Another day, another recall, and this time it concerns one of the most popular performance cars to come from Japan - the Toyota GR Supra. Depending on who you ask, there is a lot to like and a few things to hate about the fifth generation of the Japanese performance car, and according to the latest intel, it seems like an early-model Toyota GR Supra may be the wisest sports car purchase

There is a massive recall, which mostly concerns BMW models. It is a well-known fact that Toyota co-developed the Supra with the Bavarian carmaker, and there are a few valid reasons for that, despite JDM fans’ protests.

The recall affects a total of 1,145,385 vehicles, of which 1,469 are Toyota GR Supra models, produced between 2020 and 2022. The issue relates to an electrical hazard during a possible short-circuit. Consequently, the service recalls affect the BMW Z4, which shares a platform with the GR Supra.

This is where it gets interesting:

According to the NHTSA, a total of over 200,000 cars manufactured between 2019 and 2022 are affected, including the BMW Z4, but oddly enough. nothing is said about the 2019 GR Supra. Car Recalls gives more extensive data, according to which cars manufactured between 28 September 2015 and 7 September 2021  are affected, which means the old, E89 generation of the Z4 is also affected.

High probability of electrical fire

Certain Toyota GR Supra model years are recalled alongside many BMW models, for a potential electrical fire hazard

The service recall is about the possibility of water coming into contact with the starter relay, gradually causing corrosion and eventually a short circuit, due to overheating of the electrical connections and starter.

This may cause a difficult engine start or, in the worst-case scenario, cause an electrical fire, which may total the car. The issue can manifest itself when the car is in motion or when it’s stationary, but with the ignition on.

According to the recall, specific information about the recall is given upon request from owners of the affected vehicles. It sounds like a part-replacement scenario. Since these are all BMW parts, the company said that the service recall will be performed in phases due to limited parts availability.
