My GMC Sierra Texas Edition Looks Great, But With Only 91,000 Miles, I’ve Replaced the Transmission Twice, And the Drivetrain Is Junk

Here is a GMC Sierra owner who has a warning for truck buyers. Her Sierra truck looks great on the outside and inside, but underneath, it has problems with the transmission. Is this an isolated problem with GM? Is it just older models or new trucks also?

My big, beautiful GMC Sierra looks great, but the drivetrain is junk.

Shannon Elizabeth (@singegneri) says her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition is not what it appears to be on the outside or inside. It's a great-looking truck and was the most expensive trim level for the Sierra lineup.

Imagine investing in a Sierra Texas Edition with luxurious upgrades like chrome wheels, Bose audio, power sliding rear window, LED cargo bed lighting, and dual-zone climate control. You'd expect to own the most stylish truck on the block. However, the reality is far from the dream, as the drivetrain in the GMC Sierra truck is the weak point.

The 8-speed automatic transmission used in the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Cadillac Escalade, and other models is the problem, and it's a serious issue with the trucks.

The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions. I'll explain more about the lawsuit in this report.

First, here is what Shannon says about her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition truck.

She says, "My truck might look really nice and expensive, but I'm here to tell you, it's the biggest piece of (expletive) I've ever owned in my life."

"And it's also the most expensive, funny enough. Just a warning to all those women and men who want to buy like the Denali's, the Escalades, and everything else."

Shannon replaced her Sierra transmission at 80,000 miles.

"They all have the same transmission as my truck. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition; my transmission went out at 80,000 miles. It was past my warranty, but that's cool."

However, with only 10,000 miles on the new transmission, it has to be replaced again.

"Fast forward. Now we're at 91,000 miles, and it's going out again. That means I have had to take it to the shop again in the last six months to get it diagnosed. And I have to go through the whole process of getting a new transmission again. I will have to replace the transmission twice."

"Explain this to me, GMC. How will you charge people this much money and you have not done anything to your powertrain in years? And, statistically, people are going through transmissions left and right."

"If you want to talk about a money racket. These big beautiful vehicles that are super nice on the inside, and their drivetrain is junk."

Shannon's predicament is a cautionary tale for potential buyers. She's unable to trade in her truck due to its significantly reduced value, which is now less than what she owes. This financial burden forces her to keep a vehicle that runs poorly despite its aesthetic appeal.

She laments, "And to add insult to injury, its market value has plummeted to a point where it's worth less than what I owe. I'm trapped in this predicament, forced to keep a vehicle that's more a liability than an asset. It may look pretty, but it runs like a disaster."

GM faces a class action lawsuit.

A report from Top Class Actions reveals that Shannon's experience is not unique. Many other GMC Sierra truck owners are facing similar transmission issues. The problem is not limited to the Sierra, as the eight-speed automatic transmissions manufactured by GM are used in several other models, including the Chevrolet Silverado, the Yukon, and the Cadillac Escalade.

CBT News says, "The lawsuit claims these vehicles suffer from significant transmission issues, including shuddering and shaking in higher gears and hesitation and lurching in lower gears, even after attempted repairs. Additionally, GM is accused of instructing dealers to reassure customers that these harsh shifts were "normal."

The report says the case involves approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.

The GM truck transmission is failing prematurely.

Additionally, the GM defect transmission class action lawsuit alleges that the defect can cause the transmissions to fail prematurely. The shaking and jerking are caused by internal transmission and/or torque converter issues.

What is the problem?

This internal problem reportedly causes friction on surfaces, hydraulic systems, and gears, preventing the system from functioning properly and causing metal shavings to circulate throughout the transmission.

The GM transmission class action lawsuit says this defect, and the metal shavings circulating, causes damages to the transmission over time and requires components to be replaced.

Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and newer Sierra and Silverado trucks?

Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.

Shannon has a warning for GMC truck buyers.

"So, save your money. Don't buy a GM vehicle," Shannon says as she warns other truck buyers.

The GM defective transmission lawsuit is reportedly scheduled to be reheard in March 2025. Stay tuned.

And I don't have no slipping no jerking or any any vibration!! And my truck is at 152,340 miles on it!! For some reason GM TRANMISSION RUNS DIRTY FOR SOME REASON!! People I know change their tranmission fluid every 30k to 50k they all have problems!!! Jerking, Slipping, vibration! As for me, I don't have any of those problems. And you probably think I'm bullshitting, but I am not!

