"Should I get rid of my mint 2023 Toyota Tacoma and buy a 2025 Toyota Tundra? I'm worried about the Tundra's engine issues."
That's what Andre Kaufman says on the 2023-2025 Toyota Tundra Owner's Facebook page. He's asking Tundra owners if he should buy a new Tundra because he dislikes his Tacoma so much.
What would you do in his situation?
Imagine the disappointment of trading in a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, one of the best vehicles you've ever owned. You were drawn to the look of the 3rd-gen models, so you eagerly purchased a 2023 Tacoma, expecting it to surpass your previous-gen Tacoma pickup. However, it fell far short of your expectations.
Shortly after you purchased the new Tacoma, you discovered it has fatal flaws that you can't live with. Despite this, you've kept the Tacoma immaculate and performed all the regular maintenance; the truck looks fantastic.
It has low mileage because you don't drive it much, as you don't like it.
The only thing you do like about the 2023 Tacoma is its exterior design. Just about everything else about it, you abhor. You are ready to get rid of it and buy a Toyota Tundra truck.
However, you've heard about the Tundra's engine failure problems. So, you join the Tundra owners page and ask what other Tundra owners think. Most of the Tundra owners still like their trucks, even those who have had to replace the engine.
First, what does Andre dislike about his 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma?
He says, "I have two vehicles: my 2023 Tacoma and an older 2007 Camry. The Camry is for around town, and I no longer trust it enough for any road trips, but it's a really comfortable vehicle."
"The problem is I have a love-hate relationship with the Tacoma. I love the look and simplicity of the Tacoma, but it's a bit underpowered, and even worse than that, it's the most uncomfortable truck I've ever owned or have ever sat in."
Andre's Tacoma Has Fatal Flaws
"The driver seat destroys my body after more than 15 or 20 minutes, especially my left hip; when I get out, it's totally locked up. My left knee rides on the left door and bounces off it as I go down the road. On top of that, the Tacoma is really cramped."
"I had a 2010 Tacoma, and I loved it; it was way more comfortable than my 3rd generation."
"My Tacoma is very uncomfortable and underpowered, and the transmission is just plain awful."
"It's only redeeming value is the way it looks and its reliability. Everything else flat-out sucks. I test-drove a 4th gen, and it's what I'd look at if I wanted a Tacoma; the powertrain is a lot better."
Wait, There's More He Doesn't Like About His Tacoma
"The AC in my Tacoma is barely adequate when temperatures get in the upper 80s, above that, and it really struggles. My Camry is like a meat locker when it's 100° out."
So, should Andre get rid of his Tacoma and buy a Tundra?
"I don't put a lot of miles on my vehicles each year, so I'm a bit worried that my warranty would expire on a new Tundra before the engine would ever let go, and I'm not sure if I want to keep trading the vehicle in every three or so years."
He Asks Tundra Owners
"So, convince me one way or the other if I should buy a Tundra or not. I test-drove a few of them, and they seemed quite nice and comfortable, with "God-like" power compared to what I'm used to in my Tacoma."
"I got an offer for $41,500 on my absolutely mint Tacoma."
"I'm looking at a 2025 Tundra TRD Platinum or a 1794, and it has to be in Lunar Rock. I'm just a bit concerned with all the Tundra engines that seem to be going out around here."
Keli Tena's Lunar Rock Tundra
What should he do?
Josh Chittaphong agrees with Andre that the Tacoma is not comfortable.
He says, "I had a 2020 Tacoma TRD off-road that I had bought brand new 5 years ago. I loved it when my commute was only 10 minutes. However, when I moved back home (driving from California to Tennessee, and my commutes were significantly longer), I grew to hate it and realized how small, cramped, and underpowered it was. Long story short, I now have a 2025 Limited Crewmax, and I'm in love."
Fred George - "Well, my opinion is to get the Tundra. I'm 70 years old and have had many trucks in my life, but this Limited has absolutely the best, smoothest, and quietest ride of any of them. I'm glad I didn't spend the extra on the Platinum and other high-priced models. In my opinion, this Limited is fantastic!"
Top contributor Stephen Mazzola says, "I loved my 2021 Tacoma. I had a boatload of money and time into it. It looked amazing, and I always got positive comments on it. It was as capable as you can make a mid-sized truck."
"It could not get out of its way with 33s on it. Even with the OTT tune, the tune is a waste of $500. It sucked on gas, probably around 12 mpg. However, keep in mind that I had a lot of extra weight on it."
"I miss it daily until I take my Tundra out. The power the truck has is amazing. All the tech is amazing. And it actually gets better mileage than my Tacoma did. I'm getting up to 14 mpg in Tundra with 3" lift and 35s."
"It's night and day as far as comfort. The Tundra definitely won't get in tight trails like a Tacoma, but I feel it outperforms in every other aspect. Good luck with your final choice. In a perfect world, I could have kept both."
Andre is almost convinced now to get out of his Tacoma and into a new Tundra.
Daniel Lay says, "I had a 2023 Tacoma and upgraded to a Tundra. My Tundra has 600 miles and has been in the shop more times than the Tacoma ever was after two years. That being said, I way prefer driving and riding in the Tundra. I also found the Tacoma to be extremely uncomfortable and way too small, as well as underpowered. I am short and fat, though."
After Emerson Rodriguez's words, Andrea is convinced.
Emerson says, "My brother has a Platinum Tundra, and it's a night and day difference with my Tacoma. The Tundra is way more comfortable and has more power, and that 10-speed transmission is something else. A Tundra will fit you better, but if you want comfort, it'll have to be Platinum or 1794 trim."
What is Andre's Decision?
Andre says, "Well. I've made my decision. I'm going to the Toyota dealer tomorrow, and I'm getting in a 2025 Tundra Platinum TRD Off Road in Lunar Rock."
In the End
First, it's a good idea to talk with other Tundra owners before you pull the trigger and trade a mint vehicle, like Andre's 2023 Tacoma, which is in excellent condition, for another vehicle you aren't sure about. Now, he can make an informed choice.
However, has Toyota fixed the Tundra engine failure problems?
There are reports of 2025 Toyota Tundra engine failures that are explicitly related to main bearing issues and a ticking noise similar to that of the 2024 models. One 2025 Tundra reported a locked-up engine with only 1528 miles. Check out Kirk Cashen's unbelievable story here.

