These Are My Four Predictions About The 2026 Toyota Supra That Are Likely To Happen

From what we know so far, the 2026 Toyota Supra will not go fully electric and will stay true to tradition.

Toyota Supra is in its fifth generation and by now, people largely overcame the fact it is a re-bodied BMW Z4, after seeing how capable it is. We know Toyota Supra GRMN is coming for the 2025 model year, and it will be the swan song of the fifth-generation Supra.

The good news is, a sixth generation is on the way for 2026, and it will still be a GR Supra. There has been a lot of chatter about the future of the Toyota Supra, and after sifting through a vast amount of information, here are my five predictions about the 2026 Toyota GR Supra that are extremely likely to happen.

2026 Toyota GR Supra will still be combustion-powered, but an electric variant is not ruled out

Reports from Japan confirm that the next-generation Toyota GR Supra will continue to rely on BMW power. Once again, the Supra will be motivated by a turbocharged inline-six engine from the Bavarian carmaker. It could be a version of the current model's B58 unit or the twin-turbo S58 that would power the 2025 Toyota Supra GRMN.

Reports from Best Car Web also indicate some sort of electrification. While a plug-in hybrid is being mentioned, I believe a mild-hybrid powertrain is what we are going to get. This way the GR Supra will continue to be lightweight and feel like an old-school, internal-combustion-powered sports car, which is what Supra fans want.

A fully-electric Toyota Supra will not happen for a number of reasons.

1. While EV sales have boomed over the last few years, EV sports cars haven't and will likely never do so.

2. Production of e-fuel-powered vehicles has been approved and given Toyota's efforts in hydrogen combustion engines, an EV Supra would make even less sense.

3. Toyota plans to continue using BMW hardware to power the Supra and given BMW hasn't set a target for killing off the internal combustion engine, the Supra would remain ICE-powered indefinitely.

Toyota already seems to be closer to giving us a hydrogen-combustion engine car than most other manufacturers involving hydrogen-burning powertrains. While the GR Yaris engine was the first to run on hydrogen, Toyota is also working with Yamaha to make a V-8 running on liquid hydrogen. Meanwhile, BMW has its own advancements in hydrogen propulsion.

I personally spoke with a BMW representative back in 2010, who told me the only thing stopping them from bringing out a production, hydrogen model was politics. Now that regulations permit the production of e-fuel-powered vehicles, Toyota and BMW might be teaming up to adapt the inline-six engine for hydrogen.

Toyota's EV sports car will, likely, be the new Celica

As for the electric variant, this will, I think this would be the next-generation Toyota Celica. Honda already showed a Prelude EV concept, which is said to be nearing production status, so an EV competitor from Toyota is a logical thing, given that Celica and Prelude were competitors in the past. Moreover, Toyota wouldn't dare turn one of its most popular sports cars – the Supra – into a fully electric model.

2026 Toyota GR Supra will be inspired by the Mk4 Supra

1993 Toyota Supra

With everything known so far, Toyota Supra fans can take a breath. The next-generation Supra will not only continue to be a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe powered by a straight-six engine, but the latest renderings show it will, likely, be inspired by the Mk4 Toyota Supra. The 1990s Supra is still enjoying great popularity, despite prices going absurd, but in 2026, its iconic design could make a return.

While these are just renderings of the 2026 Toyota Supra, Best Car Web has been quite accurate in portraying upcoming models in the past, so here's hoping Toyota doesn't deviate too much from what we see. One thing we know is that the 2026 Toyota Supra will still be a two-seater.
