Rivian’s First R2 Deliveries Will Start at Just Under $60K This Spring

We now have the price of the first Rivian R2 trim that will be for sale by Rivian, and it’s 33% higher than the $45K many EV publications have been touting.

Rivian posted its R2 electric SUV prices and timeline this week, and those who believed the media hype about the vehicle “starting at $45K" will be quite surprised to learn that the starting price is actually just under $60K. Here is the page that Rivian shows now on its consumer-facing page:

The R2 will start off its deliveries as the fully-loaded Performance Model. Rivian says that deliveries will begin in the spring of 2026. This is a funny timeline to advertise since spring has already started. Perhaps we should interpret the first delivery date as prior to June 21, 2026.

Rivian has also posted two additional trims that will roll out many months from now if the schedule is kept. The R2 Premium will start at about $56K. It is expected before the end of this year, so in approximately six to nine months. The R2 Standard will have a price before options of about $50,000, but don't expect any to be available until sometime in 2027. Perhaps as many as 18 months from now.

In fine print below the R2 Standard model, Rivian has posted a small note that says another model, positioned under the R2 Standard, will be made available in “late 2027.” They did not name the model that will be below the R2 Standard. Could it be called R2 Sub-Standard? We don't really know what its trim name will be if it comes to pass.

You may notice that Torque News is not copying and repeating the exact price that Rivian lists. That is because it is our understanding that Rivian has not advertised the full price of the vehicle. Rather, it is the vehicle price before Rivian’s mandatory Destination Charge and a Documentation fee, which Rivian says “Represents costs and profits to Rivian for preparing the documents related to the sale.” Every reputable media outlet always includes the full cost to the consumer when publishing consumer price data, and the standard practice is to include the Destination and Delivery fee. Rather than accurately reporting on vehicle prices, some media outlets and content creators intentionally help manufacturers promote vehicles by showing a lower-than-actual consumer cost. I don’t.

Adding in the expected Destination and Delivery fee to the unnamed trim of the R2 that may be sold sometime in late 2027, our best estimation of the consumer cost would be $47K, rounding to the nearest thousand. On the Rivian Forum, fans are chatting about Rivian scrubbing the "Starting at $45K" wording off its website that they noticed prior to launch.

About Rivian
Rivian is an American battery-electric luxury SUV and truck manufacturer with two models presently on sale. The R1T has a price range of approximately $75,000 and rising to about $120,000. The R1S sport utility vehicle has a price starting at $79,000 and rising to approximately $125,000.

About the Rivian R2
The Rivian R2 is a smaller SUV than the R1S, and is expected to sell in the five-passenger SUV segment, the segment with the most sales volume in America. However, the R2 is priced to compete with the luxury models in that segment, not the mainstream SUVs. The average transaction (ATP) price for five-passenger SUVs ranges from just under $37K for the smaller models to about $50K in the mid-sized range, according to Cox Automotive. The luxury compact SUV segment has an ATP of about $52,000.  We were not able to find the EPA passenger volume of the R2, so we are not certain which size segment it will more closely align with.
