Lance, a Cybertruck owner from Washington, reports that he has identified and implemented an easy fix for a persistent charging-speed issue.
His fix was simply to clean the charging port.
He mentions that over the past month, he has had trouble physically connecting the charger to his vehicle, taking two to three tries to plug it in.
And once the charger is connected, he was getting very slow charging speeds.
During this period, he checked everything to confirm his Cybertruck was functioning correctly, but eventually concluded that cleaning the charging port might be the answer.
Finally, Lance bought CRC Electric Parts Cleaner and generously applied it to the charge port.
Afterward, he used a Q-tip to remove dust and rust from the charging pins. Lo and behold, his vehicle began charging perfectly, and plugging in the charging cable became effortless.
Now the happy Cybertruck owner is sharing his tips with fellow owners on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He writes…
“Clean your charge port!
Having problems plugging in your charger? How about at a supercharger; do you have to try multiple times to get it to connect?
How about your charging speeds; are they sometimes way too low?
A likely cause of your issue is dust and corrosion buildup in your charge port.
This issue has baffled me for about a month now because I was experiencing all of these problems randomly.
I blamed everything else. Finally, I bought a can of CRC Electric Parts Cleaner and applied it liberally to my charge port.
Then I used several Q-tips to scrub and remove the dirt.
All of the issues mentioned above have been solved, so far.”
This is certainly an interesting way to address a slow-charging issue; however, while it has been successful for Lance, other Cybertruck owners should exercise caution if they choose to try it themselves.
First, Lance did not rinse the charge port with water; instead, he used an electrical component cleaner designed for this purpose.
Unlike water, the cleaner Lance used is a fast-evaporating, non-chlorinated solvent that dissipates quickly and leaves no residue, eliminating the need to wipe or rinse afterward.
This approach helps keep the charge port dry and reduces the risk of electrical shorts during charging.
However, even with electrical component cleaners, Cybertruck owners should take safety precautions, as inhaling these volatile chemicals can be dangerous.
When handling these products, owners should use appropriate face and mouth protection and perform the procedure in a well-ventilated area.
The third issue is that the Cybertruck has vehicle-to-grid capabilities, meaning the charge port is used not only to receive power into the batteries but also to export power to the grid.
The Cybertruck can deliver 11.5 kW of continuous power at 240 V, making cleaning the charge port as dangerous as cleaning the main electrical line that powers a home.
There is so much power that can come out of a Cybertruck charging port that it would be better for owners dealing with a charging issue to take their vehicles to a Tesla service center.
There, professionals can investigate the issue and ensure proper safety protocols are in place.
Another thing to consider is that cleaning the charge port pins might be only a short-term fix. There may be an issue with the charge port door that is letting a lot of water and dust inside.
Or the charge port connectors may be rusted, and it may be better to replace the charge port entirely rather than attempting to clean an already failing part.
