2021 Ram 1500 Repeats as the Only Pickup to Win a Major Safety Award

The awards keep rolling in for the 2021 Ram 1500. This time the Ram 1500 repeats as a winner in a top safety category.

Once again, the 2021 Ram 1500 is leading the way when it comes to safety. The Ram 1500 is the only pickup truck to earn a 2021 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety - Top Safety Pick Rating. The 2021 Ram 1500 won the same rating last year for Ram 1500 crew cab trucks. This year’s IIHS Top Safety Pick honor focused on Ram 1500s equipped with the Advanced Safety Group package of safety features.

“A Top Safety Pick for the Ram 1500 solidifies our long-standing commitment to our customers through advanced technology and engineering expertise,” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer - Stellantis. “This validation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety builds consumer confidence in our trucks and in the Ram brand.”

The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Has a Key Pedestrian Safety Feature

The IIHS now requires vehicles to have an Automatic Emergency Braking system that is able to detect pedestrians to qualify for a Top Safety Pick designation. The 2021 Ram 1500 has a pedestrian detection feature as part of its Automatic Emergency Braking package. The Ram 1500 AEB system uses camera technology and radar sensors to help determine if a front-end collision is imminent. If the driver doesn’t respond to alerts, the system will automatically use the brakes to help avoid the crash. The Ram’s system has been expanded to work if it detects a pedestrian. The pedestrian detecting and crash avoidance technology is available as part of the Advanced Safety Group package. The package also includes Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Rear Cross Path detection, Blind-spot Monitoring with trailer coverage and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The 2021 Ram 1500 Excelled on the Crash Tests

In this years IIHS testing, the 2021 Ram 1500 achieved the highest possible ratings in six different types of crash tests. The tests simulate what happens during three types of front-end collisions, as well as the damage received in side-impact, rear-end and roll-over accidents. Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking technology was also graded “superior”.

I am not at all surprised that the 2021 Ram 1500 performed so well in all of the tests. I am surprised that the other automakers haven’t put the necessary safety equipment on their trucks to qualify for the safety awards. The 2021 Ram 1500 continues to set the bar and lead in a number of key categories.
