Next-Gen 2022 Toyota 4Runner Coming and Enthusiasts Offer Redesign Suggestions

The popular Toyota 4Runner has a following like no other in the automotive industry. See when it will be redesigned and learn what thousands of 4Runner enthusiasts suggested for updates and improvements as the 2020 4Runner is coming soon.

Fans and followers of Toyota 4Runner already know the proud legacy of this tough and rugged SUV. After all, 4Runner has been transporting families both on the road and off since 1984, with no plans for slowing down in sight.

All signs are pointing to a new 6th-generation Toyota 4Runner for the 2022 model year. We polled an online forum of more than 36,000 Toyota 4Runner loyalists, enthusiasts and fanatical fans to see what next-gen suggestions they have for the engineering and design team working hard to deliver a product we will all be proud of.

What is so special about 4Runner now?

Toyota 4Runner is designed with body-on-frame construction, which is unique from most other SUV’s. This means the body is mounted to a relatively rigid frame. Because of this, 4Runner excels at off-roading where your vehicle is often up against uneven, rocky, tough terrain. It also performs well in hauling your toys like boats, campers and trailers. The 4Runner has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

The powertrain consists of a 4.0L V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque combined with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It is available exclusively with automatic transmission, as manual is not a current option.

Popular trims TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro offer many resources for when you want to drive and play off the beaten path. Multi-terrain select and crawl control help guide you in low-traction situations. One feature demanded for by loyalists is locking rear differential, and 4Runner TRD owners will be pleased this is standard. Also standard on TRD models is active traction control and hill start assist.

What changes will we see in 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

Although extremely popular with SUV owners, one of the main critiques for the 2019 Toyota 4Runner is the need for upgraded safety and technology. Just like the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, the 2020 4Runner will receive some beneficial safety and multimedia upgrades.

For people concerned with safety, Toyota Safety Sense-P (Pedestrian) will be added to all trim levels of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner.

Toyota is also adding Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa to its 2020 4Runner model year. Expect standard SiriusXM on all 4Runner trim levels as well. In fact, Toyota is making SiriusXM a standard feature on all levels of every model across the board by summer of 2020.

Expect larger multimedia screen sizes on most or all trim levels as well. For example, 2020 4Runner TRD Pro has already been announced with an 8-inch screen.

What would we like to see with the 2022 Redesigned 4Runner?

There are many online forums dedicated to specific car brands and models. None may be quite as passionate and loyal to their favorite SUV as the “Toyota 4Runners” online group. We asked them for ideas and suggestions for improving the current 2019 Toyota 4Runner as it evolves into its new 6th generation model.

As you can imagine, the hundreds of responses were very well thought out and diverse, as well as being extremely informative and enlightening.

4Runner Performance suggestions

Many ideas for improving powertrain and safety came up, and this was certainly a hot topic with forum members. Most agreed that improvements to both power and the all-important miles per gallon were most important. However, the answers branched off from there.

“I hope they keep it as an off-road capable truck. Maybe a Diesel engine?”

“Functional hood scoop (because turbo diesel); front (in addition to rear) lockers standard on Off-Road/Pro.”

“Manual transmission and diesel.”

“V8!!!! Maybe even turbo diesel!”

“Please add front locking diff along with rear locker.”

“Bring the v8 back and improve the fuel efficiency again.”

“Way more power and 8 speed transmission. Better fuel economy.”

“Put a manual back in it and add a V8 option again.”

“I hope they increase mpg so I’m not constantly filling up.”

“LED headlights/DRL and TSS+, they are useful for the daily drive!”

Exterior and Interior Ideas

Toyota has continually earned the reputation for a strong fit and finish over its entire product line. Clean exterior with flowing aerodynamic lines. Interior with high-scale parts and finish that lends itself nicely to luxury and sportiness.

However, just like every new generation of every model, the time has come to modernize both the outside and the inside of Toyota 4Runner. The “Toyota 4Runners” forum had some very practical, useful ideas and suggestions:

“I want to see something that still looks tough, not something that looks weak and bubbly.”

“Blind spot monitoring and power tailgate.”

“…and cooled front seats and auto trunk I’m short I need the help!”

“Please keep the power sliding rear window.”

“Better heating/ cooling for the 2nd and 3rd row seats.”

“Flat cargo space, comfortable driver’s seat.”

“More padding for my elbows on the door and center arm rest.”

“A customizable digital gauge cluster and heated and cooled seats as an option.”

“Heated seats standard, the ability to remove the 3rd row and slide the 2nd row back.”

“ALL windows power down.”

“TRD with 3rd row seating option.”

“Larger multimedia screens and colored multi-information display that is modernized.”

“More head room for back seat. I’m 5’9” and I come close to bonking my head, let alone family members that are over 6’. And it would be nice to have a V8 option again.”

