Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are hot about AC problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has many drivers hot under the collar because of continual problems with the truck’s air conditioning. There are multiple forums dedicated to the same issue. Some drivers had problems right after buying their pickups. Others are suffering with sweltering temperatures right now.

One forum I checked has 19 pages of complaints dedicated to the air conditioning issues. The last post, in September of 2016, pretty well sums up the frustration. This 2014 Silverado owner says he has had to take it in for repairs every three months. “This was my first new car to me. I was planning to buy one for my daughter, but not with this track record. I just had the AC fixed 2 months ago. Today, on the way home from work, the compressor seized and the belt broke. Now it's Friday, no service centers are open, and I live in the south so it is hot and I have no AC. I was planning to take the kids out on the boat, but I am not putting them in a hot truck with no AC. This may very well be the last Chevy I ever buy.”

This owner reported his problem, in late August of 2016. “So I have a 2014 Silverado crewcab. Last year during the height of summer with my kids in the truck my ac broke. I bought this thing new in June of 2014. So I take it in and it was a broken line. I was just a hair over the 36000 miles already in a year but the service guy took care of me. Well here we are now with the temps in the 100's in San Antonio 13 months after the ac was fixed, and it's broke again. I hate this truck.”

Other drivers are reporting similar issues. What appears to be the most upsetting is that the same issues keep reoccurring. The air conditioner suddenly starts blowing warm air. The owners say the repairs take time and never fix the problem for long. “Turns out the compressor and a
hose went out on it. Warranty took care of it but I was left without a vehicle for a few days and upset that practically a new vehicle was already having issues. Got my truck back and about 2 months later guess what? You guessed, the a/c went out again and another compressor went bad.”

A check of the website that monitors complaints about all vehicles, finds that there have been 11 formal complaints made about the ongoing problems with the air conditioning on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados.

One owner named Brad, from Little Rock, says a dealership finally levelled with him and told him what the real problem is. Brad says they told him “They have a design flaw in the metal part of the hose so we replace the hose and add a support bracket. I asked them why the 2016 models do not have the bracket and was told the a/c hose was redesigned for them and the new hose would not work on a 2014 model.” Brad is furious because he had to pay for the repair and General Motors will not reimburse him.

Another owner, from Texarkana, adds “Was told by the dealer that a bracket had broken and a hose came loose and it would be 550.00 dollars to fix. Time to change brands.”

There have not been any recalls issued for the hose and bracket problems, but it sounds like the issue is wide spread enough that dealers should be aware of the proper repairs. If you are having your AC repaired, It might help to point out all of the complaints and see if you can get it replaced under warranty, or if they will work with you on bringing down the price.

I have a 2014 Silver-ado ,my air conditioning has been out for 3 months, now I live in Dallas Texas, so to hot to drive. so the truck sits in the drive way.the Chevy Dealership is telling me the part is on back order ! but for 3 months, never heard of this. such a popular truck, you would thing someone in their marketing or executive level would make this a top priority repair. since they are always bragging about how many pickup;s they sell in Texas.

I drive a 2014 GMC Sierra.
Had my truck at a GM dealer for a regular maintenance service.
Tech told me I needed to replace my radiator.
Turns out what he thought was a rad leak was actually the same problem that many other sierra/Silverado owners are facing and that the a/c condenser is what was leaking and not the rad.
2k for a rad that didn't need to be replaced and now I need to get my a/c fixed.
Never buying a GM again.

2014 Silverado started blowing warm air at 39000,Had to replace condenser and compressor at my expense. 4 months later lost all freon because of a leak in a hose, Next A/C problem will be a trade-in at the Ford Dealership.

I've had my 2014 Chevy Silverado since December 2013 and I just turned 40,000 miles. Yesterday I started my truck and the A/C never cooled down. The Chevy dealer diagnosed the problem and found that the condenser needed to be replaced because it had a major leak. Two gaskets, two pounds of refrigerant and a condenser later the bill came to $1100.00. And just like everyone else having this issue, I found out that I am not the only one having this problem. I asked the tech to save the condenser for me which he did. Upon inspecting it, I don't see any damage from road debris. Further, my truck has not been off-road, those are 40,000 highway miles. I would advise anyone to make a formal complaint with GM if they are having this problem, as I will certainly be doing just that.

