A Cybertruck can look fully guarded by Sentry Mode and still miss the incident its owner most wants recorded.

That gap surfaced after people smeared hot dog residue across a parked truck overnight. Sentry had flashed its lights at ordinary pedestrians only hours earlier, yet the archive contained no usable event showing the group around the vehicle.

Austin Fotheringham described the miss in the Tesla CyberTruck Facebook group:

“My truck got attacked by some hot dog bandits last night. While I am laughing, I am also surprised and concerned my Sentry Mode didn’t pick up a single thing. I know it works great most of the time. It literally went off and flashed the brights at random walkers a few hours before (clip attached). Any tips on sentry mode? I did swap out the SSD for a 1TB afterwards. For those that have one, does it work by deleting the old clips or do you have to consistently delete footage since it fills up so fast?”

The first question in the comments was the obvious one: Had he enabled “Exclude Home” and accidentally told the truck to stand down in his own driveway? Fotheringham said no.

“No, I keep sentry on everywhere for this very reason. If it was in a garage, that would be different, but my garage isn’t long enough based on where our garage stairs are, unfortunately. Usually it gets triggered multiple times every single day with people out walking and even my next door neighbor getting into his vehicle, but for some reason it missed while these kids were all over the truck.”

That answer removes one easy explanation. It does not identify the root cause.

The post does not include the Cybertruck’s software version, battery state, Camera-Based Detection setting, storage status, or camera condition. This is one owner’s clean miss, not evidence that every Cybertruck has the same problem.

Tesla Warns That Sentry Can Miss the Event It Was Meant to Catch

Tesla describes Sentry Mode as an intelligent security system that powers the cameras while the truck is locked and parked. When it detects a threat, it can pulse the headlights, sound the alarm, notify the app, and save video. The same manual also carries a blunt warning: Sentry uses “many factors”; all impacts may not be detected, and the alarm may not activate in every situation.

The most relevant setting here may be Camera-Based Detection. Tesla says that when it is enabled, Sentry uses the external cameras in addition to the vehicle’s sensors. When it is disabled, the truck saves a clip only after it detects a physical threat. Someone approaching slowly and pressing soft food against body panels may create little of the movement or impact the sensors are looking for. That is a plausible explanation, not a diagnosis of Fotheringham’s truck.

Low Power Mode, an unrecognized drive, a recording fault, or compromised camera visibility could also matter. Tesla says Sentry turns off in Low Power Mode, Dashcam must be enabled for Sentry to work, and the storage device must be properly formatted and recognized. Tesla also warns that dirt, condensation, rain, fog, glare, and low light can reduce camera performance. Fotheringham’s report does not tell us which, if any, of those conditions applied.

A 1TB SSD Solves Retention, Not Detection

Fotheringham’s storage question has a clearer answer. Tesla says a compatible 1TB drive can retain up to 24 hours of rolling footage before older material is overwritten. It also says the oldest SentryClips are deleted when storage becomes limited, making room for newer Sentry events.

Saved footage is the exception owners need to watch. Manually saved clips can accumulate until the drive is full, and Tesla advises owners to move or delete saved videos periodically. A larger SSD gives Fotheringham more time to find a clip before it disappears. It cannot make the threat classifier more sensitive, improve a blocked camera, or recover footage the truck never saved.

The useful distinction is simple. Ordinary Sentry event clips are managed by the vehicle as space tightens. Clips an owner deliberately saves can require cleanup. The 1TB upgrade is sensible if the drive meets Tesla’s write-speed and compatibility requirements and is formatted through the truck, but storage capacity addresses only half of the system.

A Five-Minute Test Is Worth More Than Blind Trust

Before leaving a Cybertruck outside overnight, I would run a controlled test in the same parking location and lighting where Sentry is expected to work:

  • Confirm that the Sentry icon is red, Dashcam is enabled, Camera-Based Detection is on, and the storage device appears in the viewer.
  • Clean the exterior camera lenses, then check the live feeds for glare, darkness, condensation, or an obstructed angle.
  • Have someone walk slowly around the truck, pause near each side, and make a harmless, obvious gesture toward a panel. Review the footage immediately.
  • Repeat the test after dark. If the truck misses it, save the exact time, battery level, software version, drive model and format, then include those details in a Tesla service request.

For a truck parked at home, a fixed property camera also fills a different role. It can record continuously from a wider angle without waiting for the vehicle to classify a person as a threat.

Torque News has covered the opposite outcome, including a Cybertruck owner whose Sentry footage captured vandalism and a Tesla Dashcam clip that documented a daylight license-plate theft. Torque News has also covered the energy cost of leaving Cybertruck Sentry active, with an owner reporting unusually high battery drain after an update. Together, those cases frame the bargain owners are making: Sentry can produce valuable evidence, and keeping it active consumes energy, yet the system still carries a detection limit Tesla states in its own manual.

Fotheringham’s hot-dog cleanup probably ended with soap rather than an insurance claim. The same blind spot during keying, a hit-and-run, or an attempted break-in would be much harder to shrug off. His story should not be inflated into a model-wide defect claim. It should convince owners to verify the security system they assume is watching.

A terabyte helps the truck keep more evidence after it decides to record. It does not help the truck make that decision.