“I’ll take Potpourri for $200 please Alex”

Then, there are those who had ideas that encompassed all facets of the new 2022 Toyota 4Runner redesign.

“New transmission, infotainment center, shifter on a steering column, updated lighting.”

“Bring back the removable top and add turbo diesel!”

“Turbo Diesel or at least V8 option (needs more power for sure). Lockers on front and rear. Solid front axle. I also wouldn’t mind remote start, a/c cooled seats on Off-Road models. Also I like my manual shifter for my 4wheel drive in the trail (I don’t want a dial or buttons but that’s probably just me).”

“Turbo diesel, 8 speed transmission, better headlight bulbs, 360 cameras, auto climate.”

“More power, better mpg, removable top and doors, bigger and better A/T tire option, LED lighting, better infotainment system, all window down button, more USB ports, apple car play, better roof rack, cool DRLs, better suspension.”

And the comment of the day goes to Pete…

“I’m cashing in my kids’ college funds if they bring out a diesel.”

As we know, it is highly unlikely the new redesigned Toyota 4Runner will be able to accommodate all of these brilliant update ideas. But, it will be interesting to see when the time comes what ones they end up using.

Driving 2005 V8 Limited-best vehicle ever owned. Tow trailers which take toll on gas mileage but love the V8 and mileage is ok , upper teens to 20 mpg, when traveling without trailer and love the power. New one needs a V8 option. Will keep as long as it runs good, but do miss the safety features available on new vehicles. Not sure a new 4runner would be an option without the V8.

New 4 runner suggestions.
1) Keep the key features that are part of the vehicle's identity...such as the power rear window, body-on-frame design and overall rugged nature.
2) Must upgrade all lighting to LED. The halogens are very poor.
3) More powerful standard engine. Whether its a turbo/supercharged engine doesnt matter much. Fuel economy is not a major priority for buyers of this vehicle. A diesel option would be nice, but likely wont happen...Thats a niche within niche market and likely wouldnt sell enough.
4) Upgraded tech/larger touchscreen. However, DO NOT load it up with all the other tech nonsense nobody needs i.e. lane watch, lane keep assist, etc. Keep it simple, id say the heated/cooled seats are even unneccessary.
5) This will never happen, but BRING BACK THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Realistically, an 8 speed automatic or similar would be nice.

I read thousands of reviews about the 4-runner, mainly because I am about to purchase a Limited version. There are many good points and requests, since 4-runner has several flaws (in conjunction of how much it cost!). But, I am willing to be "ok" with all, EXCEPT ONE: "More head room for back seat. I am 6' and when I slightly lean forward from 2nd row to the 1st, I hit my head". Seriously? And you charge close to $50k for a Limited? I do not want to not get the sunroof to fix that issue. I will not purchase one, and sadly need to look for a GX 460. But, those are SO expensive and have high cost of ownership. What is very interesting is that Toyota is aware of these problems and ONLY fixes 2-3 SMALL issues every year (if that). For 2020, they got a bigger navigation screen. I DO NOT care about that. Give the vehicle more power, better gas consumption (might not happen, since protecting the interests of big oil co's...), more interior room and more quality built material (overall, especially inside).

Thank you

On my 4th 4runner...great, reliable & safe...flipped over in it in 2016...this vehicle saved my life...it's my work Truck...would like to see them put a V8 in them for more power & a smoother ride...need to make Tailgate open by the push of a Button...Tailgate is too heavy for small people.

The majority of new 4runners are street queens and will never be taken off-road. Everyone wants the raised off-road look but are scared to get dirt on their tires. Sorry to offend all you led light bar warriors! With that in mind Toyota should put the 4Runner on a serious diet and shed 500+ pounds and swap in the hybrid 2.5 drivetrain from the hybrid rav4.

Jacob (not verified)    August 22, 2019 - 9:07AM

I think 4Runner needs the Tacoma engine, but it needs to be modified to produce at least 300 horsepower and better MPG. I also want to be with an 8 or 10 speed. A 3-liter diesel with 270 horsepower and 450+ lbs/ft of torque and an 8 or 10 speed would be great! These options would be good for the Tacoma too

Patrick (not verified)    August 27, 2019 - 1:34PM

It absolutely needs a turbo diesel (in-line 6 if possible) with a manual transmission and get 30 mpg hwy. Also, it must have the fully retractable back glass. I purchased a new 2005 Toyota Landcruiser, replaced it with a 2011 4 runner (after the cruiser frame started rusting out which was a HUGE disappointment), and now have two two turbo diesel Mercedes. I would get rid of my Benz (or maybe both) in a heartbeat in exchange for a turbo diesel 4Runner or land cruiser. Toyota is all about value and practicality. Low maintenance costs and low running costs. If They don’t bring the diesel I am getting a diesel 4 door pickup truck for $60k. These weak 4 cylinder turbos or even 6 cylinder turbos manufacturers keep launching are too neurotic and have no power unless you floor them and never get as advertised mpg. I get over 25 mpg in my diesel GL class Benz and 39 mpg in my e320 CDI. I test drive cars all the time but can’t find anything new that is as good as my used Benz in terms of power, mpg and driving experience. I am ready to write a check. Please Toyota, let me give it to you!