Add my name to the list. 2014 bought in November of 2014 57,000 miles. In the past two weeks have replaced condenser and compressor to the tune of $1500. Yesterday started blowing hot air again after two days out of the shop. No more Chevys for me.

Another "hot" owner! Bought a 2014 in March 2015 and have 43K miles on it. Blowing hot air. A recharge kit had it blowing cold for a day, so definitely a leak somewhere. Won't have an opportunity to take it to the dealer for another 3 day.

Add another 2014 Silverado to the list. A/C started blowing warm air at 38,750 miles. It was a leak in the compressor to condenser line.
The dealer wanted $485 for the line repair. I told him to forget it it and that I would have the repair done at the Ford dealer when I traded it in on my new Ford F-150 (I was very serious). GM agreed to cover all but $210 so I let the Chevy dealer fix it. A $5.00 bracket was also added to keep the hose from vibrating. (I may still get that F-150

Another person with this issue! 2014 Silverado 1500 LT Z71, 42K miles. Working on Friday. Blowing hot on Saturday. Took it in today and the AC condenser is cracked. I'm told the part will be in tomorrow. $1200 fix for a design problem. Since I'm out of warranty, dealer said GM won't cover me. Why is the customer on the hook for that? This is not normal wear and tear if it's a NATIONWIDE issue.

Bought my 2014 Silverado new. Love the truck! A/C line went out after two years, cost $350, no warranty.
Now at three years, blowing warm air again, dealer says, need to replace the condenser due to a leak, $1285.
After reading comments of other owners, this is an obvious systemic problems that should and must be addressed by Chevrolet. The issue must be addressed by Chevrolet, problem fixed and owners reimbursed for the systemic failure. Anything short will surely result in continued erosion of "Chevrolet" brand credibility.

This truck is junk, radio ,camera, a/c all has stopped working I bought this truck at a high price being the newest supposedly the best (absolutely not) drive train is noisy. This needs to address by GM AND A LAWSUIT NEEDS TO BE FILED ON THE LEMON LAWS. THIS IS NO DOUBT A WIDE SPREAD LEMON LINE OF TRUCKS

This past Friday my A/C was blowing just fine before getting out for lunch. I got back in my truck from lunch and my A/C was blowing hot. I checked all fuses and relays. All were still good. The compressor is not engaging at all. My truck has 58,500 miles on it. I've not had any of the standard complaints about this truck since I purchased it in 2014. But no A/C is a huge problem here in Mississippi.

Same issue. 40,000 miles- battery last week, A/C blowing hot air this week. I buy about 10 suburbans a year from my business. The last one was the last GM product I will ever buy because of this. Hope the $1200 they get screwing thier customers over thier design flaw is worth the $500K a year worth of fleet business they just lost.

AC condenser went out at 75,000 miles on my 2014 Silverado. Never had a problem with an AC before. Dealer was great, gave me a new Silverado to drive while repaired. But it did cost over $800 to repair. Based on the number of AC problems with 2014 Silverado this should have been covered under a recall warranty. Very poor customer service from General Motors. I am very disappointed.

71000 on my 2014 silverado double cab and leaks freon. Have to put a can of R134 in about every seven days. This is my fourth Silverado and may just be my lat one.

I just ran into an AC issue over the last two weeks! I have owned 7 GM vehicles with zero AC issues! Brought my truck to the dealer they tell me that the cost to fix the as replacing a line and putting in a bracket will be $476... after doing a little research I callled the GM customer service line by 5:30pm the dealer called me and said they had received a call from GM and were blind sided. I informed them I was curious if I was the only person with this ac issue and come to find out I wasn't. They advised they had never heard of this ac issues before and were just made aware of it when I called GM and they were contacted. To make a long story short GM indicated the would pay for 60 percent of the repair on there crappy part that is known to fail.

Same thing as everyone else, 2014 Z71 bought new, compressor seized up at 37,500, then had a leak in a hose at 68,000, now at 78,000 have to replace the condenser. Been a ford guy most of my life, took a chance on a chevy, it will be my family's one and only chevy.

