"How do you know if you bought a lemon?"
That's the equation that Pam Reicks asks on the Toyota RAV4 Owners Facebook page. Let's first take a look at Pam's 2024 RAV4 Woodland's issues, determine if it's a lemon, and then examine the RAV4's reliability.
She says, "I am ashamed to admit that I am disappointed in my new RAV4. I bought a 2024 Woodland Edition in May last year. It's super pretty, but I read that it would get between 35 and 38 mpg; however, the salesman said it would eventually improve after driving it for a long enough time. I have never achieved more than 33.7 mpg, and that was on a downhill route from 5,500 ft elevation to 2,000 ft elevation. I have just over 2,000 miles so far. Is there something wrong with this, or is it the standard?"
In this report, I'll explore Pam's experience with her new RAV4 Woodland, discuss potential issues, and gather user experiences to determine if it's just the Toyota RAV4 Woodland that has issues, or if the quality is slipping across all RAV4 models.
It's a Lot More Than the Fuel Mileage Issues
Pam says, "I bought a Toyota because it's 'the most reliable.' However, when my car had only 12,610 miles, I had all these issues:"
- The brakes were replaced in October 2024 because they were squeaking excessively. The dealer stated that this was not normal and replaced them accordingly.
- Key fob batteries failed and had to be replaced- I know batteries die, but before you even hit a thousand miles? It just seems weird to me. The fob in my mom's 2006 Mercury Mariner has never had a new battery, yet it still works.
- The alarm system randomly activates and cannot be deactivated without inserting the key into the door lock, approximately once a month.
- CarPlay only works intermittently with a 2-year-old Android and an iPhone 16.
- The fuel tank assembly was replaced on June 20, 2025, after gas spilled onto the ground and into the wheel well under the fuel filler.
- The anti-collision system malfunctioned after the fuel tank repair while the vehicle was being driven off the lot.
- My gas mileage monitor now reads at 27 MPG; the service department told me to "keep driving," and it would fix itself. I reset the mileage meter, but it now reads between 22 and 27 after the fuel tank replacement.
- And, unless I coast a lot, it never achieves the 37 mpg average. If it takes extra careful, super ninja-like skill to achieve 37 mpg, they should put that on the spec sheet because it shouldn't be that difficult to reach what they claim to achieve.
What Are Other RAV4 Owners Saying?
Charles Peterson
"I have a '2021 RAV4. Fully loaded. I bought it last year and used it. It's my first Toyota. I haven't had as many issues as you, but I have had these: The liftgate won't open with the buttons or key fob. I had to replace the steel hinges, which cost $120, because they bent."
"If I open the driver's door before turning off the vehicle, it continues to beep forever. After I close the door and then reopen it, the beeping stops."
"The headlights are horrible at night, especially when it's raining. I had to re-aim the fog lights upward, and I replaced the original lights with LEDs."
"To achieve the best mileage, you need to travel at approximately 50 to 55 miles per hour. For instance, traveling on Woodward, I can get 35 miles to the gallon at the speed of a regular ICE vehicle (non-xEV)."
"Have you heard about the lawsuit involving electric hybrid vehicles? The battery connection corrodes after about three winters. To correct this, the entire wiring harness must be replaced. The cost is $6,600, which Toyota states is the owner's responsibility. Initially, the warranty for it was only 40,000 miles, but they did up to 100,000 miles. They did not redesign the wire harness to correct it."
Candace Nicole
"My ‘2021 RAV4 XLE has had similar issues from the start and has been fine overall; sorry to say as good as they are, they just aren't made like they used to be (even the sales mgr I bought mine from said this after the fact, of course)… my brakes squeal like a banshee and always have, I don't think I've ever seen 37 mpg, I do a mix of highway/city driving, I usually hover at 27-29. I have reached 37,000 miles and had to change fob batteries twice already. I also had paint cracks that had to be repaired a year ago(I drove under normal conditions). I can't speak to other concerns as I'm an antique and don't use CarPlay. Some will strongly disagree with my statement above, and that's fine, but my 2016 RAV was a tank compared to my 2021 model. Still, compared to other vehicles, they're good SUVs."
Erica Wright
"I had a 2024 RAV4 XLE Premium that was declared a lemon. To qualify in my state, I had to have the same issue repaired at least three times. I had water damage coming from the roof. Everyone told me it was from the rails, so I went to the dealership, and they told me the rails were fine. I continue to have water damage from the roof from August until November. After the third attempt, I filed a claim with Toyota and the BBB AutoLine. I won my case and received all my money back."
What is a "lemon"?
Nolo Law says, "A car is generally considered a lemon when it has a significant defect that the manufacturer or authorized dealer is unable to repair within a reasonable number of attempts, and the defect substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle. This often falls under state-specific "lemon laws" and typically applies to new or leased vehicles."
Note: Lemon laws vary by state, so it's crucial to check the specific regulations in your location.
Is Pam's 2024 RAV4 Woodland a lemon?
It's unlikely that Pam's RAV4 Woodland is a "lemon." She has experienced multiple issues that the dealer has addressed, and the smartphone pairing issue is a recurring concern with the RAV4, which Toyota is currently addressing. What about Toyota’s overall quality?
Is Toyota's quality slipping?
According to the iSeeCars analysis, the two least reliable Toyota models are the RAV4 Hybrid and Prius Prime.
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - 6.2 / 10
- Toyota Prius Prime - 5.7 / 10
Here are key facts about the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Version.
- Average Lifespan (years): 12.2
- Average Lifespan (miles): 148,119 miles
- Typical Miles Driven per Year: 10,262 miles
- Probability of Reaching 200k Miles: 17.7%
What does Consumer Reports say about the 2024 Toyota RAV4's reliability?
Consumer Reports gives the 2024 RAV4 an 84/100 reliability rating and a 3/5 for owner satisfaction.
They say, "The original Toyota RAV4 pioneered the small, car-based SUV segment in the mid-1990s, and it has continued to set a high standard for the class with each subsequent generation—until now. Today, the RAV4 is no longer among the best in class in our road tests."
They give the 2024 RAV4 low scores for engine noise, ride, and fit and finish.
J.D. Power Dropped Toyota’s quality ranking
Toyota, once the benchmark for reliability, has experienced a significant decline in recent years. According to the recent J.D. Power 2025 Initial Quality Study, Toyota has now fallen below the industry average in vehicle quality rankings.
Conclusion:
So, it's no surprise that Pam is unhappy with her 2024 RAV4 Woodland. She is among many Toyota owners who have experienced the drop in quality.

