New 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL class debuts at NYIAS

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL class features improvementss across the board including safety upgrades, more powerful and fuel efficient engines, and interior changes sure to be welcome by drivers hauling families.

The Mercedes GL class is the large SUV offering from the premium automaker used by families to travel in style and comfort to all manner of activities. Capable off road, on snow, or on the way to pick up the basketball team, the GL is versatile and luxurious. For 2013 Mercedes-Benz makes across the board improvements to this already capable SUV.

Interior upgrades
This full-size SUV has always been a comfortable place in which to travel. Nonetheless, Mercedes-Benz has added more head, elbow, and shoulder room for its occupants in each position of the 2-3-2 layout, while changing the width of the vehicle less than an inch. Electric seat controls for the third row are standard and there is now optional power assist for the Easy-Entry system that enables passengers to get to the third row. This is much more elegant than having the kids dive over the second row back seat rest, though not nearly as much fun. Other interior changes and improvements for the GL include a new Central Command Center for infotainment and HVAC control, ambient lighting additions and a color instrument cluster display. A panoramic roof is now available as well.

Engine power and efficiency gains
Mercedes-Benz continues its march toward direct injected engines and the two gasoline power options improve pretty significantly. The '550 is now a twin turbo V8 with 516 ft-lb of torque, more than the diesel option, which has 455 ft-lbs available. That should quite nicely haul the ski-boat up a mountain pass with little effort. Fuel efficiency is improved across the board, but let’s remember that this is not a line of compact SUVs. The diesel offers some solace to those who fret about MPG.

Safety innovations
All Mercedes-Benz SUVs feature cutting edge safety innovations, but the 2013 GL line adds a lot in one dose. New to the line for the model year are:
- A Collision Prevention System (which works up to 155 mph!)
- Driver Attention Assist
- Crosswind Stabilization
- Optional PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist
- Optional Active Curve Illuminating headlights

The new 2013 Mercedes Benz GL line improves upon a mature, full-size, SUV which is at the pinnacle of large vehicle comfort, safety and practicality.