My husband purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brand new in October 2014. The air conditioner began giving us trouble in June - July 2017. The air conditioner finally went out in August 2017. We were told it was the evaporator coil, which had to be replaced for $1,700.00. In September 2017, the air conditioner went out again. We were then told it was the compressor, which had to be replaced for an additional $1,800.00. The vehicle was no longer covered by warranty, therefore; this was all out of pocket expense. I contacted the Federal Trade Commission 877-382-4357 and filed a complaint.

I am currently into my second breakdown of my A/C in my truck and its only 3 years old. GM needs to do something about this.

2014 Silverado bought new in April 2014 34000 miles on it. Air quit working. Took to dealer, charged 105.00 and told me it was a design flaw. Why charge me if they new it was a design flaw? They want 650.00 plus to fix it. Had GM trucks since 1976. Never again.

robert (not verified)    October 16, 2017 - 5:01AM

another a/c problem dealer said compressor and condenser 1800 dollars to fix two weeks minimum no truck. what award commercial is there for that.

Wow ,had no idea that this many people had their a/c go out . I just have 20 thousand miles on my Silverado High country. It's now at the dealership getting a new compressor put in on my 2014. At a cost of 1,050 dollars and I just purchased it 3 months ago. Yes I did ask if there was a recall and I got a big fat NO. I'm calling that number too 1-800)222-1020

Oct 2017 have 36000 miles on my 2014 Texas Edition Silverado and AC belt broke, my mechanic says a rod from inside the compressor broke loose and went through outer wall of compressor, thanks GM

John (not verified)    November 17, 2017 - 11:37AM

Does anyone know of a class action lawsuit against GM on this ac issue? My 2014 Silverado just had the same ac issues, it's dead. They told me it would cost $900 to fix. Making it worse, the mechanic told me I was his 8th 2014 Silverado in his shop with the same ac issue. What makes me frustrated now is that I just received a letter from GM yesterday stating my 2015 Suburban may experience this exact same issue. Called GM on it, crickets....they said there are no issues reported with the ac on the 2014 and that they would let me know if it gets worse. They said I would be notified if there are more complaints...seriously!!!!....no pun intended, but I'm hot right now.

I did a lot of highway miles with my 2014 Silverado but right at 70,000 miles I have just heat. No AC and no defrost. Sounds like the hose, lack of a bracket and poor condenser design lead to new belts and compressors. I will also add the cabin filter is a poor design. I one dollar piece of plastic lexan needs to be slipped under the filter before it is pulled out or all the dirt falls right into the fan. GM this is the last one.

Doug Holm (not verified)    November 25, 2017 - 4:06PM

Another 2014 Silverado A/C compressor bites the dust. It only has 35,768 miles on it. I only drive it 11 miles a day, with a couple of long road trips. The belt was completely burnt in half. This must have been what I smelled 2 weeks ago. I should not have traded in my 99 2w drive.

Byron (not verified)    November 28, 2017 - 5:07PM

Add my 2014 Silverado LT double cab to the list, at only 25k miles! A/C condenser hose has been replaced and broken 3 times now, twice within one month, and to replace to hose and recharge the freeon is over 600$ every time it breaks, 3rd time is a charm I guess time to trade it in for the new Ford F-150 when it gets out of the shop this time. Absolute BS, I advise anyone to save your money before buyin GM anything because I called Chevy and they basically told me it was about 2 months out of warranty so it was on me because “they don’t know how the truck has been treated” I said the truck has been babied and it has had all of its oil changes at your “certified dealer service” and every time it’s 108 point inspection says everything on the truck is perfect so I said is the inspection a sham too? Stumped them on that one a little lol but they still said they weren’t going to do anything about it

Rusty I (not verified)    November 29, 2017 - 12:21PM

Just went out yesterday at 70k and immediately took to shop to look at it since I go to south Texas quite a bit. They replaced seals from hose to compressor as well as another lb-ish ($165) and it worked until this morning. I’ve owned Silverados since I was 15 and am now 45 and cannot remember ever having to jack with the ac until this 2014 model. RECALL! RECALL! RECALL!
