I Am Caught Between a Porsche 911 GTS and a Base Carrera, and Reddit Is Helping Me If The $30k Price Gap Is Worth It

Porsche's pricing has people on Reddit scratching their heads on which 992.2 Carrera variant is worth what Porsche is asking.

The Porsche 911 is one of the most consistent sports cars you can buy, not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of the variety its lineup offers. There is a 911 for most tastes, even if you limit yourself to the Carrera models. Recently, my curiosity was peaked regarding which 911 models people go for the most. The Carrera S is, typically, the most popular model, closely followed by the GTS and 4 GTS models in more recent years.

The 992.2 Carrera S just came out and with Porsche's allocation process, often, taking months, I decided to do a bit of research and see, which other models people are willing to go for when the Carrera S isn't readily available. I picked out some juicy bits from a Reddit discussion, focused a 992.2 purchase decision, and I discovered a few interesting aspects regarding the 911 buying process, you may be interested in.

At the time of starting the Reddit thread, the forum member was a prospective 911 buyer. I am attaching his post, along with some configurator links, to his potential choices.

“Hey everyone,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and could use some advice. I was planning to put a deposit down for a 911 GTS (992.2), but the recent price hike has me reconsidering. I'm now thinking about possibly ordering a Base Carrera instead. However, after configuring a Base Carrera, the price gap with the GTS is around $30k-$35k.

For context, this car will be my second car and I'll be driving it maybe 2-3 times a week. I currently drive a 2024 Cayenne and previously owned a GT Silver Cayman GTS and a black Macan. Here are the options I'm considering:

- Moderately Spec’d GTS - $178k

Price can be further reduced by selecting GT Silver or another color and removing the HD matrix design headlights

Configurator Link

- Highly Optioned Base Carrera - $149k

Configurator Link

- Moderately Optioned Base Carrera - $140k

Configurator Link

- Wait for Another Year

Possibly consider a Carrera T or Carrera S

Not sure about this option as a mid-optioned Carrera S will likely be priced around $155k-$160k, if not more

I'd love to hear your thoughts on which option you think is the best and why. Any input from fellow Porsche enthusiasts would be greatly appreciated!”

Porsche's 911 pricing is brilliant

Porsche 911 buyers struggle to decide betwee the different 992.2 Carrera variants, in a heated Reddit discussion

For me, one comment from a Reddit used perfectly summarizes the Porsche 911's pricing strategy:

“Porsche does a perfect job pricing its cars. They make it so easy to rationalize spending more...if you're going to spend $140k on a Base, why not spend $160k on an S, then why not spend $180k on a GTS...

Depending on timing and your budget, I would do either the moderately spec'd GTS, or the moderately optioned Base. I am not a fan of adding too many options to a Base since it quickly gets into S territory.”

If you, like me, have spent significant time playing around with the Porsche configurator, you will have noticed how comprehensive the options list is. It seems the base Carrera S with a few options could be the most value for money if you are still unsure about the 992.2 Carrera GTS's T-Hybrid powertrain.

Then again, the Carrera 4 GTS is the only 992.2 currently available with all-wheel drive, and that one starts at $172,700 - $52,600 more than the base 992.2 Carrera starting MSRP. Those prices are without shipping ($1,995).

If you are considering a Porsche 992.2 Carrera T, I recently decided to spec the perfect (for me) Porsche 911 Carrera T with must-have options, for way under $150,000. The 992.2 Carrera S starts at $146,400, and with a few options, you can still keep it around $160,000 or less. But let me know in the comment section below, which one would you choose?

I love it when Porsche gets misspelled, because my grandmother was born Clara Anna Prosche.

I got this notice from Google Alerts (I assume the misspelling was in the Megatext):
