Sandy Munro On Tesla Humanoid Robot

Sandy Munro, also known as the "Teardown Titan" due to his tearing down many different vehicles and revealing the working intricacies of the vehicle. He is known for comparing Tesla vehicles to other vehicles and showing just how far Tesla is ahead of the competition. Recently, he spoke about the Tesla humanoid robot.

The Tesla humanoid robot was recently seen in a CGI skit that Elon Musk said could become a reality for testing in 2024.

In this latest conversation with a few others on X, Sandy said that he believes Tesla will have working bots on the line in 2024 and that the Tesla humanoid robot will be able to do anything on the assembly line that a man can do.

The Tesla Bot was recently seen with some improvements, such as a 30% walking speed increase and doing squats - which is a big improvement from the first bot reveal that had to use a cable in order to even walk.

Sandy Munro is highly sought after for his opinions on engineering due to his extensive experience working with Ford and doing consulting for other auto companies. I think what he is saying here is worth paying attention to.

According to Morgan Stanley:

Implications of Tesla Bot Working the Production Line

I think there are some big implications if the Tesla bot starts working on the assembly line. First off, I don't think it will do the entire job of Tesla workers on the assembly line right away, but it will start with simple jobs, such as moving objects from point A to point B.

Second, as time goes on, the Tesla humanoid robot will start to do more complex tasks, such as putting together different parts of a car and doing painting. This won't be the end of what it can do, though.

It will eventually start to do the dangerous work, such as working near the casting machines and giga presses. As long as it is trained properly with the right data, it will be able to take over this dangerous job. Those that used to do this will simply overseer what is going on and verify that everything is working properly.

It won't stop here, though...

The Tesla bot will eventually work on assembly lines to create more Tesla bots. That's right - the Tesla Bot will build more copies of itself. This will be slow at first, however, as more and more bots are assembled, those bots will assemble more bots, creating an exponential curve of more Tesla bots.

This will be the way Tesla gets to millions to hundreds of millions to billions of humanoid robots - by having the humanoid robots build copies of themselves.

In theory, Tesla's giga factories could largely be run by Tesla bots and employees could be put to work on more creative tasks and overseeing the bots to make sure everything is in working order.

Tesla workers will also work on data labeling and video training, which will require an enormous amount of effort, and I can see Tesla employees shifting to that role as well over time.

Remember that movie I, Robot where the robots start making more robots but they are controlled by a malevolent AI. The robots themselves are relatively dumb so need external control for plot reasons. Now in the movie the AI for plot reasons runs on specialized hardware in one data center and is easy for the protagonists to destroy.

Now imagine a different ending where all the bots are smart and powered by on-board intelligence (not necessarily just transformers - maybe a combination of various techniques including liquid neural nets, spiking nets, transformers, etc). Also imagine that any large non-embodied AIs will run many many copies of themselves in many different data centers around the world. Now imagine that the design of the robots is done by fully autonomous AIs, not humans, as they are just better and faster than we are.

Best hope the robots don't want to fight because if they do we will be in trouble.
