Toyota and Lexus seem to be churning out a plethora of new models every year. While the Japanese carmaker still offers great perceived reliability, advanced tech, and quality, the number of service recalls lately has been alarming. On one hand, it means quality control may leave something to be desired, on the other - it proves Toyota is willing to fix the imperfections in its vehicles. Whether you look at this as a “glass half-empty” or a “glass half-full” situation, Toyota has issued another recall for multiple models.

At first glance, the issue doesn’t sound like anything major, but it still poses a potential safety hazard.

Toyota and Lexus models (and one Subaru model) may experience software issues due to a glitch in the Parking Assist control unit, which works with the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM). The issue manifests itself when you are backing up or when the car is switched in reverse shortly after startup. This causes the infotainment screen to freeze and display an incorrect image from the rearview camera.

This can potentially cause an accident due to the screen giving incorrect information about your surroundings. The last thing you want to do is crash into a moving vehicle while backing up from your driveway onto the road, or running over an object or a living being due to a vehicular malfunction.

Additionally, if the vehicle is turned off and on again in a short period of time, the rearview camera may not appear on the infotainment screen, leaving you to rely on the three mirrors the car has. With modern cars being much larger, a rearview camera and 360-degree view is almost a must for most drivers.
