings everywhere. Count me as another victim of GM POOR AC design on 2014 Silverado's, my truck is a second vehicle that sits in the garage most of the time its pretty much babied not abused you would think the AC would at least last 80,000 miles. If anyone has any info on a class action suite for this problem please post it I want to sign up.

2014 Silverado, AC went out, dealer replaced cracked compressor at a cost of over $900. Now a year later AC is out again and they want $1800 to replace condenser, hose, and bracket. I refused to have them service it and will be contacting GM. Either they replace it at their expense and eat the cost of their engineering mistake or there will be no future GM sales to my family.

I have a 2014 Silverado and my AC started blowing hot air in July 2019. I took it to the dealer and they said they could not find a leak after 3 days! They charged it up with Freon and put a purple dye in the system.. Well.... it just started blowing hot again not even 3 months later in mid October 2019!!! I’ve looked all over and see NO purple dye anywhere..... I will now have to take it back and hear the same story..... I am one of the biggest Chevy fans but must agree with the other people commenting and start looking at other brands!! This is ridiculous!!!! I have been driving a Chevy truck since I was 16 years old and am now 52... What a shame... Let’s go Chevy... STEP IT UP!

2014 Silverado AC failed at the end of summer 2019. I recharged it with freon and made into winter. Now in 2020 as the temperatures rise I charger the system with a UV dye to try and find the leak. I was successful and the leak is at the weld on the front right side of the condenser. Time to spend the money for a new one! This really sucks just after Christmas!

My 2014 Silverado just start blowing hot air at 53,524. Called dealer and they stated that they were aware of problems with 2014-2018 Ac. No recall and 189.00 to diagnose the problem and around 1200.00 to fix. This is my fourth GMC/Chevy vehicle since 1999 and will be looking for something else on the next purchase after I this Bullcrap fixed. I just received a Chevy legends cap and gear from GMC.

Yesterday I paid a shop $1150 to replace a condenser for my air conditioning unit on my 2014 Silverado pick up. I couldn't believe GM is not standing behind the product that I've been buy for 50 years. It's obviously an engineering problem.
Makes me very sad. Please let me know if they can be forced to pay for my repair.

GM honored repairs on Suburbans and Tahoes... not any of the Silverados even though its the same issue. There is a class action lawsuit in Detroit. i contacted the law office and they say we just have to wait for it to go through
My dealer gave me the info about GM not fixing the AC units on Silverados. I will never buy another GM product because of this. We need to file federal complaints.

Last week my 2014 ac just stopped . 70$ later and a recharge it worked for a a day or two . This is not right for this type of a failure, step up GM . Does anyone have the # of the law office in Detroit to contact?

Please add me to your list of people who have a 2014 Silverado who A/C condenser has gone out with under 75,000 miles. Dealer wants almost $1300.00 to repair.

Add oil pump replacement to the long list of things wrong with this truck. Had transmission go out at 60k,ac go out around 20-30k and now the oil pump at 85k.

I really want to buy a new Chevrolet or GMC pickup but for the first time I am fearful
to spend that much money on a vehicle that I can't completely trust. I haven't heard anything back about the AC repair for $1200 on my 2014 Silverado.

My girl has a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab and her ac started blowing hot air ( during a south Texas summer! ) right after her warranty ended. She paid a little over $900 to have it replace, and after a year, same problem again. We never got it fixed because of the cost and after seeing others are having the same issue, why should we? Next vehicle we get wont be a Chevy truck.

Robles (not verified)    May 26, 2020 - 8:11PM

Paid $1200 to fix my condenser and it went out 13 months later right after the year warranty expired . I will never buy a chevy again 2014 50k miles parked in the driveway..

I purchased a 2014 Silverado brand new love my truck only problem is my A/C not working. Several times it has quit working and now the ac compressor doesn’t kick in. With all the complaints why hasn’t there been a recall. What do I do to fix or find the problem.

I also bought a 2014 Gmc Serra. The a/c went out just like everybody else’s did. Dealer fixed it the first time. Well that’s not exactly correct. They put a bandaid on the problem by changing the low side hose. That lasted 2 years then went out again and again and again and again. I’m surprised GM hasn’t recalled this problem in an attempt to keep customers. I’m not sure about everyone else but I’m telling as many as possible not to buy GM products because they don’t stand behind what they sell. As soon as I can there will be a Dodge Ram sitting in my driveway instead of this p o s. Transmission has been changed (at my cost of 4300) the back of the seats won’t stay on. Mirrors behind the visors rattle like crazy. Several recalls ( but not on a/c problems) Good bye GM never ever again for me and my household.

I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado. My A/C has been nothing but problems. Replaced condenser, dryer, lines, compressor, ECT...... The very next summer, same issue again. AGAIN!!!!!! REALLY???
There needs to be a recall!

I have a 2015 Silverado with 55,000 miles and a bad AC condenser. This should be addressed by GM and/or AC Delco.

Randy (not verified)    August 17, 2020 - 6:35PM

I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado 73,000 miles AC blowing hot air. Have seen several comments about the same problem. I bought a new 2007 Chevy 3/4 it has over 100,000 miles AC works great. Something went south between those years. GM needs to resolve these issues.

John Hummel (not verified)    September 3, 2020 - 12:39AM

Have a 2014 LT Z71 Silverado, 36XXX miles. Purchased new. The AC has never been good at cold air, as observed in my other vehicles. As of late, it just got worse, as are the many complaints on similar vehicles, and is just blowing warm air. Not even trying to be even cool. Have been watching on the internet to see if GM is going to something about this issue, such as a recall, or join in with a class action suit. This truck has had a ton of recalls and this is just one more thing. Keep your fingers crossed people that Karma will help us out on this one.
