Since Tesla launched the Cybertruck, a common complaint among owners has been water entering the truck bed through the tonneau cover.
Despite numerous complaints, Tesla has refused to address the issue and has instead responded that the cover was not designed to be completely waterproof.
This has led to frustration, as owners often find their vault flooded after rain or a car wash.
However, after 3.5 years, Tesla is finally listening to its customers and rolling out a solution to the tonneau cover's excessive water ingress issue.
The first person to report this was Sheen, a Cybertruck owner from Texas, who has dealt with a leaky tonneau cover for some time.
He contacted Tesla service, and to his surprise, the company fixed the issue by simply adding a foam seal to the upper tonneau applique.
After the repair, Sheen shared his experience on the Cybertruck Owners Only Facebook group.
He writes…
“FYI. Tesla service center now will apply foam seals to prevent tonneau leaking.”
Below his post, Sheen shared a picture of his Cybertruck bed showing water streaks caused by the leak before it was repaired.
More importantly, He also shared the service note written by a Tesla employee after the repair.
The service note reads…
“Description Of Work
Concern: Customer states: Excessive water ingress into bed. Photos attached.
Repair Notes:
The technician inspected the vehicle and verified excessive water entering the truck bed, with the tonneau cover not operating as expected.
The cause was inadequate sealing on the upper tonneau applique. The technician applied sealing foam to the applique and tested to confirm that water ingress had been resolved. The repair was validated with no further leaks detected.
Correction: Test To Confirm Water Ingress No Longer Present
Correction Diagnosis: Water Ingress/Leak - Interior
Correction Applique - Upper - Tonneau (Long Range) - Remove and Install.”
Given that many Cybertruck owners are facing tonneau water ingress issues, it’s good to see Tesla addressing the problem by simply applying a foam sealant to the upper tonneau applique.
What is even better is that we can see on the service note that Tesla performed this repair for free under the basic vehicle warranty.
Additionally, the service note also shows the minimum work and parts needed to stop the water leak.
Tesla service writes…
“Parts Replaced or Added

This is wonderful news; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners continue to voice their frustration with Tesla.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, David Hall, hopes that Tesla will redesign the Cybertruck tonneau cover to prevent this issue from happening in the first place, rather than fixing the problem after it occurs.
David writes…
“I prefer Tesla to fix the flawed design.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Allen Padlock, says he is frustrated with how Tesla describes customer complaints.
Allen writes…
“I really wish Tesla would stop using the 'customer states' phrase. It sounds like the customer is making things up, and it suggests it's the customer’s fault if nothing is actually wrong. They should just state the concern and leave it at that.”
A third Cybertruck owner, Erik Beringer, writes…
“I love my truck, but it kills me to think Elon Musk can land a rocket on a dime but can't figure out how to keep the cargo area from getting wet.”
Overall, even with the new fix, a lot of Cybertruck owners remain frustrated with the tonneau cover design. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.

Cybertruck completely revolutionized trucks. Radically different and vast amount of changes. Of course there were some tweaks needing to be made. The unspoken is none of them have been major. All easy fixes compared to other major brands and legacy manufacturers having catastrophic engine and drive drain failures.