I don’t own a 4Runner yet but I’m looking to buy a trd pro. I own and still drive a 99 Dodge Durango 5.9 V8 4x4 beastie has been good to me but it’s time for an upgrade. So I’ve been doing research and listening to everything people have to say that do own a 4Runner as I’m looking to buy one. It sounds like the mpg could be a bit better and a bit more power for on road driving. Also yes better lights I really like to be able to see in the dark. I suffer with multiple sclerosis so the heat is not my friend I would love vented seats I feel like if it has heated seats it should also have vented. Dual climate and maybe a bit bigger moon/sun roof for star gazing :). I’m really into the trd pro I really wish it had vented seats though. My family is pretty big into off road and camping and everything out doors. so I’m really excited to buy my 4Runner! Im already looking at rooftop tents. I would love to wait to see what will happen for the redesign But I’ve already waited so long can’t wait anymore it’s time!!

A power lift gate on all models ie standard SR5 and TRD that works with the key fob. Every Toyota has one except the 4runner!

Zane (not verified)    September 20, 2019 - 10:16PM

I have a 2004 4Runner Sport with the 4.7-liter V-8. It gets 18-20 city/hwy mpg and has been rock solid reliable for 15 years.

Toyota needs to increase the horsepower of the 4.0-liter V6. Jeep makes a 3.6-liter that makes 300 horsepower and gets 26 mpg on the highway - and Toyota should be able to match or beat that.

For me - the best improvements would be a redesign of the grille and body and the addition of adaptive cruise control, active lane tracing, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert, and full LED lights throughout the vehicle.

I have been waiting for years to get a new SUV, but Toyota keeps dragging their heels - so I am looking at the 2020 Ford Explorer ST and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit with the 5.7-liter Hemi.

Owner of a 2018 ORP . Interior is great love big knobs and shifter. Could care less about a bigger screen, i hardly look at it. As far as power seems pretty good I live in a big city and have no problems getting in and out of traffic. Sometimes I floor it and get a delighted suprise as the wheels spin out, of course I would like a big v8 option. As far as MPG .. hell i just hop in the Prius for that.

Rex (not verified)    September 25, 2019 - 6:31PM

1999 SR5 owner. Drove for a few years, kids got bigger, sold it at 65K miles, zero problem, brakes like original. Still miss that truck. Thinking to get a 4Runner in 1-2 years. Drove a rental one a year ago, mostly highway and only got about 20mpg (75mph average). Felt slow with 270hp, but not a problem. My ideal next 4Runner would be V6 (don't care 3.5 or 4.0), must improve mpg, ideally around 22-23 (city/highway combined). hopefully no more 5 speed auto, at least 6 or 8 speed auto. Would be nice if manual shift available. 4k-4.4k lbs, under 190" in length. Oh, must be 100% Made in Japan.

I've been looking at a new 4Runner to replace our '99 since we feel in love with it and decided we'll always have a 4Runner in our garage now. I'd love to see a V8 since we're always off-road or on hilly terrain, or even more power and better gas mileage in the V6, I know it's a tried and true engine but they're falling behind a bit on the competition in that area. I'd also like the dual climate control as standard on the top models, to include the TRD Pro, I'm always cold and the man is always hot so it saves us when we're on trips and off-roading. Auto-dimming side mirrors seems like another easy win. Plus if you're shelling out $45k+ it just seems like a duh. Love the passenger and cargo room, the fold flat back seats, the off-roading body. etc please keep.

John Williams (not verified)    October 25, 2019 - 1:42PM

The 4 runner has to be one of the ugliest cars on the market, and with a 5 speed, that’s 20 year old technology, how about updating to today’s standards.

CFray (not verified)    November 6, 2019 - 10:12PM

Spec a strong base v6, not based on the 3.5L but a new 4.0L. Diesel optional engine. Manual transmission option with full time engaged AWD (like my manual FJ), with lever engagement, add front locker. Keep rear glass slide. Ditch ALL the tech - too much weight and oversight. Simple HVAC controls and all others for that matter. Don't make it a mall cruiser like all the other "SUVs" in the market. Add in some Fortuner styling elements.

Desiree G Phillips (not verified)    November 11, 2019 - 2:43PM

Love the ruggedness of the 4Runner but would like to see the Limited Edition with Captain Seats for second row and keep 3rd row seating.

