Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are hot about AC problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has many drivers hot under the collar because of continual problems with the truck’s air conditioning. There are multiple forums dedicated to the same issue. Some drivers had problems right after buying their pickups. Others are suffering with sweltering temperatures right now.

One forum I checked has 19 pages of complaints dedicated to the air conditioning issues. The last post, in September of 2016, pretty well sums up the frustration. This 2014 Silverado owner says he has had to take it in for repairs every three months. “This was my first new car to me. I was planning to buy one for my daughter, but not with this track record. I just had the AC fixed 2 months ago. Today, on the way home from work, the compressor seized and the belt broke. Now it's Friday, no service centers are open, and I live in the south so it is hot and I have no AC. I was planning to take the kids out on the boat, but I am not putting them in a hot truck with no AC. This may very well be the last Chevy I ever buy.”

This owner reported his problem, in late August of 2016. “So I have a 2014 Silverado crewcab. Last year during the height of summer with my kids in the truck my ac broke. I bought this thing new in June of 2014. So I take it in and it was a broken line. I was just a hair over the 36000 miles already in a year but the service guy took care of me. Well here we are now with the temps in the 100's in San Antonio 13 months after the ac was fixed, and it's broke again. I hate this truck.”

Other drivers are reporting similar issues. What appears to be the most upsetting is that the same issues keep reoccurring. The air conditioner suddenly starts blowing warm air. The owners say the repairs take time and never fix the problem for long. “Turns out the compressor and a
hose went out on it. Warranty took care of it but I was left without a vehicle for a few days and upset that practically a new vehicle was already having issues. Got my truck back and about 2 months later guess what? You guessed, the a/c went out again and another compressor went bad.”

A check of the website that monitors complaints about all vehicles, finds that there have been 11 formal complaints made about the ongoing problems with the air conditioning on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados.

One owner named Brad, from Little Rock, says a dealership finally levelled with him and told him what the real problem is. Brad says they told him “They have a design flaw in the metal part of the hose so we replace the hose and add a support bracket. I asked them why the 2016 models do not have the bracket and was told the a/c hose was redesigned for them and the new hose would not work on a 2014 model.” Brad is furious because he had to pay for the repair and General Motors will not reimburse him.

Another owner, from Texarkana, adds “Was told by the dealer that a bracket had broken and a hose came loose and it would be 550.00 dollars to fix. Time to change brands.”

There have not been any recalls issued for the hose and bracket problems, but it sounds like the issue is wide spread enough that dealers should be aware of the proper repairs. If you are having your AC repaired, It might help to point out all of the complaints and see if you can get it replaced under warranty, or if they will work with you on bringing down the price.

while in WestVirginia this week my 2014 Silverado A/C started blowing hot air tried to find a dealership to repair it but was told I had to wait a week to get it in. I'm on the road from Okla. headed to Georgia. A dealership can get it in in Athens next Monday. Not happy Chevy, going back to my other brand when I get home!!!!!

My 2014 Silverado will more than likely be my last GM product ever. Mine needs a condenser, 3 year old truck with 60k miles on it and it's on intergalactic backorder. Dealer told me about a TSB regarding a updated condenser so I tried calling the Customer Assistance Center to see if they could provide some "cost assistance". I was told that since I bought it used they couldn't help me. Really? So this is how GM supports it's products? Hope they enjoyed the bailout money Obama gave them, I'll be trading this POS at the Ford dealer across the street.

my 2014 Silverado 23000 miles started blowing hot air and so was I. If your warranty is over and your like I am jack of all trades, defect is the ac discharge line. I ordered one online had it fixed in an hour for a total of $50 all included. their defect is in the bend on the aluminum portion over stressed built to fail!!!!

Hot air blowing with AC on. I googled "AC problems 2014 silverado" and got lots of hits. I replaced the compressor line, but it still wouldn't hold freon. I contacted GM (1-800-222-1020) and told them my warranty was out (48000 miles), but have owned the vehicle less than 3 years. They set me up with a local dealer to have the AC checked out. Yep, it was the compressor and it would cost $1098.00 to repair. I explained to the GM rep that this is my 4th new GM truck, and I've never had AC issues with any of them. They said they'd see what they could do.
Well, after sending me to the dealership to confirm the AC problem, GM refused to help on the cost.

