Tesla Delivers 484,507 Vehicles In Record Breaking Quarter: 490,000 Could Have Happened Were a Ship Not Turned Back From Shanghai To Australia

Tesla has had yet another record-breaking quarter, Q4 2024, with 484,507 deliveries. This could have been 490,000, had there not been a ship from Shanghai to Australia turned back due to a stink bug infestation.

Record Breaking Q4 2023 for Tesla

Tesla released their deliveries this morning, and it turns out, Tesla had yet another record-breaking quarter. Here are the details:

  • Model 3 and Y: 476,777 Produced; 461,538 Deliveries; 2% Leased
  • Other Models: 18,212 Produced; 22,969 Deliveries; 3% Leased
  • Total: 494,989 Produced; 484,507 Delivered; 2% Leased

It's interesting to note that this is the lowest lease rate Tesla has ever had, which means more, and more people are buying cars, either outright or through loans.

The point of sale tax credit should be going in effect today, which means an instant $7,500 rebate off of qualified Tesla vehicles.

Of note, is that Tesla did not break out the Cybertruck in a separate category. There is a good reason for this, as the Cybertruck has only been doing deliveries for one month. Probably around 300 to 500 have been delivered at this time.

As future models get released, I would hope that Tesla breaks down deliveries by every single vehicle category and doesn't group them.

Ship Turned Back Due To Stink Bugs

It was interesting to read that there was a ship traveling to Australia with about 5-6 thousand Tesla vehicles, but it was turned back due to a stink bug infestation late in the quarter.

According to Gary Black, Tesla could have delivered over 490,000 vehicles had this ship not been turned back. This is the first time I've heard of a ship of Tesla vehicles being turned around like this.

Production of around 495,000 was ahead of most people's expectations, and deliveries exceeded expectations by about 4,000.

What remains is what Tesla will do about the price disparity now that the Model 3 RWD and Model 3 Long Range have lost the U.S. $7,500 tax credit...

Since 2008, Tesla's deliveries by year have looked like this:

  • 2008-2011: 2.2K
  • 2012: 2.7K
  • 2013: 22.5K
  • 2014: 31.7K
  • 2015: 50.6K
  • 2016: 76.2K
  • 2017: 101.3K
  • 2018: 245.2K
  • 2019: 367.5K
  • 2020: 499.6K
  • 2021: 936.2K
  • 2022: 1.31M
  • 2023: 1.81M

It's interesting to visualize the growth of Tesla, since 2016 with this delivery by quarter graph. The compact car is going to dwarf all of these lines, here, later this decade.

Not only that, the Model Y is the worldwide king in sales right now. Tesla is still a company in its infancy!