Buddy gets "up to 14mpg" with a 3" lift and 35's. Haha that's crap. I wouldn't trade my Taco for any other vehicle. I test drove it before buying, like most sensible people do. That would have uncovered some of Andre's issues. Anyway, my Taco drives nice, is comfortable and gets 23mpg. If you don't need a truck, why buy one? This article is stupid. Try and make people dislike the Tacoma and buy a vehicle that is worse for the environment, nice job.

I drive my 2019 Tacoma daily and love it. I have a 98 Taco and 2 mid 60s Land Cruisers also.
If the truck doesn't fit you get a different brand.

I wanted to chime in here to save this owner from himself. I own a 2015 Toyota Tacoma DCLB SR5 4WD. I used to buy Toyota trucks every 5 years or so for my business. I test drove 2019 and 2020 Tacoma s and every one of them fell far short of the 2015 in the way he described. I decided to keep the 2015 and simply maintain it myself ( very easy on this truck) after 10 years this truck runs and drives as good if not better than when it was new with 125000 miles. They're giving him a good trade in number to unload one of those modern trucks on him which in the long run Will cost so much more money than if he buys a well taken care of 2nd gen . Even with over 100000 miles that truck is likely to last just as long as one of those newfangled trucks and in 10 years he'll save enough money to buy whatever shit they're selling when and if he's ever ready to get rid of one of the best trucks ever built . Toyota quality is not what it used to be and having to be married to the dealer really sucks.

I have a 2023 trd sport 4wd dcsb tacoma and I bought it new in September 2023. I now have just a touch over 21k miles and even though it’s far different from the 2012 f150 lariat 4wd with 5.0L that I sold, I still love it. As far as comfort, I’m 5’6” and 143lbs so there’s plenty of room for me as 98% of the time I’m the only one in it. I have leather seats that are super supportive imo. As far as power, it has plenty enough for what I use it for which is daily driving. Transmission gear hunting is gone thanks to a $450 tune. Would I buy it again given the chance? Yes.