I intend to write letters to the editors of most of the auto magazines about this. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Hey, thank you for the information. I had similar ac problems with a dodge 2001 caravan, warranty covered for five years, then sixth year, same problem, always at the first of summer. Had a pro from a real repair shop fix it sixth time, never had a problem again.
Now reading your post lets me know Chevy must have bought all the crap from Chrysler and put it in their 2014 Chevy's which is what I have now, leak in condenser. Not going to make the same mistake as with the chrysler, will do bandage fix of condenser which GM wants $1100.00 to fix, I can buy after market for under $500.00 and replace everything from a pro, not a hack company like GM.

Has anyone been able to figure out a permanent solution to the ac blowing hot and radio (rosen) freezing up? I would love for my 2013 tahoe to be covered under a recall, but it looks like i just wont happen, just need it fixed like 2yrs ago. Any advice would be helpful!!! TYA

My dealer is trying to help, but there is a national back order on the parts. I have a case number from Chevy and was told it's a "design flaw".
So no recall, yet, WTF. Come on GM your the largest truck company in the world, fix the problem and keep your customers. I also went to the US DOT Traffic Safety Adminiatration and filed a complaint. If we all file a compliant, maybe something will happen.

1 month ago I sat in my 2014 Z71 and it got warm enough out here in Michigan to turn on my AC, to my surprise warm air only. When I took it to the dealership I was told by the service manager that 3 other trucks in the shop had the same issue and that the part was 2-3 week national back order. Then they want me to pay $981 (estimate) to have it fixed. I have owned the truck since new and have had continuing issues with this truck. Burns a quart of oil between oil changes, tick coming from the motor and I have been told that it's all normal. Normal for a truck 3 years old to burn oil? So I am out of my bumper to bumper warranty and soon will be out of my driveline warranty. Makes me sad that my parents, wife's dad, and my grandparents all worked for GM and the products that have come out are garbage and they do nothing to help the little guy. Still have 2 years of payments before this POS is paid off. Worst purchase ever. Thanks GM for making such a quality product!

Add my name to the list of 2014 silverado owners dealing with a faulty AC condenser. They should be issuing a damn recall on this. The dealer has had my truck now for over a month with no sign a a replacement part. They keep telling me it could take more than 3 months to get a part as it is on backorder.

MICHAEL DRONSFIELD (not verified)    June 9, 2017 - 10:05PM

AC CONDENSER gone in my 2014 Sierra. $1200 to fix. HOWEVER!! I found out today it would be up to 2 months to get the part because, 18000 units are on back order! YES! 18000 units!
Why is there not a recall on this issue?
Ridiculous

Well add my name to the list of 2014 chevy silverado AC fiasco. I bought my silverado ltz in Feb 2014. It only has 27000 miles but is past the 36 month bumper to bumper warranty. It suddenly stopped blowing cool air. Took it in to the dealer and they had to replace the bracket and the hose, which got a hole in it due to bracket failing. General Motors knows this is a faulty part on there behalf, but will not make a recall on it since it is not a safety feature. They are making a killing off the charges to repair this faulty mess.

Brian Henderson (not verified)    June 10, 2017 - 6:43AM

25,500 miles and yes my AC has gone out.
Chevy support was useless and no voluntary recall.
I was instructed by the National Highway Traffic/Safety admin to do the following:

Contact: State attorney general
Advise on recourse
Possibly take part in a class action lawsuit

Contact the Federal Trade Commission - 877.382.4357 lodge a complaint.

If enough of us file a complaint they will act (just don't know how many that will take)

Chevy Silverado 2014 air compressor out 25000 miles bought it 37 months ago. Chevrolet won't cover the cost, went from Chevy to Ford, also had Dodge, sorry but looking at foreign now.

Jon (not verified)    June 12, 2017 - 1:57PM

I have been on back order over a month. And since I bought my used truck from Canada they are voiding the warrenty because it wasnt purchased in USA. I'm never buying GM again.