I own a 2023 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. I had a problem with gas tank not filling completely. Toyota replaced it and is fine now. I had a major breakdown with Infotainment/GPS system. Complete malfunction. Toyota replaced the entire head of system. Now I have problem with Bluetooth connection. Sometimes it connects sometimes it doesn't. They have worked on it more times than I can remember. I filed a Case with Toyota. They had a regional Tech work on it recently. It seemed to work right after that but has now reverted back to sometimes working right. I received a phone call from Toyota Corp Customer Relations last week and they told me that they couldn't do anything more! I guess I just have to live with connect/non connect issue. Toyota seems to deny it is a wide spread problem.

I bought a brand Toyota Camry 2023 in January 2023 in Canada and sold it in 4 months after driving for only Five Hundred (500) KM.
The build quality was below average and the lack of features was frustrating i.e. it didn't even have the blind spot monitor although it was AWD model.
The android auto and charging ports had issues. It kept disconnecting . The air conditioning and heating was also barely satisfactory.
Although I bought the Camry on 7 years financing and I knew I would lose money, but I decided to change the car as I just couldn't live with it for next 7 years.
I had a test drive of RAV4 2023 Gas model. It was even more horrible. The engine was so noisy that it made Camry look like a better choice. The RAV4 had too much body roll for our liking and a very underwhelming/ outdated interior. The other issue is lack of availability and higher interest rates of Toyota vehicles which has direct impact on overall cost to customers.
After driving other vehicles , the Mitsubishi Outlander caught me by surprise. It has such a nice plush interior, very comfortable ride , lots of features and industry 's leading warranty .I got bought it 2 years ago at a lower interest rate than Toyota (Camry and RAV4) and am very happy with my decision. This is true value for money.

