My big, beautiful GMC Sierra looks great, but the drivetrain is junk.
Shannon Elizabeth (@singegneri) says her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition is not what it appears to be on the outside or inside. It's a great-looking truck and was the most expensive trim level for the Sierra lineup.
Imagine investing in a Sierra Texas Edition with luxurious upgrades like chrome wheels, Bose audio, power sliding rear window, LED cargo bed lighting, and dual-zone climate control. You'd expect to own the most stylish truck on the block. However, the reality is far from the dream, as the drivetrain in the GMC Sierra truck is the weak point.
The 8-speed automatic transmission used in the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Cadillac Escalade, and other models is the problem, and it's a serious issue with the trucks.
The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions. I'll explain more about the lawsuit in this report.
First, here is what Shannon says about her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition truck.
She says, "My truck might look really nice and expensive, but I'm here to tell you, it's the biggest piece of (expletive) I've ever owned in my life."
"And it's also the most expensive, funny enough. Just a warning to all those women and men who want to buy like the Denali's, the Escalades, and everything else."
Shannon replaced her Sierra transmission at 80,000 miles.
"They all have the same transmission as my truck. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition; my transmission went out at 80,000 miles. It was past my warranty, but that's cool."
However, with only 10,000 miles on the new transmission, it has to be replaced again.
"Fast forward. Now we're at 91,000 miles, and it's going out again. That means I have had to take it to the shop again in the last six months to get it diagnosed. And I have to go through the whole process of getting a new transmission again. I will have to replace the transmission twice."
"Explain this to me, GMC. How will you charge people this much money and you have not done anything to your powertrain in years? And, statistically, people are going through transmissions left and right."
"If you want to talk about a money racket. These big beautiful vehicles that are super nice on the inside, and their drivetrain is junk."
Shannon's predicament is a cautionary tale for potential buyers. She's unable to trade in her truck due to its significantly reduced value, which is now less than what she owes. This financial burden forces her to keep a vehicle that runs poorly despite its aesthetic appeal.
She laments, "And to add insult to injury, its market value has plummeted to a point where it's worth less than what I owe. I'm trapped in this predicament, forced to keep a vehicle that's more a liability than an asset. It may look pretty, but it runs like a disaster."
GM faces a class action lawsuit.
A report from Top Class Actions reveals that Shannon's experience is not unique. Many other GMC Sierra truck owners are facing similar transmission issues. The problem is not limited to the Sierra, as the eight-speed automatic transmissions manufactured by GM are used in several other models, including the Chevrolet Silverado, the Yukon, and the Cadillac Escalade.
CBT News says, "The lawsuit claims these vehicles suffer from significant transmission issues, including shuddering and shaking in higher gears and hesitation and lurching in lower gears, even after attempted repairs. Additionally, GM is accused of instructing dealers to reassure customers that these harsh shifts were "normal."
The report says the case involves approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.
The GM truck transmission is failing prematurely.
Additionally, the GM defect transmission class action lawsuit alleges that the defect can cause the transmissions to fail prematurely. The shaking and jerking are caused by internal transmission and/or torque converter issues.
What is the problem?
This internal problem reportedly causes friction on surfaces, hydraulic systems, and gears, preventing the system from functioning properly and causing metal shavings to circulate throughout the transmission.
The GM transmission class action lawsuit says this defect, and the metal shavings circulating, causes damages to the transmission over time and requires components to be replaced.
Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and newer Sierra and Silverado trucks?
Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.
Shannon has a warning for GMC truck buyers.
"So, save your money. Don't buy a GM vehicle," Shannon says as she warns other truck buyers.
The GM defective transmission lawsuit is reportedly scheduled to be reheard in March 2025. Stay tuned.

I recently bought a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 35,580 miles. Almost right away started having a rumbling sound & vibration. Got bad enough going uphill that felt like going over stop sign rumble strips. Dealer mechanic diagnosed that needed tranny fluid flush as had the original incorrect fluid. $441.00 later and 1,000 miles, still has vibration & rumble going downhill or on flat road, city and highway same results, though not as bad as before. Dealer mechanic & service manager think may be bad torque converter but need to do $220.00 diagnostic, then submit results to GM who may, if they chose, to pay for some of it, possibly only 30% or less of an over $3,000.00 torque converter replacement. Good thing I still have my 2012 Silverado with over 180,000 miles I can use while I find a way to get rid of the new to me piece of crap. Thank You GM for your Crappy quality of work, Customer NON-Support, and allowing me to donate money to GM personnel retirement funds!