James (not verified)    June 12, 2017 - 4:23PM

I have been waiting for over 60 days for a A/C condenser for a 2014 silverado, Chevy customer care offered the standard we cant help you the part is on back order excuse and then asked what do you want us to do about it? Chevy and their team of lawyers have already calculated their loss and dont care about this problem...... Contact DOT and file a compliant and follow up with your state attorney office. Don't let this slide, Chevy and GMC must learn for their lack of service.

Hayze (not verified)    June 13, 2017 - 8:31AM

2014 Silverado A/C condenser went out -- was also told on national back-order and no idea when part will be available. Maybe they should shut down production of new vehicles and devote a plant to manufacture these parts fo everyone who needs one. This is ridiculous!

Gary (not verified)    June 13, 2017 - 2:45PM

Same as everyone else. AC is blowing air that is hotter than the 94 degrees outside right now. Truck has 40k miles on it. Called the local dealership. They can't take it until one week from today. I guess I'll be miserable until then, but probably even more so after I get the bill. I have never owned a vehicle where the AC died on me before. Definitely a first. Thanks Chevy for such great reliability and standing behind your defective product.

CRAIG CASTRO (not verified)    June 15, 2017 - 6:17AM

I highly recommend anyone who has this problem contract the federal consumer protection division and also your state attorney general's office . Because no matter how we feel about our trucks gm and Chevy are holding their heads in the sand cause it effects all the trucks . They are hopping it happens after warranty period has passed .

Rich Peacock (not verified)    June 15, 2017 - 3:01PM

Me too... I just thought I was going crazy because I can add refrigerant to it and it will go back to blowing cold for a few days but then it quickly changes back to warm air and then hot air.

Peyton (not verified)    June 19, 2017 - 1:12PM

2014 Chevy Silverado, AC went out at 65,000 miles was going to cost $950 to fix condensor after I already paid $150 for them to run some dye through it. Same problem as listed above. What a joke!

Steve (not verified)    June 21, 2017 - 8:12PM

My 2014 is costing me a $1000 to replace compressor and hoses. I have read all the comments. I bragged about chevy till this. Come on GM step up to the plate.

Gina (not verified)    June 22, 2017 - 2:28AM

I am another owner of 2014 Silervado, broken AC with compressor on back order. I have added freon several times and it keeps leaking out. After 54k miles, no more warranty. The dealer told me the part is on back order. I need stop calling them, they will call me "when" it is in. They have several others on order also. This is another problem added to the list I have had with the vehicle since I purchased it. The first winter the four wheel drive locked up, I had to have truck towed twice. They sold me the vehicle with 4WD in AUTO position. I was told, I am only supposed to use 4WD as needed. There was a computer part on back order that fixed the problem, but still I am not supposed to use AUTO feature. I have also had problems with truck locking up, apparently Anti Theft issue. I have 2 postcards for 3 separate unrelated recalls I need to now have fixed. Not only will I never by another Chevy, but the dealer, needs some help with customer relations!

Michael (not verified)    June 24, 2017 - 4:06PM

Had the same problem a few weeks ago on my 2014 GMC. Dealer I took it to said its a nation wide problem and that the condensers are on back order and there were two people in front of me with the same problem. What they Didn't tell me is that some dealers are hoarding the condensers and won't release them to other dealers. I found this out by calling a few dealers and found one that told me who had some. Had to drive an hour out of my way but was not looking forward to summer camping trips with no AC.

Matt (not verified)    June 24, 2017 - 8:24PM

Also, have same issues with 2014 Silverado, battery went early, radio dies, camera failure, and most important the A/C unit went now a national back order. Dealer said when it gets here it gets here, GM said call the dealer to find out when. So, I contacted a class action lawyer give them a call 1-206-623-7292 x8355 ask for Jessica Thompson. There aren't even any after market condensers to get. Just how many vehicles are affected by this. I do know it covers Silverados between 2013 and 2016 I imagine it affects GMC also's. I've been waiting since April 2017 with 3 vehicles in front of ma at the dealer.
