New China Numbers Show Giga Shanghai Responsible for More Than Half Of Tesla’s Record Q2 Production

According to China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data, in June, Tesla produced 93,680 vehicles. June’s number pushes Tesla’s Giga Shanghai vehicle production in Q2 to 247,127 vehicles. This amounts to 53% of Tesla’s total production.

Tesla recently posted record-breaking quarterly production numbers. According to the Austin, Texas EV maker, in the quarter starting April 1st and ending June 30th, Tesla produced and delivered 480,000 and 466,000 vehicles, respectively.

These were by far Tesla’s largest quarterly production and delivery numbers. Q2 is up 5% quarter over quarter and is up an impressive 80% year over year. These results have sent Tesla’s stock price sharply upwards and have increased the company’s market cap by $57 billion in a single day.

Tesla’s Q2 performance was impressive however, the Austin Texas EV maker has not broken down the total production and delivery numbers by region. As a result, it is difficult to tell which factories and which regions are leading the charge for Tesla’s growth and which might be lagging.

That’s at least until today. A few hours ago, China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) announced Tesla’s production number for the month of June. According to CPCA, last month, Tesla produced 93,680 vehicles in China.

June number is Tesla’s second-highest China production result next to November 2022 when the EV maker delivered over 100,000 vehicles in a single month. This on its own is impressive, however, when we add Tesla’s China production number in April and May, that’s when Giga Shanghai's impact truly starts to shine.

Tesla produced 75,842 and 77,695 vehicles in April and May, respectively, adding these numbers to June’s results gives us a total China production number of 247,217 vehicles in Q2.

Giga Shanghai’s Q2 production gives the plant an annualized production run rate of close to 1 million vehicles. This is extremely impressive for a plant that only started construction in 2019, however, perhaps even more impressively, Giga Shanghai’s Q2 production accounts for more than 53% of Tesla’s total output in the quarter.

Tesla’s other factories – the Fremont California plant which has more than a decade’s worth of production under its belt; Giga Texas which is the largest building of any kind in the world and Giga Berlin all put together managed to only produce less than half of Tesla’s total vehicle output in the quarter.

For now, Giga Shanghai’s importance to Tesla seems lopsided however, in the long run, Tesla has said all new Gigafactories are designed to have a production capacity of more than a million vehicles, and it suggests that Tesla has a bright future ahead of it when the company ramps Giga Texas and Giga Berlin to Giga Shanghai numbers.

Currently, Tesla is in the process of massively increasing vehicle production in all of the company’s factories across the world and we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the EV maker hits more milestones.
