A Cybertruck owner from Colorado says he lives in a canyon and has to drive across a narrow dirt road to reach his house.

After the latest Tesla Full Self-Driving software update (version 14), he shares that his Cybertruck can now autonomously navigate the narrow dirt road.

This was all well and good; however, he’s now facing an unexpected issue with his truck involving turkeys.

The Cybertruck owner says there is a large flock of wild turkeys in his area, and the FSD software doesn’t know how to handle them.

Thankfully, the truck comes to a complete stop if the turkeys block the road. This is again very good; however, the problem begins after this point.

With the truck stopped, the flock of turkeys simply continues obstructing the road.

FSD can’t gently encourage them to move aside, so without the owner manually driving, the vehicle would remain stuck on the road.

The Cybertruck owner shares he gets so frustrated with the turkeys that he sometimes ponders maybe if he should get a “locally sourced” turkey dinner for Thanksgiving.

The Cybertruck owner shared his amusing story on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.

He writes…

Turkeys… the bane of FSD

There is a large flock of wild turkeys in the canyon where I live.

With V14, FSD can now confidently navigate our single-lane road. However, it has a lot of trouble with the turkeys.

Usually, we just slow down, and they get out of the way as we gradually pass. But with FSD, it stops and won’t proceed.

The turkeys then just wander back and forth.

I would never have gotten anywhere without taking over. Not the end of the world, but it does make one willing to obtain a more locally sourced Thanksgiving dinner.”

Below his post, the Cybertruck owner shared a video of him driving down a dirt road, with a curious flock of turkeys blocking the way.

Tesla’s full self-driving software comes to a complete stop. However, the turkeys, instead of making way for the Cybertruck, simply keep walking back and forth across the narrow road.

FSD just stands still, and the Cybertruck owner has to take over and manually drive to slowly inch towards the turkeys to persuade them to leave the road.

In the video, you can see the turkeys only step aside to let the approaching Cybertruck pass when the truck gets closer, with the owner driving manually.

Admittedly, this isn’t a big deal; the Cybertruck owner just had to drive manually for a few seconds.

However, where this becomes important is in the context of Tesla’s aspiration to launch the first nationwide robotaxi service.

Robotaxis Roadblocks

Tesla plans to deploy millions of robotaxis that the company hopes will transform the appearance of the roads.

Elon Musk even says that once robotaxis become widely accepted, it will be illegal for humans to drive.

This is an ambitious vision, which explains why Tesla is valued at over 1 trillion dollars and has a valuation greater than all other automotive companies combined.

However, this incident raises questions about how Tesla will address edge cases like this and whether the robotaxi future, where all vehicles are self-driving, is as close as Tesla believes.