I've owned my 2024 rave 4 hybrid since November 2024 and have about 27,000 miles on it. I'm getting just over 42 mpg and I drive what I consider normal...no jack rabbit starts and I keep it under 80 on the freeway. I've had no problem with the car (knock on wood) and plan to keep it till the wheels fall off. I suspect this young lady's car is what we used to call a Friday night special.

I have a 2013 Toyota RAV4 Limited. I have had ZERO issues except for the paint job. They repainted it, and gave me a replacement RAV4 to drive while waiting for them to finish the job. It's so reliable that I bought a 2025 Toyota Crown at the end of last year. Again ZERO problems so far.

I have a 2021 Rav4 Prime SE and it's pretty reliable. It will get anywhere from 30 to 45 MPG when just in hybrid more and will also get up to 40 miles range in EV mode of you stay off the freeway. Thr Rav4 prime is more efficient at highspeed when it's in hybrid mode. I have almost 80,000 miles and don't have any major problems. The car makes a loud foghorn sound if you turn the heater on when starting it up in cold temps. I brought it to the dealer to look at it and it only happens in EV mode so they could reproduce it they wouldn't update the AC firmware. I have a sound coming from one of the rear lift struts for the trunk lid only when it goes down the last 10%. Something is making a noise when coasting and at certain steering angles it makes a knocking noise like the sound the Predator makes whenbit stocks its prey. It went through the stock tires around 20k miles. Other than that my Rav4 Prime has been super reliable I occasionally tow with it also.

I just bought a new 2025 basic RAV4. I’ve been a Toyota customer for my last 6 vehicles of various models. My last was a 2017 RAV4. I never had an issue with that one. I have a 1000 miles on the new one and I’m already disappointed with the quality, the seat mechanism to raise the seat is the cheapest I think they could design and doesn’t always hold so I’m frequently adjusting it and adjusting mirrors while driving, there is only one pocket on the back of the passenger side seat and there is plastic where the gas nozzle is inserted, I live in the northeast, I’m sure it will be a matter of time before it cracks in cold weather. Very disappointed with how cheap Toyota has gotten. Is rather have my 2017 back.

Not sure about quality slipping,
I own 2020 RAV4 hybrid XLE.
Bought it brand new in late 2020.
Have 82K+ on it now. My commute is about 95 -100 miles a day.
So far no major issues.
Yes, the real mpg is less than advertized mpg, but with in a small range. I routinely get 34 to 36 mpg against advertized 38 to 41 mpg but still a considerate saving over 26 to 30 mpg of ICE models. At almost 100 miles a day I fillup once a week.

I purchased a 2019 rav4 xle in Feb of '22. It had 13k on it everything was pristine. I bought a couple different extra services and it was a good thing I did. The interior was cloth, and when I vacuumed it for the first time my sweat dripped on the seat. Low and behold, now there was a stain. Then when it rained after that, rain water would stain the seats. I complained to the dealer, even complained to toyota HQ and their response was, that's the way they are. I started to look at other rav4's, and everyone that I looked at in parking lots of stores all their seats were covered with stains. Fortunately for me, one of the extra things I purchased was ecoblock, which cleans the inside and outside of the car for 6 years. So every 5k I'd change the oil and have them clean the seats. A few months ago I started noticing rips in the seats and I bought a 200.dollar set of faux leather covers that are the same colors as the cloth. Other than that the car has been good to us. I've replaced the tires at 40k I did front brakes at 56 k and now have 60k. The car is very noisy while driving, Toyota could have done a better job of insulating under the carpets under the dashboard, but overall it's good. Usually get 32-37 mpg, does very good on the highway. The dealer emails me every week to try and get me to trade it in,I just delete it every week. Not buying a newer one, no thanks.

