My GMC Sierra Texas Edition Looks Great, But With Only 91,000 Miles, I’ve Replaced the Transmission Twice, And the Drivetrain Is Junk

Here is a GMC Sierra owner who has a warning for truck buyers. Her Sierra truck looks great on the outside and inside, but underneath, it has problems with the transmission. Is this an isolated problem with GM? Is it just older models or new trucks also?

My big, beautiful GMC Sierra looks great, but the drivetrain is junk.

Shannon Elizabeth (@singegneri) says her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition is not what it appears to be on the outside or inside. It's a great-looking truck and was the most expensive trim level for the Sierra lineup.

Imagine investing in a Sierra Texas Edition with luxurious upgrades like chrome wheels, Bose audio, power sliding rear window, LED cargo bed lighting, and dual-zone climate control. You'd expect to own the most stylish truck on the block. However, the reality is far from the dream, as the drivetrain in the GMC Sierra truck is the weak point.

The 8-speed automatic transmission used in the GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Cadillac Escalade, and other models is the problem, and it's a serious issue with the trucks.

The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions. I'll explain more about the lawsuit in this report.

First, here is what Shannon says about her 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition truck.

She says, "My truck might look really nice and expensive, but I'm here to tell you, it's the biggest piece of (expletive) I've ever owned in my life."

"And it's also the most expensive, funny enough. Just a warning to all those women and men who want to buy like the Denali's, the Escalades, and everything else."

Shannon replaced her Sierra transmission at 80,000 miles.

"They all have the same transmission as my truck. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra Texas Edition; my transmission went out at 80,000 miles. It was past my warranty, but that's cool."

However, with only 10,000 miles on the new transmission, it has to be replaced again.

"Fast forward. Now we're at 91,000 miles, and it's going out again. That means I have had to take it to the shop again in the last six months to get it diagnosed. And I have to go through the whole process of getting a new transmission again. I will have to replace the transmission twice."

"Explain this to me, GMC. How will you charge people this much money and you have not done anything to your powertrain in years? And, statistically, people are going through transmissions left and right."

"If you want to talk about a money racket. These big beautiful vehicles that are super nice on the inside, and their drivetrain is junk."

Shannon's predicament is a cautionary tale for potential buyers. She's unable to trade in her truck due to its significantly reduced value, which is now less than what she owes. This financial burden forces her to keep a vehicle that runs poorly despite its aesthetic appeal.

She laments, "And to add insult to injury, its market value has plummeted to a point where it's worth less than what I owe. I'm trapped in this predicament, forced to keep a vehicle that's more a liability than an asset. It may look pretty, but it runs like a disaster."

GM faces a class action lawsuit.

A report from Top Class Actions reveals that Shannon's experience is not unique. Many other GMC Sierra truck owners are facing similar transmission issues. The problem is not limited to the Sierra, as the eight-speed automatic transmissions manufactured by GM are used in several other models, including the Chevrolet Silverado, the Yukon, and the Cadillac Escalade.

CBT News says, "The lawsuit claims these vehicles suffer from significant transmission issues, including shuddering and shaking in higher gears and hesitation and lurching in lower gears, even after attempted repairs. Additionally, GM is accused of instructing dealers to reassure customers that these harsh shifts were "normal."

The report says the case involves approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.

The GM truck transmission is failing prematurely.

Additionally, the GM defect transmission class action lawsuit alleges that the defect can cause the transmissions to fail prematurely. The shaking and jerking are caused by internal transmission and/or torque converter issues.

What is the problem?

This internal problem reportedly causes friction on surfaces, hydraulic systems, and gears, preventing the system from functioning properly and causing metal shavings to circulate throughout the transmission.

The GM transmission class action lawsuit says this defect, and the metal shavings circulating, causes damages to the transmission over time and requires components to be replaced.

Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and newer Sierra and Silverado trucks?

Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.

Shannon has a warning for GMC truck buyers.

"So, save your money. Don't buy a GM vehicle," Shannon says as she warns other truck buyers.

The GM defective transmission lawsuit is reportedly scheduled to be reheard in March 2025. Stay tuned.

I have a 2018 with 83000 miles, this truck was built in Mexico. It has shifted had from 1st to 2nd for as long as I can remember. The dealer retaught the electronic valvebody 3 times, changed fluid once, and told me I'll have to live with it. The last word from dealer was the hard shifting was normal, it is better than slipping.

2014 new body style silverado 1500 4x4 transmission replaced at 170k miles. I replaced it with a new nonrefurbished transmission at the cost of $5700. I got a 100k mile warranty.

2017 GMC sierra Denali - Had my transmission replaced @ 81k miles. Heading to the shop again tomorrow for the same issues @ 106k miles.

My truck is a 2014 but has the same issues. Trans has been replaced twice as well.
I agree the truck looks great, but have had to put money back "just in case" of another trans failure. It's like a bad relationship that you know is wrong. Beautiful on the outside, but know deep down that they are going to hurt you.

2019 silverado at 60000 miles had to have transmission flushed due to shuttering and hard shifting. Was told that it was due to the fluid they used at the factory was not lasting as long as they thought it would. Translation...they used cheap crap on $60000 vehicle. Time will tell if the transmission fails.

I ha e a 2028 no problems yet . I read up on the problems and from everything I read you will find a better transmission in the aftermarket that has corrected GMC effed transmission look for one built with sonnax parts.