I've owned GM trucks since I've had my license, nearly 30 years. My newest is a 2017 Silverado 1500 with 121000+ miles. I had the transmission serviced at 75000 thinking I could avoid the issues everyone else was having. I began noticing the erratic shifts/shutter within months. The first transmission went out before 80000 miles. Bought a used one from the junkyard out of a 2018 which was wrecked with only 42000+ miles. It recently went out again and I'm going to replace it with a 6L90 . I hope this one gives me the dependability my others gave me.

We own a 22 Denali 1/2 ton. With 80,000 miles. At 30,000 miles the valve body went out. Again at 80,000 miles. The service advisor stated, we all have a few of the trucks with the same issue. Meaning all the service advisors have a few trucks each. The parts are on back order, the truck has been sitting for three weeks now, with no idea of when the replacement parts will arrive. We should not have stopped driving Ford!!!!

2019 sierra with 85,000 miles. Was having issues with transmission shuddering and banging, etc. Took to dealer with 55,000 miles under warranty to look at. They told me what I was experiencing was normal, but there was a recall to change the fluid. They changed the fluid and issues did get better for a few thousand miles. Issues all came back and now I'm just waiting for everything to fail.

Just had my 2020 Cehy Silverado in the shop last November/December for a couple weeks waiting to get the torque converter replaced saying it was a mechanical failure. Truck didn't have 80000 miles on it when this happened. Was not happy that was already having an issue. Never had an issue when I had a 2014 Toyota Tundra.

When replacing the transmission the first time I would assume the tech flushed out the cooler and lines, and again for the next.If not your are introducing metal from the failed unit to the new unit thus creating failure of the new unit obviously quite faster than the 80k u git out of your original transmission.

I've had a couple of times when the truck shuttered and would not move. After a few moments, it was back to normal. I keep worrying about when will it happen again. I own a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500SLT. It's a great looking truck with all the bells and whistles. I would hate to breakitdown due to this problem with the transmission. Currently have 78,000 miles.

I own a 2019 GMC Sierra Denali. I purchased the truck in November 2019 on my birthday.
I live in Tennessee and took a trip home to North Carolina shortly after purchasing the truck.
After visiting family in NC, I began my trip back home in TN. While driving through the mountains, I was attempting to pass a slower vehicle going uphill. As I began accelerating to pass the vehicle the transmission suddenly down shifted very hard and the truck began losing speed.
After letting up off the accelerator for about 10 to 15 seconds and after resumming acceleration, the transmission began to shift erratically before resuming normal shifting. Hoping that it something minor, I continued my journey home.
After returning home, I took to the internet to see if there was any recalls for what I had experienced and boy did I get an eye opener on a GM forum regarding issues others have had with their transmissions.
I made an appointment at the dealership where I purchased the truck to have it checked. I explained my situation to the technician. I also asked the technician about some of the other issues I had read about but, got no direct answer. The technician said they would check the truck and test drive it to see if they could get it to replicate the issue I had explained.
After they were done with inspecting and driving the truck, I was told that they couldn't get the truck to replicate the issue I had explained to them and that GM was aware of issues customers were having with this particular transmission and recommended that some new type of transmission fluid had been recommended and the transmission
fluid had been changed and that the truck had to be driven a certain way until the truck got used to my driving pattern.
A few days later while driving the truck, while stopping at a traffic light, the truck began to shudder and jerk foward and as I began to accelerate from the stop, it continued to jerk forward before resuming to normal shifting.
After another failed trip to the dealership with no definitive solution, I decided to just take my chances with the truck and hoped the transmission wouldn't go out like some of the other customers I had read about on different forums regarding this particular transmission, with some customers saying their transmissions went out while still under warranty and GM would not cover the cost to replace it.
I currently still own my truck and the same issues with my transmission still occurs.
Hopefully this lawsuit will wake GM up and make them admit they have known for years the problems customers have had with these transmissions.

My 2016 chevy silverado 1500 transmission wouldn't shift into reverse. The Chevy Dealer wanted $165 to diagnose. Diagnosis about a problem they already know about. I paid it. They came back with "we ne to drop the transmission cover to verify" They wanted another $900 for that. My truck had a separate extended warranty and ended up paying for a rebuilt transmission. It has only been 16k miles and it does not feel right. It jerks alot when it shifts.