Michele (not verified)    November 26, 2019 - 3:41AM

I have a 2019 TDR Off Road Premium

More head room in the front row. I'm not tall, and I can't believe how little head room is available in this great car. My head is at the ceiling when my seat is properly set to accommodate the lower half of my body for driving. Another inch in height would be very helpful.

Way better gas mileage. I get 15 mpg in the city. That's it. That's all. Incredibly low for almost 2020. How can this be?????

Lower running boards - so high that they are almost useless. As a not-tall person, the running boards have the potential to make getting in and out of this vehicle much more comfortable, but they are too high to function for that purpose.

Would love to buy in metallic orange or other more innovative colors. Some feminine colors would be fantastic.

Power lift gate - yes

I am otherwise very happy with my 4Runner. Is my 1st Toyota and I am disappointed it has taken me this long to discover a great vehicle that I can love to drive and even just sit in. :)

I do seriously hope for these mentioned improvements so I can look forward to buying a replacement 4Runner in the years ahead.

James Dossey (not verified)    December 13, 2019 - 10:01PM

I own a 2006 Tacoma. If the 4Runner had a power rear lift gate...I'd own one today. Dealership said many have asked for this option, but still no power lift gate?

Lindsay (not verified)    January 3, 2020 - 4:18PM

I am on my 4th 4Runner. I have had a 98, 08, 15 Orange TRD Pro and now a 2019 Limited Nightshade addition. I LOVE the body style and everything else about it BUT def needs more power!!! Bring back the V8 for sure. Maybe a little more leg room in front and back as well.

Enjopep (not verified)    January 9, 2020 - 12:10AM

Put a supercharger not turbo w/ 6-8 speed Tran. Use better quality paint that don't chip and fade easy, put rugged tough black moldings on fenders and real hood scoop. Plus improve mpg to 25-30 I know they can. Hoping all these by 2022 Thanks

Bob (not verified)    January 30, 2020 - 5:32PM

I'm a longtime Toyota 4Runner owner and fanatic I'm currently deciding whether to go buy a 2020 TRD pro or wait to see what's coming out next year my dealer is told me about the redesign but I'm hoping Toyota doesn't redesign the body and make it something ugly with everyone else updating the transmissions to 6 speed 8-speed even 10-speed transmissions I'm thinking maybe Toyota should do the same may help improve overall fuel economy maybe even give it a little better edge as far as performance. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more pep and power to the motor maybe a turbocharged 6 cylinder engine like the Ford has with the EcoBoost or even a six-cylinder diesel option like Chrysler has what the Jeeps and their pickups and like Ford and Chevy with their pickups a V8 would be nice but yet everyone complains about fuel economy I really don't see getting much improvement and feeling kind of me with a V8I'd like to see them keep the manual shift transmission option with the lever in a cab I'm old school I like the reliability of the lever over all the electronics I'm not real big on all the fancy electronics and power options inside the cab so that really doesn't matter to me I'm pretty happy with the way my current 4Runner is now I have a 2017 I pretty much like everything at the 4Runner has going for it right now like I said who wouldn't want more power better performance but I think they got a really good platform and I really don't see a whole lot of need for a huge bunch of improvementlocking differential would be nice if you're ever off-road with it and need a little more traction I just hope Toyota doesn't go overboard and go too far left with a redesign

Harry Heinz (not verified)    February 6, 2020 - 9:02AM

Would buy a 4Runner tomorrow if it had 6 cyl with turbo or V8. Need the towing power not kid hauler like the Sequia. Update the interior, cheap outdated plastic everywhere.

'05 V8 Owner..over 200K and still looking like new. Been to the dealership many times looking for a replacement, drove every type on the lot. Couldn't give up my V8 even with all the "More Torque" V6's. It's just not the same. Gonna ride out another 100K+ while you all burn your V6 engines up. Msg me at 300K.

Can the old 4.0. Grab the 3.5 from the Tacoma, and revamp and retune it and put it in both trucks. Saves Toyota on parts. Optional Turbo Diesel would be required at this point. It's been perfected on Toyotas sold outside of North America.Twin Turbo V-6 for the Pro 4Runner and Taco that can run on 87 octane. Manual transmission option is a must for both trucks and both engines, and Auto transmission needs to be a 8 or 10 speed ( just like my bike when I was a kid). The bumpers need to be steel offroad bumbers similar to the ARBs, not plastic. The current truck doesn't even have the option for an aftermarket upgraded bumper that protects the corners as far as I know. Drop the limited version all together. If you need a limited street only 4Runner they make Lexus for you. BFG All terrain tires standard on all 4Runners, with options of the current standard size with optional bigger tires for more serious off roaders. The bigger tires should be standard on the Pro. Have the infotainment system set up so it doesn't use the data from your cellphone.

Jennifer (not verified)    March 15, 2020 - 9:42PM

I love the rear window rolling down--please keep this option. I would absolutely love to see captain chairs on the second row and still have 3rd row option to fold down or even come out.
