The minivan segment may seem uncool, but if you think so, you’ve not been paying attention. Some, like the Chrysler Pacifica, work to bring style to the segment. Others, like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, work to be the total package - by the way, the Pacifica does well on this account, too. Then there’s Kia’s Carnival. It’s not as stylish as the Chrysler nor as future-forward as the hybrid Sienna nor quite as acclaimed as the Odyssey - but it does everything well.
And that’s the whole point, isn’t it?
On The Road With The 2026 Kia Carnival
If the Kia Carnival were a hot-rod, it would be a sleeper - a conservatively styled, to the point it borders on boring, vehicle that looks anonymous but is fast. Or, in this case, isn’t particularly fast but is, at least relative to the class and vehicle type, fairly dynamically engaging.
Kia puts a 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 under the hood of this one, though a hybrid setup is available. This one puts out 287 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque - enough grunt for urban commuting, though it’s no burner.
Ride and handling-wise, the Carnival is smooth enough in most situations, with even broken pavement rarely presenting a problem. The steering is light and accurate without feeling artificially numb, and the moves are sharp enough. It’s been a while since I’ve piloted an Odyssey, but from what I recall, the Honda still trumps the Kia. The Carnival is more in line with the Pacifica, and perhaps a tick more fun.
The V6 mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission here, and all-wheel drive is not available.
On-road performance only matters so much to the typical minivan buyer. User experience, space, utility, and the like matter more. And the Carnival does well here, with a logically laid-out interior that includes a nice bit of space in front of the (old-school, thankfully) shifter. The gauge screen and infotainment screen integrate nicely, in what’s become a Hyundai/Kia hallmark.
There are actual knobs and buttons in an appropriate amount, though you do sometimes need to head to the touchscreen to access a certain feature or accomplish a certain task. Overall, at least, Kia has not complicated things simply for the sake of tech, but there’s still enough interior tech that Kia salespeople won’t have to wince when comparing the Carnival to the competition.
Balance is generally good, and Kia got it right here.
Headroom and legroom are plentiful, and access to the second and third row isn’t too challenging, though taller/bigger adults like your author might not feel so happy in the way back.
Grocery getting wasn’t a chore - the cargo area behind the third row is deep, which makes loading cargo easier.
Fuel economy is listed at 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.
Features And Pricing For The 2026 Kia Carnival
My test unit, a top-trim SX Prestige, arrived with a sticker price of $51,090. Standard features included the dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Kia Connect, satellite radio, passenger view and talk, dual power-sliding rear doors, tri-zone climate control, keyless access and starting, remote start, wireless phone charger, heated and cooled front seats, digital key, 19-inch wheels, power liftgate, dual-power sunroofs, LED exterior lighting, roof rails, and rear spoiler.
Standard advanced-driver aid features included a rear-occupant sensor, forward collision-avoidance assist with cyclist and junction turning, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic avoidance-assist, driver-attention warning and high-beam assist, lane-keep assist and lane-following assist, safe-exit assist, and highway-driving assist, park-distance warning, parking collision-avoidance assist, surround-view monitor, blind-spot monitor, and smart cruise control with stop and go.
Adding the Prestige trim to the SX will net you dark edition alloy wheels, dark exterior accents, LED projector headlights, leather seat trim, head-up display, Bose premium audio, digital rearview mirror, and a heated steering wheel.
Options were minimal, just carpeted floor mats and a cargo mat. The total cost, including with destination fees, was $52,990.
Kia’s Carnival isn’t flashy, nor is it the most fun to drive, and the hybrid adds cost. But it just freakin’ works. On-road dynamics are well-tuned, interior space is copious, the interior layout is logical, and it does all the things you’d buy a minivan for and does them well.
Some shoppers are going to go elsewhere for looks, on-road dynamics, or certain features. But for those who just want a package that works well and isn’t flashy, the Carnival brings the party.