I have 2018 Silverado lt 5.3 with 63k miles. Trading it in at 100k if it makes it that far my mechanic said he works on ford's the least.

This makes me want to reconsider buying a 2025 2500HD and just do the minor body work my 2001 1500HD needs. The 6.0 motor and trans have had zero issues through 150k.

2018 Silverado 1500 - 8l90 transmission;
Valve body started failing at around
98,000mi. GM dealer diagnosed the problem and recommended a complete transmission replacement for $6000.

I had a 2018 gmc Denali, traded it in with 67k and never had any problems with it. Even after towing an enclosed 24ft trailer full over 15k miles. I traded it in for a 2023 GMC at4. So far no problems. Regular maintenance is the key to having little to no problems. I changed the oil every 5k and kept the engine clean and air filter changed. If she had that many problems her maintenance schedule should be looked at.

If your paying for it put of your pocket look in the aftermarket you will get a better transmission than the garbage from GMC. Do a little research look for ones that have sonnax or sonax parts not sure which spelling is correct. The aftermarket finds the problems and corrects them gmc just keeps putting out trash. Had I known about their transmission problems I would have kept my charger it had a Mercedes transmission.

Erik (not verified)    January 8, 2025 - 8:49AM

The old ones are not junk. Find a GMT400 with a SBC or BBC with the 4L80E trans. Very reliable. I have two of them, never had drive/power train issues.

I bought a 2017 Silverado in July of 2024 with 45,000 miles on it. It's got less than 60 on it now and my transmission is out. This is ridiculous. I paid 30,000 for my truck and haven't really gotten to enjoy it for the transmission problems. GM needs to recall these pieces of shit and make it right with their customers. I will never buy GM again if this problem isn't fixed.

2016 GMC SIERRA same issue with 8L90 transmission I need to replace soon and wnt to add my name in lawsuit. Looking forward to March 2025

I have a 2016 GMC Sierra SLT 8 SPD auto. Shuddering was noticed after 40,000. GM service informed me of the issue. I had GM service to change the trans fluid and filter to mobile one synthetic. GM changed the fluid again at 75,000. Still experiencing slow down shifts, jerks, and shuddering. The info I've received is GM blames mobile one. Mobile One did not design or manufacture the transmission. GM manufactured the transmission and is responsible.

Wish I would have done my homework, have my 2023 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD 50,000 miles in the shop at the dealership for the same exact issue. Issues with the transmission valve body with NO replacement parts to be found nationwide. So waiting on a new transmission. Luckily it’s still covered under warranty. But expect the same issue with the new transmission. Appears to be an ongoing issue with GM.

My 2016 GMC with a 5.3 engine and 8-speed transmission shifts hard at times Currently 96000 mi Dealers say it's fine since 20000 mi I can not afford a new one anymore. Just hoping they come up with a fair plan for their customers.

Mark (not verified)    January 8, 2025 - 7:01PM

2016 silverado with the six speed transmission. First one died 100 miles after warranty expired, 100k miles. Approx 100k miles later, after warranty expires another transmission. GMC is a big disappointment on this. They have known too long about this issue and seem to do nothing to correct the quality

1/2 ton chevys are junk, Suburbans and tahoes also, been that way since 2008. If you want a good Chevy you gotta get a 2500 or bigger. Ever since they started deactivating cylinders on there engines to comply with the epa they turned to junk. Everything the government touches turns to junk

william Janssen (not verified)    January 8, 2025 - 8:28PM

2019 brought it brand new. A few days after the transmission would bang when shifting. Dealer changed fluid but it was never right. Then at 60k the torque converter went. It is still banging with74k on it now.

My 2001 gmc needed 2 starters 2 distributor insulation on the air-conditioned lines and the block changed all before 18,000 miles and 2 tranmission rebuilds

2020 silverado 5.3 l w 26000 miles going in for first visit with slipping at times in trans, chexk engine light, leaking rear window, not from any damage

Pierre Guay (not verified)    January 8, 2025 - 11:46PM

My GM dealer(Nurse Chev in Whitby Ontario Canada) says the hesitation in my 8 speed trany is normal.
I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!!!
They're not doing anything about it.
They probably gonna wait until the warranty runs out.
2021 with 62000 kms on it.

2016 cheay suburban 80,000 miles had to replace transmission ya gmc needs to be held accountable this is unacceptable

I have a 2017 Chevy Tahoe 4wd, I'm so mad I can't see straight. My 6spd transmission just went out again. Last one was put in 3yrs and 3mths ago. Of course GM only has a 3yr,100,000mile warranty and I'm 3 months out of warranty time, no where close to the 100,000mile. Like I said last one was 3yr 3mths, and in all it's the 4th transmission since new in 2017. It's completely a huge joke. Last one installed cost around $8000, and now need a new one again.a little over 3yrs. I don't tow anything, hardly ever even have it in 4wd so it's not abused at all. I'm a huge Chevy guy, even race Chevy cars , but this is completely making me rethink the bowtie, think I'm gonna see what RAM has, it's a joke.

Shaggy (not verified)    January 9, 2025 - 6:19AM

I have a 2020 Silverado LT Trail Boss with the 10-speed transmission and it had to get a transmission @ 75,000 miles. It sat in the shop over 2 months because of GM's strike and the transmission was on back order. Chevrolet never would help me and the only reason I got it back as quick as I did was because I called all over the state and found a dealership that had someone back out. The new 1 came with a 100,000 mile warranty and with 117,000 it is already shuttering.
