2020 Ram EcoDiesel Claims to be Towing Champ

Ram claims to be the new diesel-powered towing champ with its 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. FCA is pricing the pickup very aggressively and going after the towing title.

There is no doubt that Ram is aggressively pursuing all aspects of the pickup truck market. Ram is making inroads in the segment, often placing second in sales. Now Ram says it will be the towing leader with its new third-generation 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Ram says the 2020 Ram 1500 all-new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel will produce the highest half-ton diesel torque at 480 lb.-ft. Ram says the 1500 EcoDiesel’s towing capacity will be 12,560 pounds.

“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel offers the best torque and towing among all half-ton diesel trucks,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “Now with a 10-year track record, the Ram brand has emerged as a truck powertrain technology leader. Overall, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has outstanding pick-up truck capability and is truly in a class of its own.”

Ram is also making the EcoDiesel available across all trim levels, which is highly unusual for any automaker. Diesels are usually only available on the workhorse models. Even the popular Ram Rebel trim will be available as a diesel.

More Powerful But Less Expensive 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

The most affordable 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD at $38,585, that includes destination. That would also make it the most affordable diesel pickup of the Detroit Three.

According to Ram, the EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option. It is a $3000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque.
The older style 2019 Ram 1500 Classic will also offer an EcoDiesel, but it is the second-generation version. Pricing for the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel (Crew Cab 4x2) starts at $39,140, plus destination. That version does not have the same best-in-class torque or towing numbers.

2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Will Get Better Fuel Economy

Ram is promising that the all-new third generation turbocharged 3.0-Liter V-6 EcoDiesel will also have better fuel economy than previous versions. Actual numbers will be released closer to when the trucks go on sale in the fourth quarter.

An air suspension system should also boost fuel economy, while helping with off-road capability and cargo loading. The 2020 Ram 1500 will also have automatic load leveling.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is produced at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is being built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
