Thieves Risk Their Lives For Toyota Prius Catalytic Converters

Catalytic converter theft is so bad now that the people stealing them are willing to risk their life for it.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department, there has been a 400% increase in catalytic converter theft from 2019 to 2020. Now only three months into this year, we see record numbers of a robbery that could very well surpass the previous year.

Catalytic converter theft is continuing to reach new records all the time. The price of precious metals, especially Rhodium, has been the "catalyst" in all the crimes.

Reports of enormous gang rings that are contributing to organized crime are part of the issue. Now it appears these thieves will literally give up their lives to get their hands on them.

The death in Anaheim, California, is not unique, but it certainly has made the news. Other "cat burglars" have been squashed before. Until recently, with the massive spike in theft, if this happened, you probably would not hear about it.

Why This Is Such A Big Issue
I am even taking the time to report on this to portray what some people are willing to risk. Think of it this way. Would you be willing to risk your life to make anywhere from $5,000 or more a night stealing catalytic converters? Some people are. Money changes the way people act and think, and the death of this criminal proves that.

2014 Toyota Prius Getting Converter Stolen

I get it that these are hard times right now everywhere, but giving your life away for something like this is completely crazy. Not only that, but these thieves have also shot and killed the vehicle owners, which is beyond sad.

Conclusion
As a Prius owner and as an automotive professional, I urge people to do everything they can to get their cars protected. Park out of sight, have a better alarm system installed, etch your VIN on the converter or install high-level catalytic converter shields.

I hope that no one has to have their converter stolen. My heart goes out to anyone who has. If you need protection and are in a bad area, let me know, and I will see if I can help you get protected.

I lived in Richmond California and my friend's car sounded like lawnmower. Her catalytic converter gone. She upset it will cost her thousand dollars to fix it. She don't have money to fix it, hoping she will find out who did it so that person will pay for it. Good Luck.

It's ironic when many people who have tuned cars just dump the cat. they used to have a pretty low value on used market. even turbo diesel owners would often remove cat, particle filters, and do ecu tune for cheap boost in power.

Justice! They deserve it. If i catch anyone but me under my car i will kick the jack from underneath and have bullets ready

This is unreal. Thievery must be the most shameless, outrageous, and thankless job. These "people" must be really desperate, or just morally bankrupt.

It's not just Toyota Prius, but many Hondas as well. Mine was stolen from my 2003 Honda Element in January 2021, in Rodeo, CA. I decided heavy heartedly to give up on the car. I don't need to spend the additional finances to install cages and alarms, so it (maybe) won't happen again. Because they can do this in under a minute. It's aggrevating that if you work so hard, you have your property damaged and/or stolen. So done with this.

Make every scrap metal dealer photograph the face and driver's license of anyone selling a converter and this shit will stop!

Jack kicker (not verified)    March 20, 2021 - 10:19AM

Moral of the story is if you can stop them while it's in progress, kick the jack out from underneath the car and crush them while they're underneath it. Or speak to local government about making the scrap metal recycling places accountable....

Its so easy to just call these people scumbags for stealing, and most of the time they are, but not always. If you've never had it rough before, and never faced constant denials for assistance in feeding & housing your children, then you sure as hell don't have a right to judge them! I'll bet you that a good majority of them do not want to be out there doing that, but unfortunately feel it's necessary to support their family. I know in your safe little world everything is lolipops and gumdrops, and you THINK poor people have all these "safety nets" because that's what you've been told, but go ahead and try to qualify for one of those so-called "safety nets" & watch how quick you hit the ground! Do I think theft is right, or the proper way of supporting ones family? Absolutely not, but am I God & can pass judgement on others because I'm just so perfect? Hell no! And NEITHER ARE YOU!

Yeah and what about the guy whose converter got stolen, so he can no longer get to work and feed HIS kids, you selfish narrow minded piece of human waste. If stealing or selling drugs or anything else illegal is how you support your kids, then you shouldnt have had any fucking kids. How fucking selfish. What are those kids gonna do when your in prison, or dead, cuz the person who you ripped off shot you? I guess theyll starve then. You short sighted narrowminded selfish prick. Defending thieves and just disregarding their victums because they are going through hard tines. We all go through hard times you piece of shit, but you dont see me out robbing a liquor store at gunpoint.