Have a 2018 Silverado Z71. Had to replace torque converter at 50,000 miles. Luckily noticed it slipping slightly before it failed. Transmission shop told me it's pretty common and that most people don't catch it early enough and it leads to total transmission failure.

2018 yukon..bought it new, just turned 100k. Yesterday. Going in next week for it's 2nd new transmission after overheating again first one at 70k miles. Lifter in the motor dropped at 90k miles. So all in 100k miles I've put 2 transmissions, had the motor done, water pump, starter, 2 tpms sensors and 3 batteries. oh and did I mention the air compressor is going out for the rear suspension? I have immaculate service records...sucks, it's so good lookin and it's my favorite vehicle to everyday drive I've owned...when it's actually on the road

Shaking shifting hard.

My truck has been in the shop 6 times and dealship hasn't fixed the problems.

Had issues with my 2016 GMC as well.

I will not buy a GMC again

GMC dealerships constantly lie and dont do a good job.

I m done with GMC products. Cheaply made

Wow, I just bought a 2021 Sierra and if you don't let the truck warm up before driving you can feel the transmission shifting from low to second real hard but if you let it warm up you can't tell anything is wrong. I sure hope they get a recall going. I don't have but 26K on this truck and I paid more for it than I did my first home!! Looking for some help GMC!

Around 20k miles the tranny started to shudder. It was most noticeable at steady highway speeds mimicking a bent rim or alignment issue. The dealer charged me $350 for a tranny flush under a tbs bulletin. I was charged despite my arguing it's still under warranty(10 year/100k). They said if it has issues again, they would cover it under the still in effect warranty. At 45k miles, I'm starting to notice the shudder again...

Fat_Alvin_Bragg (not verified)    January 11, 2025 - 11:17AM

My 2016 denali transmission shuddered at 65K. I wasnt sure what it was cuz it felt kind of like running over a washboard in the road. By the time I got it to service it was just out of warranty and cost me over $700 bucks for a fluid change. My brother works for gm and sent me the service bulletin and I was pissed to hear they knew about the shudder for some time. I sold/traded her in w/147K for 14K on a 2025 GMC Denali. It's nice as well but the tilt steering is a real turd. It's electronic and slow as **** to lift when I want to exit the vehicle. I only got 5K on new truck since Oct. 24 but so far the tilt mechanism is my only bitch. I went with 5.3 liter again as well because it is bullet proof. I drive like a maniac and I get about the same mileage as the 2016. 16.5 mag. I was going to get AT4X but the 24 model was more than denali and had 6.2 but horrible mileage and road noise. At 60 yrs old I want to hear my tunes not pavement roar.GM needs to get their s*** right. Paying 70-80k for a truck the damn thing SHOULD never have issues when maintained. 12-15 yrs should be the norm even with a crazy bastard like myself driving.

Ryan Hobbs (not verified)    January 11, 2025 - 12:15PM

My name is Ryan Hobbs, an I own a 2014 Silverado 1500 4x4 with the 8l80 transmission an I have had to replace my transmission at 91000 miles. It didn't just go out. I was on my way home from work on Thanksgiving morning couple years back and I was traveling around 55mph going down the highway an suddenly the transmission suddenly down shifted to 1st year throwing me in to the steering wheel and locking the tires up then going into a free roll as it busted all the gears in the transmission and then the new one I had to put in haven't even put 100miles on the new transmission an it got locked in gear so no matter what gear you put it in even R it would go forward and wouldn't shift gears. So I can again had to change it out as well. I haven't been able to test out the new transmission due to a valve seat fell on the piston due to a collapsed lifter. As well with the same truck iv had intermittent brake issues which cases me to having issues stopping sep 10 2019 that caused me to not be able to stop as well as loss of power steering that caused me to get involved in an accident due to not being able to stop or turn quick enough to avoid the accadent no matter how hard I tried. Gm denies my claim even though their is a recall for both them issues as well as my aibags never deployed and my seatbelt pretentioner broke in which also has recalls on. Still GM has denied to assist me in fixing my truck after 2 years of fighting with them to have a so called 3rd party come pull data from my truck, but the 3rd party investigation didn't go so well as I had to pay to have my truck towed to a dealership so the could do their investigation but said they couldntnt retrieve any data due to water damage due to my driver side door being messed up an rain water got inside my truck and caused things to get wet so was said any how.
I also has a 2016 Silverado 1500 4x4 with the 8l80 transmissionan I had the transmission in it replaced about 80,000miles as well which at the dealership costed me over $5,000.00 to have replaced. So I figured I'd just take the loss an get rid of that truck b4 I started having more of problems with it like I do with my 2014. IV had nothing but nightmare with my 2014 since I bought it. IV had intermittent misfires on cylinders, wipers work intermittently, had guess boxes changed out 4 times an one actually shorted out an caught a fire. Luckily I was out side doing yard work when it started smoking or it would have burnt the whole truck to the ground. Also had issues with my third brake light randomly coming on after being parked for bout an hour or so and just stay on till battery ran dead, ac/HVAC condenser started leaking, as well as with the 2016 I had, fuel pumps, water pumps. IV had nothing but issues after issues with both trucks and they were the same body style trucks, different models though as the 2014 is a WT2 model (which I bought used with around 50k miles for around 26k) an the 2016 was the LT model (got new around 40k). So in my opinion I'd stay away from any gm truck from 2014 to 2019 gm trucks as they are complete junk.

