Should American Presidents Promote American-Made Green Electrified Vehicles? If so, why does the left-leaning media seem to report on this differently when President Trump does it?

President Trump held a promotion event at the White House to support Tesla, the leader in American-made electric vehicles. This sure seems to rub left-leaning media outlets the wrong way.

Yesterday, President Trump had Tesla bring its battery-electric vehicles to Washington to showcase the leading American-made electric vehicle manufacturing company’s products. President Trump is, for the moment, a staunch ally of Elon Musk, who sorta does, sorta doesn’t officially work for the President, hunting for waste, fraud, and abuse in government agencies. Depending on who you ask, Musk has either been remarkably successful or is bringing about the end of the world. We’re experiencing a pretty bipolar moment in American history right now that started roughly around 1776.

Here’s part of NPR’s coverage of the event:

“It looks like a way of saying this economy will be driven by favoritism," Painter said. "It looks like government picking winners and losers, and the government saying, 'Tesla is the winner.'"

NPR went on to say, “Trump, who has revoked Biden-era efforts to incentivize electric vehicles, said he'd pay for the car with a check, and would keep it at the White House for staff to use.”

NPR seems a bit ahead of itself here. At this moment in the Trump 47 administration, our tax code still incentivizes EVs to the tune of as much as $7,500. That may soon change, but President Trump kept such incentives for the full four years of his first term, along with other green incentives like subsidies and trade restrictions to promote residential solar power.

Speaking about the top-selling American-made green vehicle, the President said, "Five years from now, when I'm not president anymore, I'll buy one and drive it myself." Sorry if we confused the story a bit, but that President wasn’t Trump, but Obama, who made the promise while promoting the Chevrolet Volt Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). We used to call those “EVs” in America until the battery-only jihad took over the word and claimed it as their own. Was President Obama “Picking the winners and losers” in 2016 when he endorsed and promoted the Chevy Volt? We wonder which color he chose when he kept his promise and bought a Volt?

Following his comments to selected media outlets, the President himself took a ride in one of the many American-made battery-electric vehicles on hand. Sorry, we are off track again. That wasn’t President Trump; it was President Biden, who drove an all-electric Ford F-150. Was President Biden “Picking the winners and losers” when he promoted the all-electric Ford F-150?

The President also had a top-level cabinet meeting with Elon Musk, inviting the Transportation Secretary, Energy Secretary, National Climate Advisor, and Infrastructure Coordinator. The meeting was in 2022, the President was Biden, and the attendees were Pete Buttigieg, Jennifer Granholm, Gina McCarthy, and Mitch Landrieu. Mr. Musk was not alone. The CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra, also attended.

In his first term, the Republican-led Congress passed renewed electric vehicle subsidies, and Donald Trump signed the bill, making the subsidies law. It ended up excluding Tesla from consideration for the consumer-facing tax incentive price subsidies. Every Democrat voted against President Trump’s renewed EV subsidies. We now have a much more complicated law passed by Democrats during the Biden administration  that does include subsidies for Tesla.

If this story was hard to follow, we apologize. It is truly challenging to put one’s finger on the pulse of the American heartbeat. One minute, we are instructed to love EVs, love Tesla, and having the President promote American-made EVs is a good thing. Then the next moment, the media would like us to somehow look angrily at this type of activity. We do our best to report on the changing times.

Do you think Presidents should work hard to promote American-based companies that design, manufacture, and assemble vehicles in America?

How about green vehicles? Do you think President Trump's promotion of green vehicles was somehow different from Obama and Biden's efforts? Tell us in the comments below.

IMNSHO, it is wrong for ANY president to favor one "American?" automaker over another. Regardless of the make, the president should work towards improving the entire U.S. automotive industry so that "We the People" are the ones to benefit.

WRT Trump being pro-Tesla recently, if history means anything, this is just a bone thrown to Elon. A mercurial president does not do anything for anyone else's benefit, only for their own benefit or for their ego. If Elon is blamed for a drop in Trumps' ratings during his presidency, you will see a reversal in the relationship between the two. Guaranteed.

But this is all a smokescreen and part of the Reality TV we call "American Politics" today.

The American public should be more concerned over what is happening at home and overseas than whether or not they will get their incentive for an overpriced EV or ICE.

Just one example out of many: I have visited ten National Parks and  Monuments this past month and talked to the Park staff about the employee cuts and what this means. In short, "America the Beautiful" will not be so beautiful with expected record numbers of tourists and significantly fewer Park employees to steward the parks by the time this summer ends. It's penny-wise, pound-foolish politics when you discover how little Park employees make.

And regarding what is happening overseas: We need to remember that "No country is an Island"---a visit to Normandy would make even the most obtuse understand why.

And the Left-leaning/Right-leaning of the media is not helping. Why can't "We the People" just be given the honest facts and not the s**t show and disinformation we are spoon fed today?

Timothy, my sincerest thanks for you being the first to comment. Well said. Expanding on what you say in the beginning, I was one of many who were annoyed when P. Biden excluded Tesla from its EV summit and pretended the "leaders" were in attendance. And I would not call myself a big Tesla fan. Tesla does not support my work in any way, so I don't go out of my way to support the company with content. Back to the summit. How can a company with over 50% market share be excluded? It was because Tesla uses non-union manufacturing. So many angles to consider.

John, great question highlighting a key political and economic tension. The differing media coverage is certainly something to consider. Thanks for sharing!

Just more Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Trump could cure cancer and he'd be criticized for closing down cancer treatment centers and putting oncologists out of work. This seems to be the same with the electric vehicles.

Trump cure cancer. Thanks I needed the laugh. Besides does Trump even know how to drive a car? Biden had a classic Vette. Obama drove a Chrysler Hemi. What does Trump drive? Can he even drive a golf cart?

Johnny, you brought up an interesting question, so I Googled it. Like all Presidents, Donald Trump deferred to the Secret Service and refrained from normal driving once elected President (or VP).  According to CarBuzz, President Trump owned and drove a V12 Rolls Royce Phantom with 531 lb-ft of torque. He generally favored V8s and is reported to have owned a Northstar V8-powered Cadillac, as well as an SLR McLaren Mercedes (turbocharged V8) and a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. CarBuzz also reports he owned and drove a Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari F430 F1 Coupe, and was one of the first Americans to buy and drive a Tesla Roadster. The CarBuzz article is dated November 8, 2024 and was reported by Gerhard Horn, the publication's Senior Editor. President Trump was invited to drive a Camaro SS as an Indy Pace car, but was already under the protection of Secret Service, so he he bought one out of courtesy to the event organizers and GM. We scanned other articles from a variety of publications who reported similar facts. Thank you for asking, Johnny. There is endless video of him driving golf carts, by the way. Something he is criticized for doing too often by left-leaning media up to this very day.