I love my 2022 long bed SR5 Tacoma. I pull an enclosed 24 ft Car hauler With a 2800 lb show car inside. It gets 12 mpg towing and 30 mpg alone on the hwy. Also get over 20 around town. I agree it shifts weird but not when I'm towing. I put a $95 Corolla chip in it not sure if that's why I'm getting such good mileage or if just the nature of the truck. It doesn't seem uncomfortable to me. I'm 6 ft 185 and drove it on vacation last year 1600 mile round trip at 30 mpg.
Was an enjoyable ride to me but I'm not too picky. I wouldn't spent 55 to 60k on a tundra. My 38k is just fine for me

You may want to research the tundra transmission lag issue as well. It really makes it terrible to drive. Also you may want to factor in the gas mileage, the Tundra is good, but still full size mileage nothing like Tacoma. There really is no benefit to sticking with Toyota and paying a premium price for the same poor quality as the big 3. Unfortunately there are not quality manufacturers anymore.

Sounds like you need to go back and get a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. Not sure why we're insistent on throwing good money after bad when the old school is what he clearly wanted in the first place.
Although I guess that's to be expected, considering he doesn't trust his daily driver out of town. What kind of pansy "doesn't trust" an '07 Camry?

I test drove a new Tacoma 4 cylinder turbo before I ended up buying a '24 Tundra Limited TRD last fall. I found the Tacoma to be underwhelming in every way. I walked away from the Taco and decided on the Tundra after a second test drive. For not much more $, the new Tundra is twice the truck vs the new Tacoma. 10k miles later, no regrets!

Crooks, and I will never buy or even ride in another Toyota as long as I live. Time to buy American, the hell with the Dinks that make most Tacomas in Mexico paying slave wages. Worst Pos ever. Readers Heed My Warning, Toyota= JUNK.

But the downside they DON'T tell wear and tear on that engine. You .....Get a Tacoma 2020 below you'll be much happier Oh another thing checkout the Tacoma BAD frame issue years..think 2010-2014. Good luck

Had a 23 Tacoma sport for 3 and a half months. Handed the keys back once Toyota dealer said they would no long look at the truck until there was a service light on or it stops on the side of the road. Transmission shutter and hesitated and eventually started to slip badly in overdrive. Love the truck but no faith in Toyota warranty. On to a Jeep Gladiator.

I have to agree that the seats are not comfortable or placed at the correct height, but that can be changed easily. I love the looks of the 3rd gen Taco and the reliability, but I have to totally disagree with drivabity of the truck after installing a tune. The tune completely changed my truck for the better. Has plenty of power and the transmissions shift points are correct and in the right gear at the right time. I now leave the truck in DRIVE instead of manual mode. Drivabity is very acceptable now and I will definitely keep my 23' Taco. I personally don't care for the looks or the problems of the new Taco or Tundra.

What would I do? If you're in a hole, stop digging. I would find another brand of truck. My father bought one Toyota after another, and traded in every one of them because of one issue or another.
He asked me what I thought he should buy. I said, "You've hated every Toyota you ever bought. Try a Honda."
He said, "I love Toyotas." I think that's the problem here as well.

My 2020 trd sport manual transmission is fine. Comfortable for my 6'2" frame after seat jackers. AC blows as cold as anything I've ever driven in the Texas heat. (Well over 105°, previously mainly driven Fords)
And knowing how to work a stick it's quick enough. A little under powered on the highway at 80mph +. But with a little creative shifting, I haven't run into any problems it couldn't handle.
It's a get anywhere type of vehicle. Not a sports car.

It's a tough one. I had a 2016 Tacoma that I ordered just how I wanted, traded my 2010 Tacoma in on it.... Gave up the 4.0l with manual trans for the horrid 3.5L and the awful auto. I also hated that truck but I drove it as my second vehicle 156k miles. I considered a new tundra back in 23, drove a couple, kept putting it off. Then the failures started. A buddy of mine in Colorado had his 24 fail with 2,600 miles on the odometer and it took the dealer 5 months to get it back to him. I would never ever buy a Tundra right now, they have clearly not fixed this problem.
I finally traded my Tacoma (for $16,000👍) on a 25 RAM 1500 Bighorn 3.0L twin turbo. I suppose the same can be said for the RAM as can be said for the Tundra as far as tech and power and luxury. It's an impressive machine and it gets significantly better mileage than the Tundra does if that matters. So far the 3.0L Hurricane has not shown a tendency to fail since it's introduction in the big jeeps a few years ago so that's a big plus. I also have a Camry so I'm partial to Toyota but this time around the new Tacoma was not doing it for me and the Tundra needs to work out it's engine woes before I'll go back to a Toyota truck.

I traded my 22 TRD Offroad Tacoma for a new F150 Tremor for the exact same reasons. The Tacoma was such a disappointment compared to earlier models that I had owned.