Ive had enough. (not verified)    March 25, 2021 - 4:59AM

Ammonia from glass cleaner and good old bleach. Put it in a glass bottle and cork it and boom. You have a chloramine gass bomb that is lethal in a 200ppm concentration. I will find the person or persons who have stolen from me. This is your only warning. I want an admission of guilt, and 6000$ from whoever stole both my converters.

Here in Sioux Falls, SD, our police have said to call if a person sees legs under a vehicle. Only a couple of the calls were owners.

The police arrested several men from Iowa last week after someone called in they were fishing illegally. They weren't, but in their tote bag, they had four catalytic converters.

One of the muffler and exhaust shops here replaced 6 converters in one day. The owner said prices range from around $300 up to $1200 depending on what damage there is under the car. He showed underneath a car and said these people go under the cars with a hacksaw and don't care what lines they cut on their way to getting the converter out.

I have a deterrent, not failsafe but... using rain gutter down spout 3 feet long, I wired empty tuna cans to the down spout. One on each end and in the middle. You cannot move this without making an obnoxious noise- you can only move it quietly with 4 hands which no one has. Simply straddle park over the device so it is directly under the cat converter. Stupid loud when it is moved, the more you try to move it the more racket it makes. Hope this helps someone...replacement cost me $3k when my 2005 cat was stolen

My CC was stolen last Monday in our driveway àt night. where did the author get the information that priuß drivers are now getting shot and killed? I haven't seen anything about this, but if it's true then we are trading it in.

Stu Rhodes (not verified)    March 21, 2021 - 8:12AM

Since July 2012 Florida has had a restricted metals law. You cannot sell a catalytic converter unless you can prove it is or was yours. There are numerous identifying marks on the cats that will point to whatever car it came from. If you don't have paperwork to prove that it was your car or was once your car, its not being bought at least by the scrupulous recyclers.

Hello everyone.
I am sorry to hear that this crime is affected so many people everywhere.
What can you do to prevent it.
On the toyotas
Fit a security plate only costs about £40 to £50.
This would be the beat soclution.
Chiaper solution is to replace the 14 mm securing bolts with spline bolts or even weld on top of the original bolt heads.
That will prevent thieves from taking your catalyst.
Dont foeget the thieves are after quick in and out they do not want to be under your car for more than 1 minute.
Hope this helps guys
Good luck be safe.

do what I did drop your exhaust down weld 2 ⛓ chains or cables to your converter and bolt the chains ⛓ or cables to the frame of the car. they may steel get it but not without a fight.

Tom (not verified)    March 22, 2021 - 10:05AM

The simple solution is just defund and get rid of the police, decriminalize theft then the perps can just kindly tell you they are taking your cat cause they deserve it and you don't. There would be so much peace and love in this world if everyone would just learn to share and realize no one deserves anymore than anyone else.

Zack Attack (not verified)    March 22, 2021 - 12:19PM

No surprise that sanctuary cities are the hardest hit. You let swarms of illegals in, you defund the police, you demonize the police (no wonder they won't help you) and the prosecutors refuse to prosecute "low level" crime. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW.

Christian Petty (not verified)    March 22, 2021 - 4:19PM

Ive already had my cat converter stolen once. Ive now crashed my car, so i sleep in it with a loaded gen 3 glock 19. I dont give a fuck about laws, if i hear someone touching my car, im just gonna shoot em, grab their phone and kill as many people in their contacts list as i can find. Send a message to all the thieves. If youre friends/family with a thief, they are now putting your life in danger too.

Mike (not verified)    March 22, 2021 - 4:26PM

So my only question is how do we get this to happen MUCH more frequently? Like every time would be great.

Problem sucks in California too, because legally you can't replace it with a 3rd party unit because "emissions standards", and unfortunately that OEM Toyota unit is going to run you much much more.
