The Porsche 911 is in its eighth generation, and the 992.2 update brought a few important firsts. The main thing is the company’s brilliant T-Hybrid powertrain, which shows you can have the best of both worlds with barely any sacrifices. The new hybrid setup is featured in roughly half of the 911’s current model range, and while data on the range-topping GT2 RS is still scarce, it is expected to feature a similar setup to the 911 Turbo S.

The GT2 was always a more vicious variant of the Turbo with more power, less weight, and rear-wheel drive. There is no reason not to expect that here, as when it comes to the 911, the brand likes to keep things as close to tradition as possible. The latest footage of the test prototype comes from the YouTube channel, Nürburg Automotive (see video below), where various prototypes can be seen testing on the German racetrack.

A few Porsche 911s were spotted testing.

A couple of test prototypes were spotted on the Nordschleife, but only one is actually the GT2 RS. The first test mule is partially camouflaged, but you can still make out some of the details. It bears resemblance to the 992.2 GT3 RS, but there are noticeable differences in the rear diffuser. The prototype wears an SSR Performance logo. This is a twin-turbo kit for the current 911 GT3 RS, which bumps power to 860 horsepower and 700 pound-feet. The downwards-facing exhaust tips are placeholders, and the rear wing seems slightly larger than on the factory model, albeit still featuring a similar, swan-neck design.  Manthey - a known Porsche partner - is also testing a GT3, likely for a new kit they are preparing.

The second prototype shows more.

The second prototype is less camouflaged and shows a different front end, never seen before on any 911 model, but also a smaller wing resembling more that on the GT3 RS. Perhaps a Weissach package? Or maybe Porsche is bringing back the GT2 and GT2 RS like in the 997 generation. The second test mule is pushed harder and can even be seen kicking the back end out, which suggests it is rear-wheel-drive-only. The side vent is also camouflaged, suggesting a different design than what we have seen on the GT3 RS and Turbo models.

Performance elevated to new levels.

We expect the same 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six T-Hybrid setup to power the GT2 RS, but with added power. How Porsche would add that power is unknown at this point. Bigger turbochargers, upgraded cooling, and new exhaust setups are some of the more likely options, as this is what we have seen on older iterations of the range-topping 911. The 992.2 Turbo S (there is no regular Turbo anymore) packs 711 horsepower and 590 pound-feet from that setup, while the GT2 RS is expected to boost those figures to 800-850 horsepower.

If all that goes to the rear wheels, it will be the closest thing we get to a modern-day 911 widowmaker, but with more manageable power. The transmission will continue to be a seven-speed PDK without an option for a true manual transmission. You’ll have to go for the GT3 or Sport Classic if you want a range-topping manual 992.

The GT2 RS is expected to feature more downforce than any other road-going 911, as well as active aero. The new 911 GT2 is expected to feature Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard, as well as sophisticated rear-wheel steering. The new track-focused 911 is expected to debut around early 2027, and have a price tag of over $450,000. Are we looking at a potential new lap record on the Nordschleife? Porsche’s 911 has traditionally been among the fastest cars to lap the German racetrack, and the 992.2 GT2 RS might just have what it takes to snatch the current lap record from the Ford GT Mk IV (6:15.977).