Nate R (not verified)    January 11, 2025 - 12:19PM

I had a 2016 1500 silverado LTZ(5.3L, 8spd transmissin). In 2021 I traded it in at 170k, for a 2020 1500 trailboss (5.3L, 6 spd trans)custom. Hadn't event reached 100k, and already lamenting my decision. Even now in 2025, and 127k, I'd go back to that 2016 truck in a heartbeat. It's absolutely outrageous what they charge for full size trucks, but don't stand behind their products. Look at other mfrs, with 100k mile warranties on proven drivetrains. Back when I first started working, I was taught that when you do a job- I don't care if you're a laborer cleaning and sweeping- you do it to the best of your ability because your name is on it.
As someone who knows enough about cars, has a 60s sedan, and something from every decade since- this is NOT what they should sound, feel, or be like. And being lied to at service is a shame. As a multi billion $ corp, you should be able to source, engineer, build quality parts to justify their pricing.
This IS and SHOULD be embarassing.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado.
Transmission replaced at 160,000 for the same problem. Quite possibly could be the second replacement.

We had both the 2014 and 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pick up and it would shift hard from first to second gear the whole time we had both vehicles.

Same issues here. 2018 chevy silverado. Replaced the transmission at 110,000 miles. Currently at 141,000 it's starting to act up again.

Turning my GMC Yukon XL in for transmission work Monday this is the 3rd time (2nd time on my replaced transmission) This is ridiculous for a “Luxury vehicle”.

Hello, I purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Z71, 8 speed transmission and have had issues since day one. The truck when put into gear and apply a little gas to drive will jump out of gear then slam back into gear. It has very erratic shifting jumping in and out of gear. The dealership under warranty did a transmission flush and replaced the fluid with the updated Mobil One fluid but the truck still acts up. The dealership shows me a service bulletin stating the issues that I’m experiencing are normal! Go figure! The truck is now out of warranty and I worry every day that it is going to fail before General Motors decides to make it right or the courts make the repair the truck they knowingly sold with transmission issues. Just hoping that my truck hangs in there until the issue is resolved. Not sure what to do or if I have to join the class action suit or it will include all the effected trucks. Please advise I don’t know, not sure if I will ever buy another GM product Scott Shepherd down-out@msn. Com or 336 549 3966

I have a 2018 GMC Sierra SLT with all the bells and whistles. I paid $53K for the truck new and it now has 74 thousand miles on it. My transmission starting lurching at lower speeds around 69 thousand miles, and GM has diagnosed the problem as a failing torque converter. Unfortunately this problem started shortly after my extended warranty had expired. I will not buy anther GMC truck again.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado LT. My transmission failed and left me stranded at 87,000 miles 2 year's ago. I was so furious I was ready to sell the truck I'd dreamed of owning. Instead of putting in a brand new transmission that would end up doing the same thing I had a stage II transmission upgrade done on the rebuild. 35 year GM fan but I'll never buy one again, I should have spent the money and bought a Toyota. Shame on you General Motors.

I have a 2019 GMC Sierra with 65,000 miles. It has been doing the shuttering and bumping at low speeds. At higher speeds there hasn’t been any issues.