Bought my wife a brand new 2023 RAV4 Limited and she thinks the car is trying to kill her. The first problems showed up in the large display. If she put it in reverse the backup camera would display, but if you changed gears to Park, Drive, etc. the display still showed the backup camera. This was very distracting to her and had to pull over and shutdown the car and restart it. The Toyota service department looked into it and couldn’t find anything wrong. We took it in for regular service and it did this while she was backing out to leave, so she had the service advisor come see and he confirmed the display didn’t change from the backup view even though you switched gears. He took it back to the technicians and the final response she received was to shutdown the car and restart, which to me was unacceptable.
Another first issue she had was that the lane tracking continually wanted to take her on an exit instead of going straight across a bridge near our home. She had to fight the steering to get the car to go the way she wanted. I was able to turn this feature off in the menus and it stays off fortunately.
The PCS kicked in about a mile from our home. The car suddenly did hard braking and nearly came to a complete stop with nothing in front of the car but traffic behind her that nearly rear ended her. There was no good explanation for this PCS event. There was a skateboarder approaching the car from the right at a perpendicular angle, and when the PCS kicked in the skateboarder was behind the vehicle off the road on a sidewalk.
Adaptive cruise is a great feature when it works, but too many times the car hard brakes with nothing in front of the car. One instance, a pickup truck in front of her took an exit off the freeway, the car suddenly did hard braking and slowed the car down from 70 to 55 while we we on the freeway with nothing in front of the car, but a semi truck bearing down on us. The car didn’t resume speed until the pickup truck was far off the freeway exit.
I have been working with the local dealer on resolving these issues, but so far we don’t have solutions. My wife has lost faith in Toyota products, and we are a long time consumer and customer for their vehicles, going back to the 1970s. My wife struggles to get into the car and drive it, not knowing what it will do to her today. The hard braking causes stress on her cervical vertebrae, from a prior accident caused by the automatic doors on a 1999 Honda Odyssey that nearly killed her, but that’s a different story and the reason we started buying new Toyota vehicles, instead of other manufacturers. I don’t know how we resolve this and gain her confidence back in Toyota products.

I bought a 2020 RAV4 hybrid xse new 5 years ago. My power tailgate hydronic pistons were replaced a few years back for making a noise while coming down just before closing. This was taken care of under warranty. My gas tank was replaced when the new models were experiencing those well know fill problems. This was early on and taken care of under warranty. Other than those few issues, my RAV4 has been relatively care free from issues. I do regular 5,000 mile oil changes and filter, keep my air filters clean, as well as the hybrid battery filter under the seat. I get pretty good mileage out of it(close to the stated MPG0. I hope to have a long happy relationship with my RAV4.

I had a 2023 RAV4 XLE hybrid from July 2023 until March 2025. I was excited to get it after waiting a few months. The fuel economy was excellent - about 38 mpg highway and 34 mpg city. I was always puzzled why I could never get it to be better in the city than on the highway, as the ratings say. I'm not sure if that's because I live in Toronto where the traffic is quite slow.
Although quiet in the city when the electric motor was in use, it was very noisy on the highway, A big problem for me was that the whole time I owned the car, CarPlay kept randomly disconnecting from my iPhone, on average at least once a drive. Sometimes it would reappear after a few seconds, sometimes I would have to go into the settings and reconnect it. This was very annoying and a safety hazard. I took it to the dealer and they reset the module, but the problem persisted. This was a big reason that I sadly traded in the car for a different one. I would never have expected this when I bought it, as I had always driven cars for 10+ years in the past.
